Denmark: by Kasper Hoglund
25-year-old F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” was first published in Collier’s on 27 May 1922.
Inspired by an idea stated by Mark Twain that “the best part of life came at the beginning and the worst part at the end,” Fitzgerald wrote that shortly after he finished the story, he discovered “an almost identical plot” in the writings of Samuel Butler.
“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” was published at the height of Fitzgerald’s fame, shortly after the birth of his daughter (October 1921), and the success of his 2nd novel, The Beautiful and the Damned (March 1922). The story was included in Tales of the Jazz Age, published in September 1922.
