It’s hard to be a writer and a poet when you’re aspiring to be a doctor. It’s particularly hard for me. For someone who has used pain, loss, and brokenness as the source of her writing power after all this time. For someone who is determined to dedicate her life to healing people, to mend whatever is broken, and to focus on something that is good. Pain and sorrow has been the fuel of my pen, and it has taken my writing to such a long way. It has lead me to a deadly, risky, free, yet beautiful path. Because there is always an alluring beauty in pain and sorrow. I have met a lot of amazing people along the way — including the person who I really am. I’m so glad I found her in between my words and rhymes. But now I’m expected to follow a completely different path. They have all been telling me to use a new sort of ink so that my writings would take a new turn. And that exactly what I’m about to do. We all need to embrace new things. It’s all so cliché but yes, the pages must turn and new chapters are about to be written. I’m not saying that I’m now a completely brand new and better person. I’m still my old self that is broken in some ways. We all are. But I can never be a good doctor and heal people if I cannot even heal myself. It’s time to pick myself up and try. So here’s to a brand new ink! Here’s to better writings!

To new/discouraged writers:

You don’t have to have 100+ notes on everything you write to have quality writing. Keep writing.

You don’t need to have reviews praising the ground you walk on—you don’t even need readers at all. Keep writing.

You don’t need to come up with the most unheard-of plot lines and most accepted head canons to have quality writing. Keep writing.

And most importantly, you don’t have to have quality writing right now and that’s okay. Keep writing.

We all start somewhere. It takes a lot of courage to post something for complete strangers to read, but keep writing. Keep posting. Keep asking for feedback. Look for people to help you grow. And many years later, you might roll your eyes and feel secondhand embarrassment over your past self’s word choices and character development. But I really hope that when that happens, you then go and pick up a pen or open up a blank document and you keep writing, knowing how far you’ve come and how far you can go.

Tips for Writing

Sometimes writing can more frustrating than enjoyable. What’s important when penning a story to share with the rest of the world (or to keep for your own pleasure) is to keep it fun. Over the last two years, I’ve created my own little routines and habits when I sit and write. Every person has their own method and one won’t always work for all, so I thought I’d share my own tips when the plot bunnies insist on hopping and just won’t get out of your head:

Be calm: Writing can be a struggle when you’re sad or angry. Venting your feelings can be a HUGE relief when you’re upset, but don’t try to write for a story until you have a clear conscience. It makes the process less stressful.

Find a comfortable space: Depending on the story I’m writing for, I need either silence or noise, light or shutting the blinds a little. I play music when I start a new chapter for Black Sun and turn off the tv, radio, any source of noise when I write for Hiding In Plain Sight. The atmosphere can really influence the muse in your head and alter the way the words come out.

Don’t exhaust yourself: Writing until your muse is completely busted isn’t always the best idea because you don’t know how long it’ll take to get it back. It might be a few days, weeks, even months depending on what life throws at you. Some inspirations just disappear before you get a chance to write it out and that’s perfectly normal. Don’t stress. When you write, always leave a little bit of juice for the next time, instead of spending it all and waiting even longer to get it back. It really fights against writer’s block.

Always keep a notebook and pencil handy: Sometimes plot devices/twists or dialogue bits will come to me at the most random times. Like when I’m brushing my teeth, eating dinner, cleaning my room, doing laundry, ect and a lot of times I didn’t write them down because I figured I’d remember them later. But I didn’t… bad mistake. Now I always have paper and pencil in my room, living room and take it to the kitchen with me in case an idea/line pops up. Jotting them down whenever they come really helps speed along the process of finishing a chapter and helps with flow/structure.

Don’t over think it: When I published my second story it was tricky for me to switch between my OC’s different perspectives. However, now that I’m more experienced with creating them and developing varied ways of narration for each of them, jumping from the “Alessandra voice” to the “Charlotte voice” is fairly simple. It all comes down to how well you know the character and the comfort she has inside of your own head (I know, it sounds crazy). Don’t freak out about making the chapter perfect. Have fun with it. Enjoy what you write and write what you love, whether it be humor or drama. If it’s your first time penning a story, try to write more from your own thoughts rather than a fictional character. It helps getting emotions down on paper without seeming forced and paves the way for altering the narration into your own original character.

