My imp #myimp

Backup character for descent into avernus (mild campaign spoiler details below)

I prepped this a long time ago as a backup in case my Descent Into Avernus PC died; the conceit is that the imp is presented as your main character but is actually just a familiar for the plasmid that lives inside the reliquary. I was inspired by some cool "character in a box" ideas I'd seen online, and was also kinda trying to find a way to make a plasmid that felt like it fit in with more conventional d&d campaign settings. Fakeout characters are kind of tired but they're a lot of fun to make. Lore-wise, a feature of the DIA campaign as our DM ran it is that religious imagery and artifacts around the city were warped by its descent into hell. In this case, the saint's blood inside the reliquary would have been awakened as a sentient being (using plasmid game stats) and bound an imp to its will.

Mechanically, I'd be re-flavouring the Genie patron warlock for the magic-lamp-style pocket dimension shenanigans, and using mostly spells that don't need line of sight. When needed, the imp could be my eyes. There's a decent number of spells that could work with this, and worst case you can always poke a pseudopod out of the hole in the reliquary.

The reveal would ideally happen after level 10, when you can pull your party into your 'bottle' with you to rest and recuperate... and confront them with a big puddle of red goo. We had a spectrum of fantasy-atheist (ish) to fantasy-catholic characters in the group, so it would be fun to see how different people reacted. Maybe some other time!

My entry for the spring 2025 Buddies Quarterly Zine, another small story about being just a little guy rat. I was thinking a lot about that Ursula K Le Guin quote about capitalism when I made it, seeing friends lose jobs or go through tough times and watching systemic problems worsen out in the world. Buddies Quarterly Issue #2 - Spring 2025

So excited to share Buddies Quarterly Issue #2 with y'all! There's some real primo work in this issue which is nearly twice as long as our first!

Buddies Quarterly is a zine featuring the works of some longtime buddies who just love to make stuff. There's no rules or themes for issues. It's a space for us to create and share whatever we wish to, as long as it fits a half letter page and comes in multiples of four. We're trying to print for cheap, lol.

This issue introduces the work of a new buddy... SAM HALL!

Sam is not a new buddy in the irl buddy sense, but this is her first submission to the zine (although her visage appears in Ash's piece from issue #1). Funnily enough, her submission introduces the other buddies with a little help from you. Doesn't that sound fun!?
