Bhakti (Devotion) is the same as meditation and contemplation. It is a mystical exercise and experience. Bhakti connects the yogi to the Divine. Through Bhakti the yogi remembers God (Brahman) and is mindful of their true Self (Atman). Bhakti is both a cause leading up to enlightenment and also an experience of enlightenment and liberation (Moksha). In these dark times of the Kali Yuga (dark ages) Bhakti is the relatively easiest spiritual practice.

Bhakti is easy to practice! Firstly the Bhakti-yogi should take refuge in God, recognising God as Lord and depending on God for everything. Secondly the Bhakti-yogi dedicates himself to God offering everything he or she does to God. One important Bhakti practice is chanting Mantras, such as “Om Namah Shivaya”. Other practices are: singing devotional songs; giving their food to God before eating it; making offerings of water and flowers to images of the divine or sacred places; visiting temples and sacred places; giving to charity and being generous and helpful to other people - Always remember the golden rule: what we do to others we do to ourselves and God!
