“It's not the way you talk, it's the way you lie when you talk. Lies buried so deep that I can barely sense them and that only happens when you've been telling them long enough, or when you start to believe them yourself.” Julian took a half step forward, he didn't like to be threatening but it wasn't something he was unaccustomed to. He dealt enough powerful people to know when he needed to let people know he wasn't someone to be messed with.
“And one way or another I will figure out what secrets you're keeping, the question you need to ask yourself is how many people are going to find out I'm digging if you don't cooperate and I have to start talking to other people and get suspicious as well.” Because when someone started digging, everyone started to get curious. And if word got out that Julian thought Percy was keeping something from camp? There wouldn't be much doubt that it was true, and the only question would be what is he hiding from everyone.
"Am I lying about war plans?" Percy pointed out. "Am I lying when I say I'd rather die than betray us to Luke? Am I lying when I say I'll do anything to protect the camp? No?"
He took one step forward to Julian, but that was all. It was all he needed to make his point. With Julian's half step, they were close enough.
"I tell the truth about stuff that involves other people," Percy said simply. "Lying about what my favorite kind of sandwich is, that's my business. Try focusing on the shit that matters, there's a war that's about to hit."
"Yes, the prophecy wasn't exactly about me though. It was about my future son." The prophecy had said that Zeus first wife would bare a son who had power to rival the king himself, it hadn't even said that he would be a threat. But Zeus had taken that as a threat, and he had tried to make sure it wouldn't be a problem. "It said that I would have a son who would become more powerful than Zeus, but I don't know that it applies to you. You were born when I was mortal,"
But the fates always found away to make sure prophecies came true one way or another, there was a chance that it still did apply to him. "but that doesn't mean Zeus won't try to be sure that you can't be a threat. No matter how much anyone tries to tell him you aren't. That's why we had to run, somehow Zeus found out. Nyx was our best chance at safety, she said that she would tell your father what happened." She was a little worried about the reaction Amphitrite would have when she found out Zeus had come after her, but she would deal with that once Nyx was back and could reunite her with her godly essence.
"Your future son?" Percy protested. His mind was going too fast to fully absorb that. It gave too many options for wild thoughts, too many ways to set his head spinning. His arms now had bundled up a backpack of things: a teddy he'd seen Sally fawn over in his early days, the gift from Poseidon, some fresh underwear. He was pretty sure Annabeth would applaud a bit of forward thought.
"How can I be a threat? I just got a sword." Percy pointed out. "And... the whole, you know, you were mortal bit. That's got to.. help."
"You've made friends there, Percy. If you want to stay with other kids like you in a place that was made for people like you I wont hold it against you. Finding a place to belong is powerful, and you deserve that choice." At his words though she nodded.
"We can talk about it more later though, Nyx is waiting for us outside. We'll have to swim out." It shouldn't be an issue for Percy, and it certainly wouldn't be an issue for her now that she had her divinity back. She was born an Oceanid before she was considered anything else after all.
"They're not that much like me," Percy said simply. "No where near enough I'd just leave and never see you again! No way!"
He'd gone a long time with precious few friends. Grover had been like a diamond in the rough, but that just meant one thing. He knew how to get through life without friends. He'd do it a thousand times over if it meant the chance to stick by his mother. She seemed to get that and he inhaled with relief. "On the bright side, I'm super good at swimming now."

"What? Why would you even say that? Gross!"
"And you can see how that's a problem given what happened with Luke, right?" The question was somewhat rhetorical, because he didn't see how anyone couldn't see how lying constantly would be a problem after the recent betrayal of the camp.
He glanced around, no one was really near them but there were other campers walking around. "Why don't we head into your cabin? Because I'm not gonna drop this, but whatever your secret you obviously don't want the whole camp overhearing." He figured that being in his cabin was a good middle ground.
He couldn't imagine that he would want to go somewhere secluded with someone he didn't know, but his cabin was his field - and attacking a demigod in their own cabin was never a good idea. They were practically the camps versions of temples, and the god's wouldn't take it likely..
"Nooot really?" Percy said, his voice tilting upwards as he shrugged. People like Annabeth, who mattered, they knew not to listen to him. And even if he hadn't told Annabeth that he was a liar, everyone else just knew that he wasn't the smartest guy around, so why bother anyway. "Seems pretty simple to me.