These "chap books" are just Tumblr blogs on a different medium. Viperslang is a wanna be and that raise the curve dude is just someone who plays the game of being an "editor". lol.

You clearly do not think much of your own opinion, or you would have come without the sunglasses. Those same sunglasses also make your opinion so utterly irrelevant.

For all I know (or care), you are the gum stuck to the bottom of my boot talking through its hindquarters. The latter’s opinions hold similar levels of interest as far as I’m concerned.

I also wholeheartedly recommend reading one of those book things you refer to instead of playing games on Tumblr, you might realise there is a distinct difference between the two.

PS. I doubt you were actually lolling, but if you were, that also does not exactly add weight to your words. If you see what I mean.

Either you prefer your poetry on a piecemeal basis or you’re just showing your ass, anon. Chapbooks remain today one of the best ways to showcase a small selection of a poet’s best work. They’re not an invention of the tumblr glitterati to laugh at lowly mortals like yourself, and they’re most certainly not written in blog form, though the latter would make an interesting artistic statement.

Tumblr is not a traditional platform for a poet. If I query a publishing house with my only credentials being the number of followers I have on tumblr, I’m going to be laughed at in the best case. Writing a chapbook is a logical first step for a budding poet to branch away from their blog — their comfort zone and, in most cases, their diary — and start reaching towards the outmoded but respectable standards of a serious poet.

Tumblr is not a joke. Andrea Gibson posts here. Ocean Vuong posts here. I could go on, but why? That Scherezade feels comfortable enough — a line surely growing ever thinner, owing to moments such as these — to post work here is not a reflection of her talent. Her skill has earned her the respect of her fellow poets. Furthermore, she selflessly devotes time to uplifting burgeoning talents and placing them in the same cage as veterans of the page. She is far from a pretender.

If you don’t like someone’s work, that’s your prerogative, but be respectful. If you don’t want to read a chapbook, don’t read it. If you didn’t like a chapbook you read, provide constructive feedback. We’re here to help each other grow.

With regards to your statement about me, you’re probably right. I play at a lot of things — poet, writer, editor being only a few — but at least I’m in the game. I do the best I can with what I’m given. If you expect more, give me feedback or give me time while I gather it from kinder, more respectful souls than you.

All works must begin somewhere. At one time each and every publishing house was a new company completely untested and therefore mocked. At one time The New Yorker was a new magazine on the scene in New York and subject to the derision given all literary embryos.

Effort in all forms, whether through an establishment or through a fledgling, is to be respected for the simple reason that movement has occurred. The first risk is always to do something. The last risk is to anonymously mock. The danger in making public insults is that one reveals their own mindset and self assessment. In effect, what one insults you with is what truly troubles them about themselves.

Not a single artist alive will ever quit creating because someone anonymously throws insults. It is a doubly pathetic effort. Not only does it not work, but it creates within the shade thrower a great cowardice that manifests itself in lackluster living until what they say about others and how they live are nearly indistinguishable. You should have been busy writing and making your own Anon, rather than waiting for others to produce. You show your laziness by having time to criticize.

Being the 5000 year old alchemist that I have always been, I love how everyone is clubbing this anon with logic and passion.

Pretty sure we don’t gather for acceptance, but we gather because we don’t belong anywhere else. So we network with other writers. We collaborate. Not all of us are laureates or high profiling writers. But it takes a huge amount of bravery to share art globally.

Tumblr is a good resource. You don’t have to like the people or follow what you hate. This is where post-modernism really plays in: this is the filtration of what we want to see what happens global and hope that may be reciprocated.

Not the first time an anon has failed to really criticize and be precise in poison letters, though maybe some like to see the world burn.

