Arctic Drive Field Notes (B-Side)
This morning someone asked us, unprompted, if we'd seen the Tuunbaq. (For context, we've just driven into the Arctic.)
I unthinkingly replied something to the effect of, "Yeah, and the trauma bonding led to some unexpected moments. We're husbands now." (I don't know, man, I couldn't stop myself. It was the first thing I thought of saying.)
But THEN they asked which one of us is the Fitzjames and which one of us is the Crozier in this relationship
and
I am beside myself
In honor of what is apparently called Sail Out Day, here’s some expedition-related pictures I took at the Greenwich Maritime Museum last week (sorry about the glare on most of the pics— the lighting made it unavoidable)….
Boat badges of Erebus and Terror:
Items belonging to Sir John Franklin, along with examples of scientific tools used on the expedition:
McDonald’s medical chest (yes, that’s The Portrait of JCR in the background):
The Mystery Meat:
A balloon message and pin sent out during one of the rescue effort missions (I would’ve cried if they had one of the fox collars, but alas):
And finally: They Forged The Last Link With Their Lives, by William Thomas Smith, painted 1895. I stood in front of this for a while.
Ok I’ve been reading “May We Be Spared to Meet on Earth” and there’s an almost throwaway line about early rubber boats and someone has designed one that is a cloak and also a boat?!
So I can only imagine James Fitzjames bragging about his ✨cloak flotation device✨ only to be swept off the deck by a gust of wind landing perfectly safely on the Navy Issue Lilo now tied around his neck!
@laissezferre thank you for this post
It inspired me to paint James Clark Ross in his later years. It feels ironic how everyone remembers the heroic polar explorer, yet forget the man broken by unimaginable tragedy.
I tried inking as it felt like a good medium to convey the chaos and grief.
PS: There is some Easter egg hidden in the dark and messy room
Edit: I realised I posted this on his birthday and I feel horrible.
I tried a quick painting of historical Francis Crozier and James Fitzjames.
I painted Crozier enjoying his botanical hobby in Tasmania.
Fitzjames is probably re-considering his life choices in the Arctic.