"Luke is Luke," Percy shrugged. "I don't try to convince people how to feel about their parents, I just go to the camp activities and back again. I'm not going around and whispering in peoples' ears."
Percy straightened and looked over Julian. The guy seemed just on the edge of mad, and that could be worrying. "Look, man, if the way I talk is bothering you, you could just not listen to me talk. I mean, that is an option."
"Another lie, every time you say something it feels like someone is rubbing microfiber cloth inside my ear drums." Julian told him, shifting back on his heels as he looked down at him and stuffing his hands into his pockets as he resisted the urge to force the truth out of him.
He nodded at the question though. "Yeah, graduated. But after what happened with Luke I figured maybe someone who could hear lies would be helpful around here." Telling him that he could compel truths as well seemed better kept to himself, since he didn't seem to know. If he needed to use the power, someone not expecting it made it take a lot less energy.
"Right." He said again. Okay. So this wasn't going to go well at all. He could try to come up with something that was technically true, he did that all the time with Annabeth, and she wasn't a living lie detector. The problem was, that took a lot of time, and, well.
Just like the other Gifts of Apollo that kept him from going anywhere near the Infirmary, he didn't know how it worked. He didn't know how much this guy could feel, or what it could tell him. So all he could do was just sort of deal.
"Yeah, well, Percy Jackson, Resident Liar. Nice to meet you," He said, tapping two fingers to his forehead. "You can ask Annabeth, I'm very upfront about that, lying is like breathing for me. I tell people all the time not to listen to me."
There it was again, that weird feeling of a muffled lie. It was almost like when people told a lie that they didn't fully realize was one, but not quite the same. Like it was told for so long that it had almost become truth. "Yeah, my names Julian Locke. I'm a son of Apollo." He told him before he let his voice drop a little quieter, not wanting anyone else to hear.
"And I want to know why everything you say sounds like its buried under a a carefully constructed tower of lies." He didn't let him reply before he added on. "And don't try to lie to me about it, most people don't consider that Apollo is the God of Truth but he is. And I can hear when someone is lying."
"... cool," Percy said with a careful, slow nod. It wasn't cool, at least not beyond the word being a general tone of 'yes, I heard you and acknowledge that'. It wasn't cool at all. See, this was the problem with halfbloods. It sounded insane once he got past that big fancy tree, but as long as he was here, there was a very good chance this guy wasn't lying at all.
"I don't know what you're talking about. That's okay, though, because I never know what people are talking about, you can ask around." Percy said, and tried to wave the guy off. "It's nice to meet you, Julian. I think I've heard about you, did you graduate or something?"

Julian didn't mean to stare at the son of Poseidon the way he was, but he couldn't help it. Not everything the younger demi-god said felt like an outright lie, but everything he said sounded like it was muffled by a lie - like he was talking into a pillow. On top of that most movements he made felt like something he'd been trained to do rather than a conscious choice, like every so often he realized he needed to course correct what he was doing.
He didn't know what it was, he'd encountered people like that before. When he was young and went to d.isney w.orld with his mother that was the exact feeling he got from all the character actors - like what they were doing and saying wasn't entirely a lie but it might as well be because it wasn't right. It was also the feeling he got when interviewing someone trying to cover things up.
People were entitled to keeping their own secrets, and normally? He wouldn't push it. But with everything that had been happening in camp lately? With the amount of demi-gods joining Luke's side? Someone keeping something about them so hidden behind a wall of dishonesty felt like something he needed to address.
And so when he started away from the other campers back towards his cabin Julian started towards him, taking to long steps to catch up before he could get into his cabin. "Percy Jackson, right?" He asked as he stepped up next to him.
Percy had gotten used to people knowing his name, or at least, knowing the general idea of who he was. Or, who he was supposed to be. Back home, it had more to do with the man-hunts for him, the BOLOs, the missing kid posters his mom had made. At school, it was like that, too, but sometimes it also had to do with that time he maybe sort of attacked the gym teacher with a pen and then that teacher disappeared.
What else was he supposed to do when your gym teacher turns out to be a bird-lady?
At camp, though, it was different. He was known for his sword skills. His speed. He was known for something good, for once, so when this guy came up to him, already knowing who he was, he just quipped back classically, "Yeah, man. You need something?"