I for one like to see the world learn.

So, readers, you’re welcome—for all the time and effort we put into our Ars and actually having balls to break tradition & share our work.

The discussion level here is fucking fantastic, and I don’t have much to add, but I’ve been following this conversation since the post first went up yesterday, and it frustrates me that I hearted it then and although I’d like to hit the heart on every one of these responses, I am unable to do so.

Will anything said here make a difference to this Anon? I doubt it. But it amuses me to no end that people like Anon exist, people who are so fucking petty they’d rather snipe at people who are actually doing the work than bother with their own. And I feel safe making that assumption in this case, because if Anon were hard at work writing, editing, revising, and submitting work, Anon would not have time to talk smack about the people who are. You don’t make anyone else’s accomplishments any smaller by insulting them, Anon—you can only do that by surpassing them.

I do have some advice for Anon, despite the fact I don’t see it making any difference: stop being so scared.

whispers just a tip for writers (and also actors) out there: imagine that all defining qualities of a character exist on a scale of 1-10. don’t let your character hit their “ten” - their peak of doing/feeling something - until you’re about to get rid of them. basically, don’t let us see all a character has to give until we’re about to say goodbye to them. this is a really common error when a writer is tryna make a weakly written character look badass, but it’s boring when it’s like “nah he’s gonna make a speech/do a training montage/eat spinach and then kick butt i’ve seen this before”. this is why villains are better off not being revealed until the end: just from their Sheer Evilness, they hover close to a 10 as a character, but once we know what they’re truly capable of - they’re not scary any more. keep ur precious babies at like an 8, max, and then when you pull out the big guns for the climax, it will feel like a climax :)

A Perfunctory Guide to Writers Looking for Publishers

I’m asked at least once a week how to get published. Once upon a time, this was a very straightforward answer:

1. Write a novel.

2. Write a query letter.

3. Send the query letter to agents or to editors.

4. Rinse and repeat until said agents and editors ask to see the rest.

5. Rinse and repeat until they see the rest and ask to buy it.

5. In the case of multiple offers, speak to all parties on the phone and see which one makes you feel like the prettiest pony.

Here were things you did not do:

1. Pay to be published.

2. Pay your agent anything besides 15% of the sale price of your book and your royalties.

3. Pay for any of the costs associated with being published such as cover design, editing, printing, hiring of performing bears, etc.

4. Do anything other than write and be paid for writing.

But now there are many ways to be published. Self-publishing and small publishers no longer have the same stigma attached to them. It is no longer the most obvious thing to say: to get published, write a query letter and submit it to an agency or a publishing house, DONE.

Instead, you must ask yourself: what is my goal in publishing?

If your goal is to write a book that you hope will appear on the shelves of Barnes & Noble, CostCo, and supermarkets everywhere, you still need to follow the first set of steps. A traditional publisher is still your only way to get into all of those places. And if you really do have your eye on stands in supermarkets and Sam’s Club and airports, you not only need a traditional publisher, but you need a large traditional publisher of the sort that generally exists in New York and is called something like Little, Brown, or Scholastic, or Random House. You will also need an agent.

You will need, as I said before, to do all of the steps I first listed.

If your goal is to write a book that you’d like to see on shelves but are fine with those shelves being the ones in specialty stores or libraries or schools, a smaller traditional publisher might be a good option for you. This is especially true if you’ve written a less commercial book. (here is a good way to judge if something is commercial: can you imagine your mother, your hair dresser, your veterinarian, and your brother in law all reading it? if so, it is super commercial. Commercial =/= good. It merely means many people will pick it up).

These smaller houses will carry the burden of editing and printing and marketing for you, but they won’t always have the clout to get your book into major stores. They are, however, often less competitive than the larger New York houses, and they will often give you more personal attention and promote your book for longer. You don’t always need an agent to submit to them either, though I recommend an agent if you’re pursuing a full-time career in writing.

