Barbara Lynn – Nice & Easy • 1971
Absolute classic from 1971. I love this woman's voice.
Linda Griner – Goodbye Cruel Love • 1964
Diana Ross – Behind Closed Doors • 1973
Diana Ross is fantastic isn't she? I mean what girl didn't sit at home back combing their hair in hope for the same mane? This is one of my all time favourites which comes from the 1973 album 'Last Time I Saw Him'.
Lack of Afro – Making it Right (feat. Juliette Ashby) • 2014
It's quite hard to pick one favourite from this album as there's a few good ones on here. But the sweetness in Juliette Ashby's voice makes this a winner. So lovely.
Phyllis Dillon – Picture On The Wall • 1971
I have a terrible habit of getting hooked on a song and playing it again, and again, and again. This is one of them. Phyllis Dillon is a reggae wonder, her voice is just wonderful and this is just beautifulcover of Freddy McKay's 'Picture on the wall'.
Betty Wright – Shoorah! Shoorah! • 1974
I blooming love this song. We were lucky enough to get tickets to see Betty Wright play in Manchester a couple of years ago. She was amazing and captivated every single person in the audience with her flawless voice and sass. This little number from 1974 wasn't on the set list unfortuantly... which means it just gets played double at home. At one time this was my Monday morning hype tune to get me out the door to work.
Gwen Owens – Just Say You're Wanted (And Needed) • 1966
Such a tune! That voice and that beat. Fantastic little number from 1966.
Joyce Jones – Help Me Make Up My Mind • 1969
A little funky soul number by Joyce Jones from 1969. There is another version of this song by Tyrone Davis (which came out a little later in 1972), which from what I can gather is response to this particular version. They're both fantastic with quite different sounds.
Jennie Smith – It's Murder For Roberta • 1962
Here is Jennie Smith with Murder for Roberta. It was released in 1962, It's super catchy and a definite hip shaker despite how sad it actually is, poor old Roberta is in love to only realise the love isn't actually to be returned.
Bettye Swann – Make Me Yours • 1967
Here is Bettye Swann (who was 1 of 14 kids!)... again another song that I struggle to tire of. This was written by Bettye herself and released in 1967 on Money Records.
Joy Lovejoy – In Orbit • 1967
So I've decided to get back on the blog wagon... Here's a new one dedicated to music. So first up has got to be my all time favourite, In Orbit by the wonderful and mysterious Joy Lovejoy. Produced in 1967 and not a single trace of her identity it's one of few songs I can never tire of. There's no other known tracks by this lady and with such a fantastic name makes this a very special song indeed. God forbid if this doesn't make you want to dance!
