Scarlet Jasmines
Kalim x Jamil hanahaki (cw: blood)
Kalim wasn't very surprised that morning when he felt the need to throw up, only to be met with those white petals of the flowers his attendant loved.Â
He should’ve known this would happen eventually, after the incident there was no way Jamil liked him back, he already said he hated him.
His thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door from the boy who caused this.Â
"Kalim, if you're already awake, get ready for school. Breakfast is almost done," Jamil said curtly before walking off.Â
Kalim wiped his mouth with his hand and could only really stare down at the blood that came with the flower petals.Â
He got up, washed his hands and face and stepped out of the bathroom to get ready for the day.Â
After a bit, Jamil came in again, "Good, you're dre-did you do your bow all by yourself? It's a mess." He said, almost sounding offended.Â
Kalim gulped and quickly faced Jamil with his usual bright smile, "Yep! Thought I'd give it a try today!" He laughed.Â
Jamil sighed, "Idiot," he walked over and untied the scarf from around his head, refashioning it into the proper bow like he'd done so many times before.Â
Kalim smiled up at him, though his heart ached more than ever, "Thanks Jamil! But seriously let me handle it from now on, you've got a lot of stuff to handle already."Â
Jamil didn't like that Kalim said that, he knew when Kalim insisted on doing things himself that he was upset about something…and that it was best to leave him be until he ran to Jamil in tears. He'd just have to wait for that to happen, like always.Â
Kalim could feel the petals tickle his throat again as he watched Jamil begin to walk away.
"I just remembered, I have club this morning, go ahead and eat without me. Lilia is bound to have a snack I can eat before class."Â
Before Jamil could respond that he knew Kalim didn't have a meeting today the boy ran out in front of him, not even saying goodbye.Â
"He's just a little upset…he'll come talk to me the second he can't take it" he thought, really hoping he was right.Â
~~
Jamil didn't like that Kalim wasn't answering his texts, he always answered right away, but since he left for 'club' he was just reading them.Â
He had to get to the bottom of this.Â
Thankfully lunch was right after this period, so as soon as this class finished he'd go talk to Kalim while they ate.Â
"Settle down class, it's not lunch just yet" Mozus said, "Today we'll be going over magic diseases, turn in your textbooks to page 96."
Jamil did so, looking at the page as Mozus began to speak.Â
"Roots of unrequited love or more simply known as hanahaki disease. It's a rare sickness in which a person whose feelings for someone are not returned, thus they cough up flower petals and blood, if they do not have the flower removed it will slowly begin to kill them."Â
Jamil listened silently but his mind began to drift towards Kalim…what could be bothering him so much?
His thoughts continued until class finally ended. He quickly got up and made his way to the cafeteria where Kalim was as expected.Â
"Kalim, come with me, we're going to eat outside." Jamil grabbed his wrist which Kalim froze at but didn't protest.Â
"Ah, yeah ok!" He said cheerfully, though he was panicking inside, his coughing has gotten worse through the day, now that Jamil was here his throat hurt more than ever.Â
He was led outside and sat down as Jamil opened up his lunchbox, "here, I packed you fish with rice and vegetables, make sure you eat it all since you didn't have breakfast."Â
"Right, looks great Jamil, I'm starved." He said before taking a bite of the food.
It was delicious as always, Jamil's food was amazing…and it hurt, it hurt so bad.Â
He started coughing, before Jamil could do anything, blood and petals came falling out of Kalim's mouth.Â
"Kalim! Hey come on, let's go to the nurse, you'll be O…kay…" he trailed as Kalim looked at him with blank eyes with tears streaming down his face.
"Ja…mil…"Â
It was all he could sputter before passing out.Â
Jamil stayed frozen before suddenly grabbing Kalim and rushing as fast as he could to the nurses office.Â
~~
Kalim slowly began to wake up somewhere, he couldn't move but his throat and now chest hurt.Â
"What do you mean you can't do the surgery without contacting his parents?! He's dying! If he dies now then what do you tell his parents then?! Jamil yelled at the doctor.Â
"Listen young man, we're doing what we can with the time we have, but unless his parents can get here we can't perform the surgery."Â
Jamil groaned and walked into Kalim's room and pulled his phone out, dialing a number, "Come on come on, pick up…" he mumbled.Â
"Jamil…?" Kalim asked with a hoarse voice.Â
The boy turned away from the phone and rushed over to him, "Kalim! Hey, what happened? What jerk doesn't like you back? I'll give him hell!" He yelled, helping him sit up.Â
Kalim couldn't help but start crying again, "don't…it…it wouldn't help" he whimpered.Â
"I just need to know who it is, I don't like seeing you suffer, I need to let him know so-"
"There's no point…there's no point in hurting yourself over me, you've done that enough…"Â
Jamil went silent. Hurting himself over Kalim…
"It's…me?" He asked.Â
Kalim could only nod, "I already hurt you enough, I'll be ok even if you don't like me back."Â
Jamil could only grit his teeth, starting to cry himself.Â
"Idiot! Who let you decide that I didn't love you?! I know what I said when I overblotted but I'm over that! I love you more than anyone, if I lose you, what's the point of me waking up every day if you're not there smiling at me and enjoying my presence?!"Â
He began sobbing and stared at Kalim with sadness and anger.Â
"Don't you die on me…don't…Kalim I can't lose you…" he mumbled, grabbing his hand and holding it to his face, "Don't die."Â
Kalim stared at him before slowly bringing his other hand up and caressing Jamil's face softly.Â
"I'm sorry Jamil, I didn't mean to scare you, but I thought you'd reject me immediately, that's why I didn't say anything…"Â
Jamil leaned into his touch, gently kissing the hand he was holding, "We tell each other everything and I mean everything from now on, do it or no coconut juice til you graduate," he huffed slightly.Â
Kalim giggled, "I promise, so let me tell you that I love you."Â
He received another kiss on his hand and then one on his forehead, "I love you too, Kalim."Â
~~
Days later, Kalim hummed a happy tune as Jamil helped him get dressed for school.Â
He watched as Jamil tied the bow on his head before gently placing a kiss on top.Â
Kalim blushed lightly, "You've been dying to do that haven't you?" He asked his boyfriend.Â
Jamil blushed as well, "I don't know what you're talking about…but yes."Â
He stood up and grabbed his hand, "Come on, I need to get going to class since I got all that makeup work."Â
"Right, if you need help just tell me, I can't have you getting held back."Â
"If I do well will you make my favorite dinner?"Â
"I don't recall making such a promise."Â
"Pleeeeeeeeeeease?"Â
"Ugh, fine, only cuz you're begging me."Â
"Yay!"Â
The new couple walked out of the room, standing close together. Hands intertwined, never to separate.