But if your goal is only to be read, or to if you have a keen marketing mind and want to represent yourself, self-publishing is an emerging option. You’ll have all of the control, and there will be no rejection letters in your future. But you’ll also carry the entire burden of cover design, editing, printing, formatting for digital distribution and, most importantly, marketing and publicity. I was a self-representing artist, and success is possible, but it will look different than success at a traditional larger house, and it will ask different things from you. You will not, at this point, ever walk into a Sam’s Club and see a self-published title sitting on the table out front. It is very possible to be a writer without Sam’s Club. But it’s important to keep that in mind if a big commercial career is what you long for — the book on that table bears the logo of a large traditional publishing house.

A note: There are several companies that offer to help you with self/ digital-only publishing at the moment, but I’m not convinced of their usefulness at this point. I think it’s a little too soon to see how they’re anything but a middle man at this stage. My feelings are if you’re going to dive into the digital world, you should be doing it because you want the freedom and control in your own hands.

What it comes down to is that you need to be honest with what you need out of your publishing experience. Unhappiness comes from wrong-headed expectations and targeting the wrong house. If you long to see your book at O’Hare airport, you’re going to have a miserable experience self-publishing. If you want to publish a serial story in ten parts over two years, you’re going to have a hard time pitching it to a traditional house. Don’t expect a small house to suddenly change its stripes and drop a quarter million marketing budget on your novel.

DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Make a list of books and careers that you admire and would like to model, and then work backward to find out how those authors ended up where they were. And if something sounds too good to be true, it is. Consider suspect any option that seems like it doesn’t require rejection and work and practice and polish and scrabbling of your hands and teeth. This is the best job in the world, which means there are a lot of people who are fighting for it. If you really want it, you’ll fight alongside with them.

It’s very worth it.

Dear Maggie,

I read this a couple of months ago—after the small publisher I had signed my first book with (unagented) went bankrupt right before my book came out. I was really sad and I didn’t know what to do with myself when this crossed my dash.

This post gave me the strength and gumption to do a bunch of research and learn more about traditional publishing. I felt really happy and productive and if that feeling went away, I would re read this post-that I had saved in my drafts- and thought to myself “I’ll be a pretty pony one day if I work hard enough. pretty ponyness is in the eye of the beholder." and then work even harder.

Now I’m half way over the hump with my very own agent who I like so so so much and I’m so happy. I never thought I’d get this far at all.

And I just wanted to say thank you.

This post, and the time you took to write it, both mean so much to me.

Advice: Writer Responsibility

Anonymous asked: Hi ! Where do you think the writer’s responsibility starts or end ? I feel like evything I’m writing could have consequences (good or bad) on the readers and I definitely don’t want them for example to kill someone or feel really low or or else just because of what I’ve written…

My view on this subject is complicated. I don’t think it’s the writer’s responsibility to protect the reader or to serve as their moral compass. Storytelling is about exploring the human condition, and sometimes that means going to the dark places—the really dark places—and people who can’t handle that should use better judgment when selecting reading material. On the other hand, I think we do owe it to our readers to be respectful with difficult subject matter. Considering how your reader might feel about what you’re writing—especially if it hits close to home for them—is a very good idea. Make sure that you’ve done your research and are portraying your subject matter accurately, and that you’re not perpetuating prejudice, stereotypes, or other harmful mindsets. That doesn’t mean you can’t write about them, just make sure your authorial voice is not condoning these mentalities. If you demonstrate them, you should also show why they are bad and explore the consequences. Most important of all, I think, is to make sure you have a good reason for exploring difficult subject matter in the first place. Don’t just write about a killer for the sake of writing a killer. Don’t put your character through something terrible for the sake of putting them through something terrible. Everything you do in a novel should have a specific purpose. Think about the message you’re trying to send about this subject. What are you trying to say about humanity? Give your reader a message, hopeful or hopeless, or something thought-provoking to walk away with. That, in my mind, is the most that we can and should do as writers in terms of responsibility to our audience.

