EVERYONE WAKE UP
NEW NOMURA's ART WAS DROPPED
He made me feel… like I had a heart.
@dxrk-storm
♡ ――― Deep Jungle.
Hearts, Roxas hates this world.
Lush trees and thick foliage meant steamy, suffocating temperatures as he traverses the thick overgrowth on the jungle floor. He’s starting to hate this damn Organization cloak right about now too as the sun dapples through the trees and little, tiny bugs creep into the leather and bite him where he can’t swat them away. Even so, Roxas presses on, breathing hard under the pressing heat.
It doesn’t take long to find the Keyhole.
Sora’s memories provide a perfect, clear map to where he needs to go. Whereas Sora saved these worlds so long ago, Roxas is merely retracing his steps to destroy them.
Funny, Roxas doesn’t think he’s breaking anything.
To Roxas, when he overlooks the pieces of the tale about the Keyblades, it just seems so wrong. Keyblades that have the power to rewrite fate, Keyblades that can shatter hearts? Why were these weapons even created? Why give so much power to mere children and hope that destiny guides them to the light and they don’t stray into the dark instead...?
It’s like this weapon is a ticking time bomb just waiting to explode.
Then there’s the matter of the worlds preferring to be shrouded in shadow, disconnected from all the others. And this always struck Roxas as odd... wouldn’t the universe benefit from united worlds, a shared destiny they could all write together? But all Sora was told to do was lock the Keyholes and keep them apart, vowing to protect the worlds’ order.
Roxas has this gut feeling that everything he and his friends have done up until now wasn’t right.
It’s a lot to bet on just a gut feeling though.
Despite his reserves he still has Oblivion in hand, pointed at the green wall in the cozy hollow he resides inside now known as the nesting grounds to the gorilla inhabiting this world. A Keyhole glitters into sight, responding to the Keyblade poised so close to it.
Roxas unlocks it and the world’s fate is sealed with a click.
But when he turns away from the Keyhole, Roxas sees himself staring back with a puzzled, bemused expression--the same spikey blonde hair, the same wide eyes, it’s like looking in a mirror. Roxas steps back in surprise, blinking hard.
The only difference are the amber eyes that gleam Roxas’ way.
“Ventus...?” Roxas asks breathlessly, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
Roxas didn’t know much about Ventus personally, though Sora’s memories provided a vague description for him. There was only one other person that looked like Roxas down to their toes and that was Ventus and because of their eerie similarities Roxas often avoided him, so unnerved by seeing another him around that wasn’t Sora it was simply easier to act like he didn’t exist.
Until, seemingly, Ventus found him instead and was ready to confront Roxas on a newly dying world.
“What are you doing here?” Roxas asks sharply.
But even as they talk a ripple sets off from the Keyhole, shaking the world as a whole, the ground rumbling beneath their feet. And shadowy pools begin to ooze up around them, a warning that the Heartless are fast approaching...

♡ ――― Roxas is at the Market Place of Radiant Garden, the hood of his Organization cloak pulled over his head so that no one mistakes him for Sora. And while Roxas is willing to use this chilling appearance to his advantage, parading around like the shining hero they only want to see (because a lot of people owe Sora favors, but not so much his Nobody hardly any of them knew even existed). Yet right now, he’s laying low and looking for a way off this world. If he drew down his hood, someone would come rushing up to him, all relieved and bubbling tears, because they think Roxas is the lost hero somewhere among the stars.
And that would blow his cover completely--
So, instead, he hides.
By now, the Restoration Committee is likely aware Leon is knocked out in the Grand Hall and someone has unlocked the Keyhole to this world. Ever since Roxas turned that particular lock, this world has been rumbling, stray earthquakes shaking beneath his boots and rattling the little stores and their windows. Roxas keeps telling himself he had to do this, but as billowing clouds build over the horizon, lashing with streaks of bizarre, colorful lightning, he wonders if he did the right thing after all.
He’s marching to his gummiship parked in a secluded place right outside of town, but as he approaches the gates of Radiant Garden he sees, with a sudden lurch, guards posted there, eyes keen and searching the crowd.
“Shit,” Roxas hisses, diving into a reclusive alley next to him and pressing against the brick wall. “They already know what I’ve done...”
He curses his luck--if he could use the Corridors of Darkness like before when he was a Nobody, he could whisk off this world without a problem. But ever since cultivating a heart through his connection with Sora and his friends, he lost those dark powers only Nobodies could have. He can no longer summon rippling portals of darkness and even if he could he could never survive the dark roads now, not without them ravaging this useless new heart he has.
