At first I wanted to draw her as a princess because I absolutely loved her when I was a child and, was obviously heartbroken when her relationship with Duncan was over…As toxic as it was.

And I gave her another outfit because I like to imagine her with a school girl outfit like in these old school American movies.

I like to imagine that she was trying to hide but Sierra caught her crying in a closet and took a pic of her with a title like “SHES STILL CRYING LIKE GURL MOVE OOOOOON!!!!!!”

Despite all the things that could seem right about Gwen and Duncan as a relationship, every time I try to come up with anything for them I am just acutely aware of how much more passion Duncan had for Courtney. This is the only thing keeping me from being more invested in their relationship as I think had it occurred under different circumstances, even more people would care about it.

I don’t doubt that Gwen overall treated Duncan better than Courtney did. She seems like the natural choice for Duncan. It’s just that fact blocks me from caring about their relationship. A relationship is far more than just liking similar movies or having banter. Chemistry, passion, compatibility and principles matter. Superficial differences don’t matter. I would argue that I see more similar inner traits and principles in Courtney and Duncan. I believe Gwen to be a nicer person than Courtney.

I think Courtney can really let loose and jump on the table and start dancing or something and Duncan would think that’s so cool. I genuinely believe Courtney can be a wild child and Duncan loves to bring that out. I think they are also alike in how they treat other people, and both can be very selfish. Gwen, I think, is a bit too good for Duncan.

I think that Gwen and Duncan, beneath the superficial, have less in common than you’d expect. Gwen is generally concerned about the welfare of others in a way that Duncan and Courtney aren’t. Gwen is concerned about global issues and injustice. Duncan doesn’t believe in taking life all that serious. Gwen is also more “deep” I guess you could say. She has her moods and wants to be alone with her journaling and art. I don’t think Duncan would quite get that. I think he’d prefer riling his girlfriend up so she can yell at him and show him how much she really cares, in a weird twisted way. At least until it’s exhausting. Duncan might find Gwen to be sulky as she retreats quietly into her corner to be with her emotions.

Even in the things that they have in common, like a gore horror movie with extreme violence that they both love, I think Gwen would approach it differently than Duncan. Say, she may be interested in the meaning, context and symbolism of the movie, and concerned with the director’s intent. Yes it looks so cool to her, but the psycho killer dropping his own father’s head into the wood chipper was symbolic of the psycho killer reclaiming his identity and not wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps, culminating in an act of extreme violence and rejection of the environment that created him. That’s how I think Gwen would think! Duncan I think, would not care and say it looks cool.

I am definitely due for a rewatch and sometimes it’s tricky to analyse as characters are not really written consistently if I’m being honest. So this is entirely from memory. This is why I keep chosing Duncan to be with Courtney even though Gwen treats him better and has more common interests.

Duncan and Courtney from Total Drama Island are such an insane relationship. Duncan's rebellious and a bad boy and Courtney's ridiculously Type A.

Duncan is dangerous and cutthroat if it means he'll win, but then so is Courtney. Courtney claims she hates him and doesn't vote him out. Duncan claims he hates her and howls like a wolf when he sees her do flexible things.

Courtney walks him like a dog-- he thinks about her all the time, has a picture of her underneath his pillow, carves a heart into a wooden bust of her head, etc. Courtney tries to play off her obsession with him like it's perfectly natural but she can never really shake it.

They break up and get back together and break up. Courtney claims it was never going to last forever and is devastated when it doesn't. Duncan cheats on her with a girl who's definitely more chill but can't enjoy it because he's still thinking about her.

They both drift away from each other but they can never really escape the what-could've-been because it was beautiful for a brief moment and they'll never feel that with anyone else, no matter how hard either of them try.

I feel like Bridgette should be meaner to Duncan in more fics. A lot of fanfics post breakup have her be chill with him because he’s Geoff’s friend but if you watch season 1, Bridgette did not like that boy lol. The barely interact past that (mainly cuz the writers loved to ignore all the fun behind the scenes friendships they had already established- I mourn the friendship Bridgette and Courtney could have had with Gwen and leshawna). Bridgette liked Courtney and knew they had a thing for each other, but she could live without Duncan. Obviously in my world, I believe in killer bass 5 friendship supremacy and would love them to actually bond outside of her being his friends gf/him being her friend bf- but I find certain fics hard to believe cuz there’s no way that Bridgette would be friends with Duncan after him cheating on her, especially in fics where td never happened.

Started thinking up some Duncan hc’s last night, where he was hospitalized as a little kid with something like a congenital heart defect and needed surgery at like 4/5. The experience made his dad more strict with him as a way to protect his son but his mom on the other hand became more lenient in discipline because ‘he’s already been through so much.’

This is in no way just an excuse for me to make the bad pun that the reason he’s a jerk is because he was born with a hole in his heart.

I also really wanna draw baby Duncan in a hospital bed with his mom reading to him or something, the night before his surgery kind of thing. If I get the proper motivation boy get ready for some FEELS