She Became a Writer

As a young woman, she wrote about death and illness and heartbreak, and other things she knew nothing about. She wanted desperately to write something inspiring, so she replicated shallow stories that made her cry during movies and television programs. But her empty words only groped pathetically at the heartstrings, devoid of any real substance. They lacked heart; they lacked truth. She held no intimacy with them.

She would not really become a writer until many years later, when all those subjects she’d only been meagerly acquainted with would become overbearing intruders. She’d had nothing to write about before. Not until after the birth of her child, the death of her best friend, the divorce from her first love. No real happiness. No real pain. No stories worth sharing.

She became a writer when she wept at the words of her son who, at the age of two, asked with pudgy hands outstretched toward a grey sky, “Why does God not show us His face?” For hours she wept. She wept and she wrote page upon page about the grey sky, and the pudgy hands, and a faceless god. And when she put down her pen to rub the throbbing cramp in her palm she thought: this is intimacy; this is true beauty.

She became a writer when her husband left and her son was old enough to choose sides but still too young to understand why there were sides to choose. She thought she’d write about the affair. She thought she’d fill entire journals of exact dialogue, copying down each painful word that had sprung from her husband’s lips and burrowed within her like splinters: "You and I haven’t been in love for a long time, Sarah" ; "You did this. I didn’t want it to be this way" ; "Yes, I love her." She took long baths every day, as if soaking in warm water might dislodge them. But when she finally put pen to paper, she wrote none of these things. Instead she wrote about the first time he’d made her breakfast—the burnt eggs, the butter-less toast. She wrote about the way he tied his tie the morning after the last night they’d ever slept together. She wrote about her favorite of his three different smiles, and how she wondered if now it was reserved for this new woman. She wrote apologies to her husband in long letters she’d never send; eventually she began writing apologies to herself: I’m sorry I let you love this man. I’m sorry I let you believe he was better than you. I’m sorry, Sarah. I’m so sorry.

She became a writer when she laid beside her best friend in a hospital bed, holding her ashy, whitened hand as the machines jolted her body in violent, rhythmic thrusts. This time, she wrote entire chapters about the way Josephine used to glow in the summer sun while her own skin would burn beet-red. She wrote about the countless nights they spent talking about boys who never knew they existed; the summer they spent on her uncle’s ranch in Tucson, and how they’d gotten in trouble for sneaking out to go skinny-dipping in a motel pool. She wrote entire collections of poems about the twinkle in Josephine’s eye when spoke about space—about stars and black holes and galaxies. She wrote new endings for her friend’s life—endings in which Josephine grew old and died warm in her bed, surrounded by children and grandchildren. Perhaps even great-grandchildren.

She became a writer in life’s most intimate moments; deep within each of its seemingly insignificant details. Within these particles, she found the workings of joy, pain, and loss. She found inspiration. She found a voice. She became a writer not once, but a million times over.

Tips For Writing

Tips From Random Writers

Research ! Do your research on the theme of the story or the characters flaws etc. EG, mental illness? > Make sure you google and find out as much as you can before writing a Character with it. Thug theme? > Again google and look into the terms, lifestyle etc

Visuals ! Add in as many as possible, gives the readers a more realistic feel to the story. eg : outfits, houses, minor characters.

Be descriptive ! With emotions, the characters thoughts, surroundings, scenes etc. Again makes the story so much more realistic and readers will feel like they are literally there. Also helps readers connect to the person.

Lengthy chapters ! Dont be stingy. Making your readers wait a month or so only to give them half assed chapters, is stupid. If youre going to start a story, at least do it to the best of your ability

Grammar and spelling ! No ones perfect, shit I know Im not but at least proofread and try to minimise as many mistakes as possible.

BE NICE ! God damn it, I cant tell you how many ff’s Ive unfollowed and stopped reading cause the writer is rude as phuck. Your readers are here for your story not your rude ass attitude, keep that off your blog.