Roxas considers his options: flight or fight--
Oblivion flashes to his gloved hand.
But just as he’s about to storm the guards, he jolts to a halt within the alley as a dark portal opens and a figure in the Organization cloak steps out of it...
Roxas spies a sliver of silver hair peeking out of the side of their drawn hood...
His rational mind shuts off, a clean break, and assumptions launch to the forefront of his conscious--and in a spasm of panic, in a sudden seething rage that spurts like a volcano in his new heart, all he can think is: Xemnas?!
Of course, if he had paused to consider the figure, he would note that they were decidedly feminine, but that’s how blind he becomes when this anger colors his vision a grueling red and the memories of everything he lost is right on the surface--he doesn’t think or pause to consider all the people looking for him now--
No, he’s running out of that alley, Oblivion tight in his grip, and he only stops when he has the Keyblade’s tip poised behind the nameless figure with the Organization cloak. He’s breathing hard, Oblivion shivering in his shaking grasp.
“Xemnas!!” Roxas cries. “What are you doing here?! You’re supposed to be dead!”

@dxrk-storm says: 14, 15, 16!
( canon questionnaire )
14. Are there some characters from the franchise you can’t stand?
Honestly? I can’t think of any character that I hate from this franchise, which is actually surprising, because I was sure there was someone that would annoy me. And yet, when I think about it, all I get is a bunch of characters I mildly dislike, often because their characterization is so flat, they don’t react normally to traumatic circumstances, their lines are dull...
For example, in KH3, I was pretty bored of Sora’s character. I love Sora up to the point of KH3 and now I’m just impatient for his character to go somewhere. And by that, I think Sora needs room to breathe and get over his one-dimensional scope of “happiness and friendship is awesome”. I love happy and whimsical characters (shockingly), but guys... when a character never changes it starts to get a little unbelievable, especially considering everything Sora has been through.
However, I think KH4 is going to be that breath of fresh air Sora (and other) characters need.
15. What are your thoughts on the canon ships for the character, if any?
Idk if Roxas has any canon ships? I used to think Nomura was trying to imply Roxas and Namine were a thing, but then Riku and Namine at the ending of KH3 seem to be a canon couple by this point? Or at least, Riku and Namine have feelings for each other... you get what I mean.
Xion and Roxas always felt sorta platonic to me personally, though I see the potential for the ship, I just don’t feel strongly about it (which could always change through roleplay--my favorite ships are ones I just happened to discover!). I think they make really sweet friends. c:
Other than that, there’s no other character I see romantically involved with Roxas canonly.
16. What is your personal ship bias for your canon character?
Roxas x Happiness
Pfft, but a more serious answer: I used to ship Roxas and Olette when I was young. Like I just always thought it was so cute and tragic... these days, I don’t have a strong ship I care for when it comes to Roxas (oddly enough?). I could see him being with a slew of characters, but there’s no spark in it yet, like I gotta discover the real potential through actual roleplay with someone.
Right now, I’m down for anything feasible where there is chemistry, ya kno?
maregiis:
If Kairi’s heart was meant to be pure light, why did she have such suspicious thoughts that lurked hidden deep within? The kind that tell her, nothing of hers was earned.
This tropical haven she so adored, her fate was written for her to come here. To doom many. The same many that spoke so highly of her… would they do it if she weren’t the mayor’s daughter? Her grades were only good because she didn’t want to make him look bad – If she had it her way, she wouldn’t suffer a moment of schoolwork. Riku always did tell her she was as lazy as Sora…
Even now, as she sits beside Roxas, warmed by the seabreeze but shaking in their uncertain cadence, he tries to speak so kindly to her… low and gentle. to hide the darkest parts of his mind from her. She didn’t earn that tenderness. not really. Whether he’s being polite or… or whether Sora had influenced him. This tether between them, she didn’t do anything to deserve it.
Even this light of mine wasn’t earned. And the moment I thought I had a chance to prove myself, to fight, I failed miserably. None of my accomplishments are my own.
I’m an imposter.
There was one thing she always felt was her own, though. Sora. He didn’t care that she was the mayor’s daughter, where she came from – or even what was in her heart. He never tried too hard to impress her, all he had – all he needed, really – was to be himself. He made her feel normal, yet worshiped for simply being.
