SweetTaboo Rehearsals
Friday 2nd August Today's rehearsal was a stretch. Not gona lie at all. Last day of the week, everyone is pushing the their limits. I must commend on the positivity though.
When all are on the same page, the bigger picture is put above personal fatigue and we strive to muster that last bit of creativity left. Micheal Buffong came in to watch what we've put together so far and from the laughs I heard from him, I think its safe to say that he enjoyed what we rustled up. That being said, "Man was nervous STILL, ya get me dow!"
The last day of the week has given the weekend some direction. I'm gona go away and think on how to make my character more believable so I have more to offer the group next week!
Till then,
Peace and Chicken grease!

So after a week and a half we have already covered so much. After exploring a lot of movement last week, we have moved into the exciting realm of character building.
From taboo ridden stiff upper lippers to free spirited taboo busting eccentrics. We've seen it all.
Among the group there's a real feeling of excitment for what is to come. Every day is an opportunity to explore, question and learn.
Well folks, I'm late for our comedy workshop so I'm gonna leave it there. See you on the 15th, 16th, and 17th. Peace, love and blessings.

Week 2 of rehearsals is well underway so here's what we got up to last week...

Jungle is Massive - Day 4 of rehearsals
What a day! Kick started with a badman jungle warm up from Coral which got everyone buzzing and excited for the day's events, little did we know what would happen later on! After watching a video on homosexuality and homophobia in Africa, a lot of people were hurt by hatred and the lack of education, it brought a lot of issues close to home to mind. As a group we had each other for support which is always comforting- thank you Mojisola for the uplifting words & song. Not wanting to end on a sad note, I just go back to the freestyle we composed with Conrad to remember my personal favourite lyric today from Gabriel: 'I said damnnn whatta nice vagina!'
What a day today was! I was feeling pretty dark after the thunder storm last night, but today's burlesque workshop woke me and a few others up! Since we are still a new group some we all had our little insecurities and inhibitions but by the end I feel like we all grew and felt a sense of liberation. Exploring our inner power and sexuality in a non judgemental environment was like a type of therapy. Everyone has an inner freak and its great to get it out every once in a while! Thank you to Coral for opening that door for us ;)

Sweet Taboo rehearsals DAY ONE
Sun shining, breeze blowing, and at 10am in the talawa studios everyone sat round the table eating fruits and talking about a number of different things. Silent excitement buzzed throughout the room as we awaited our "formal" start to TYPT.
The day began with us sitting with the TYPT crew and general introductions to what we are going to be doing over the next few weeks. Mojisola (our director) began by expressing how important it was for us to understand that the theatre we make needs to leave the audience thinking and evoke a number of different reactions/emotions from them. Moji is all about making ground-breaking theatre and we're all behind her!
Once the formal introductions were out of the way, we started the physical side of things. The lovely coral led a warm up, which included some stretching and planking (I was definitely not doing it right, but by the end of TYPT I know coral will make me a planking queen! Lol)
We then went on to do movement/dancing to music, and used a routine we had previously learnt but also incorporated emotion into some of those movements and observed what story lines where being created from that. We also focused on infatuation with body, parts but not necessarily the "obvious choices"...lets just say there was alot of elbow admiration going on today! Haha!
Towards the end of the day we watched some material about taboo and how what is considered taboo is ever-changing, so much interesting discussion came up and I can't wait to see and discuss more with my TYPT crew!
Overall it was an absolutely awesome day! Bring on tomorrow! :)