Be consistent/ active ! Even if you aren’t updating every week, still interact with your readers and even keep them constantly updated on when the upcoming chapter is coming. (you will find that you get less ‘When are you updating?’, messages)

Promo ! Hit up a few ff promo blogs, submit your story and they will help get your story out there! A few recommendations are fanficstopshop101 thefanficnetworkthefictionreview thefanfichelp findfanficshere

Plot Twists / Drama ! I cant stress this enough, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. Nothing new or exciting when the only plot drama you can come up with is cheating, gets the side chick pregnant etc etc etc. Be creative, use your imagination and come up with something that no one will expect !

Write for yourself ! This is YOUR story, dont give into the cliche of being predictable just because readers what it to play out a certain way. Stories come out best when you are purely writing for yourself, the way YOU see it, the way YOU want it.

Dont doubt yourself ! Known fact is that as a writer, you are your biggest critic. Try not to let that overshadow your creative mind and your desire to write. We all start somewhere, we progress and get better but in saying that dont bring yourself down. And dont ever compare your story to someone elses! Biggest no no ever !

1. USE ADJECTIVES! I know I’m barely doing that because I’m getting lazy since this fanfic is coming to end but this isn’t about me. Lol. Adjectives give a more detailed picture.

Ex: I walked into the room to find him wearing a jacket and jeans sitting on the couch. (Lol idk)

Better sentence: I walked into the dim crimson coated living room to find him wearing his black leather jacket and ripped faded blue jeans sitting on the brown couch.

See? Much better! 😄

2. USE DETAIL! Try to use as much detail as possible. Makes your story better and chapters. People fail to read stories due to lack of detail and you don’t want that. When describing a scene include emotions, comparisons, etc.

Ex. He led me down the narrow dim halllway. We reached room 124 and opened it slowly approaching him. He looked at me and took my hand.

Pretty bad, right?

Better one: He led me down this narrow, dim hallway. I don’t know if it’s my anxiety or what, but it seemed like those creepy hallways in those horror films. My heart was racing and finally we reached a wooden door with a small window and labeled 114. I placed my hand on the cold metal door handle and turned it. The door opened and I stepped inside closing the door. I slowly approached the white bed that contained Cayden. He laid his eyes on me causing my heart tumble. He took my hand into his and softly stroked it.

See? Saying the same thing but painting a better picture. (If you read my fanfic, scarletlove-ff, that’s a piece of it. )

3. AVOID SAID! I avoid using said at all times. If you keep saying “he said, she said, I said, they said, pussy said, dick said” readers are going to get bored. You need to have variety. Instead of said, use:

·Stated

·Indicated

·Reprimanded

· Commented

Etc. Etc. Etc. Just look up synonyms for said. Same goes for adjectives.

·Instead of red, use crimson, cherry.

·Instead of black, use ebony, charcoal.

·Instead of mad, use pissed, angry, furious, etc.

And so on.

4. BE CREATIVE! BE ORIGINAL! Originality is key when writing! If you write a story that EVERYONE does, no one will read it because readers crave originality. All my fanfics are fanfics I’ve thought of and produced myself. If your writing to be hot, you gotta be original as possible. Don’t have the typical “girl gets hurts in the past, meets dude and has her walls up then finally puts her walls down and they fuck.” Like no ✋. Too many people doing that. It’s difficult, i know but it’s really not. Think of the songs you listen to, songs with meaning. Those songs will usually help you get ideas.

Don’t be nervous its just fiction nobody iabgoing to come after you for writing lol but first I would say come up with a solid plot line for your story first. Make sure it’s original copying is not cute or respected. Write because you want to write don’t let other people pressure you into doing anything whether it be FC’s character names character descriptions the plot line whatever just do what you want to do. Take your time when writing the chapters dontjust put something that you don’t completely believe in just because you want to rush and put a chapter up….don’t drag the story don’t over detail it but don’t be lazy either. That’s all I got for you right now babe hope it helped ☺

Meaning, explain things clearly in your writing. Also, when I write my chapters, I try to make sure it is interesting to me, before I post it for my readers.