Which makes it hurt sometimes to look at Roxas. To know that somewhere in these sad eyes of hers, she does soften to be reminded of Sora. It’s… horrible. Really. Roxas wasn’t her band-aid for a missing friend – he wasn’t leftovers for her to pick at. And yet she couldn’t help seeking the comfort of his company, when she felt most weak, most lonely. He was nothing like Sora, really, it’s… funny to think anyone could compare the two… ( does this disappoint her…? ) yet the reminders come. And this tether between the two of them, it could not be ignored.
Kairi wasn’t keen on pushing him away for it. Even if their friendship wasn’t earned, her concern was authentic.
So when he hides himself from her like this, when she can tell there’s agony building in painful lumps in the throat, it makes her worry what exactly it is he thinks he has to do. Does he think it means he has to put space between her? Between the others? She wishes she had the courage to tell him that he doesn’t have to figure things out alone.
But she knows she doesn’t have the strength to back it up, not yet. So she bites her tongue. Guides from afar. Letting her heart continue to be the lighthouse for when they brave those stormy waters. Much like the ocean she stares out into, right this moment, the one that she doesn’t… quite know what it means to Roxas. Because she’s scared one day he will flat out tell her that he hates it here.
she’s so sensitive. so selfish.
❝ I like us too, Roxas. ❞
It’s not a lie to say so. Despite all of the ugly things she may feel in the privacy of her mind, there is still goodness in her that can’t pull away from a friend. The kind that makes her heart light up when he agrees to sit with her – even when they barely exchange a word. So why waste words with sugar coated lies? She gives him her honesty back. ❝ Whatever is hurting your heart right now, whatever you think you have to do… well, I don’t know if everyone will hate you, don’t really believe they could. But I hope it helps just a bit, to promise you that I won’t. ❞
She turns to him, smiling sweetly.
❝ You’ve always been nice to me. And you never tell me ‘no’ when I drag you out here, even when I think sometimes you get sick of it, hehe! ❞ She laughs, but she knows the air is thick with unspeakables. She knows this moment is meant to be serious. But this is the best Kairi can do without outright dropping to her knees and begging him to tell her what’s wrong.
She is light. Light ought to make everything happier… warmer.
❝ So… I’ll support you! No matter what! Kay? ❞
Is her light just a temporary distraction? Perhaps it’s she who is the band-aid.
♡ ――― He listens to her equally nice words knocked back his way--
And he’s so sick of it.
He’s so sick of playing this game with her, with all of them. Wearing this happy mask as if he’s as good as Sora.
But Roxas knows he never had much patience for masking his heart. He’s always worn his feelings right on his sleeve, too stubborn to hide them. It makes so much sense to him now--that’s why he feels so suffocated here on the islands, he’s been forced to smile along with everyone else when all he wants to do is scream.
SHE IS LIGHT...
And Roxas is shadow, not unlike this twinkling night around them now. It’s so sweet the way the stars shine on for them, the way the waves sweep onto a glistening shore... this world is paradise. He’s been given a happy ending many would kill for--
And even so he doesn’t trust it.
He’s sick of all this.
So he turns to her, blue eyes sparkling like a boy she used to know, but his expression is serious, all hard lines and an honesty that could likely cut them both wide open.
“Kairi, you’re saying all this... and you don’t even know what I’m going to do... and... I wanna know why,” Roxas says firmly, his voice hard but not cold, his tone like a line drawn in the sand. “Do you trust me ‘cause... I’m Sora’s Nobody? That because I’m connected to Sora, I couldn’t do anything too bad, right?”
He’s still looking at her directly, his eyes and heart as bright as those stars shining above them.
“Look, I’m not gonna treat you like Sora did--I don’t believe in taking choices away from people. And before you say it, Sora did take your choice away. He left you here, told you to wait. But be honest with me Kairi, is that what you wanna do? Just rot on this shore while everyone fights your battles for you? I mean, I know what it’s like--everyone keeping you in the dark, only using you when it’s convenient for them, leaving you behind and you never know where your friends go...” Roxas trails off, scoffing into the dark. “I guess... I just don’t get why you put up with it.”
He finally looks back out to the ocean, at those churning waves sparkling under the moonlight.
“You’ll support me no matter what without knowing where I’m gonna go... and I can’t help but think it’s ‘cause you’re used to that--blindly trusting your friends because they left you no other choice,” Roxas murmurs and the words burn like crackling flames.