“...”
“But I'm not a fish?”
"You do live in the ocean and spend much of your time being hunted by larger predators but sure, it's the gills that's the issue—oh, wait!" Percy snapped his fingers. "You do breathe under water."

“I absolutely hate that I’m not bioluminescent. Pathetic.”
"It probably wouldn't be all that great. My brother used to go night fishing, he'd always catch the bioluminescent ones first."
“Maybe not an Olympian, but she's still a Goddess in her own right.” Sally said before catching herself. “She is after all your Dad's wife, being Queen of the Sea must mean something.” And it did to Poseidon, he always valued Amphitrites council to the point that he said he would stand by her if she went against Zeus for her sake.
“Hes seems like a good kid, Amphitrites done good with him. He seemed a little nervous though when he got here, was he worried I'd be upset meeting him?” She hadn't meant to do it, but she had become a safe spot for a lot of Percy's camp friends. She didn't want any of them feeling uncomfortable with her, especially him. That felt wrong, but she chalked it up to who his mother was.
"Yeah, but Persephone's kids aren't in the Hades cabin. I think Perci's just sort of like that," Percy shrugged. His eyes dropped more, going to his fingertips, watching how they worked. "You should see him on the training field. He can basically take on anyone."
He pressed his mouth closed and thought for a moment. "He hasn't been out of the ocean or camp for a while. That stresses a lot of campers, even Annabeth doesn't like it. And she's Annabeth."
Sally did in fact spend a good amount of time watching Perci well trying not to be obvious about it, she told herself it was just because he was her sisters son. If she was honest with herself though? Something about him felt familiar.
"He seems nice." She had almost offered to let the kids stay the night so that she could talk to him more, but she had realized that might seem weird. "He said he lives with his Mom in Atlantis? That's not normal for the gods is it?" She knew it wasn't, but asking was less conspicuous then it's stating it with certainty
"Perci isn't really normal," Percy shrugged one shoulder, his eyes trailing away from Sally. He was stuck staring into the middle distance, lost in thought as his mind was occupied by his... whatever in Tartarus his relationship with Perci was.
"I mean, he's not a child of the Olympians, but he still goes to camp. I guess he's just special like that." He tried to say, even though Perci was. They just pretending he wasn't.

"A golden apple?" Lilia let out of a derisive laugh. "No thanks, kid. Those things cause trouble."
Now, gold coins she might actually have a use for. As they came in sight of a battered looking compact Toyota that looked old enough to almost be called vintage, Lilia pressed the lock on her car keys. "You can put your bag in the back seat."
Despite its worn look, it was clean inside and the only clutter was in the form of a few charms and sigils dotted around the dash.
"Right," she began as she sat in the driver's seat, taking a breath as she got herself comfortable. "What was the address again?"
"Then I'll see if there's something else. The gods always leave stuff laying around, and my dad likes me. He won't mind if I take something," Percy said. "I'll try and get something for mom, too. He's never paid child support."
He tossed his bag into the back and clamored inside. He'd had a distaste for moving vehicles for a while, but that was something he'd had to get over, and pretty quickly. He didn't have much to say about the state of her car, it seemed to be pretty on par with his mom's, and that had been in a fight with a minotaur (he won). With her question, he reached back again and dug into his bag, pulling out the questing sheet. "Here. You can read better than I can, I bet."
Lilia felt a lot of sympathy for the boy. Most kids felt out of place at his age, like they didn't belong, but when you had real reasons for feeling that way, the school only working to emphasise that had to feel like a heavy weight that was difficult to shake.
"I've done a lot of readings for people who are painfully normal," she told him. "Their futures mostly hold disappointment. Maybe weird isn't such a bad thing."
She gave him a supportive smile that became a laugh as he questioned her own isolation.
"It's hard to keep in the habit of having a social circle after a few centuries. Especially when you've had to escape an angry mob or five in that time."
"I've spent a long time trying to make your dictionaries make sense," Percy pointed out. "I've never seen 'weird' with wanted, or welcome"
At least he was getting the hang of pretending to be normal. Sometimes it made Sally happy; when he came home and told her that he'd made a friend, she seemed relieved.
"I've seen mobs in movies. Both kinds. They seem scary," Percy said. "Do they still have mobs these days? That's why you're always alone?"
