A vintage squeeze chute now serves as seating in the UC Davis Animal Science GATEway Garden. Squeeze chutes are strongly built stalls that hold #livestock during examination, veterinary treatment, etc. now it's a great place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of #campus and learn more about our world-class animal science programs. A team of UC Riverside researchers has found that flowers can pose a grave danger to bees by providing a platform of parasites to visiting bees.

“Flowers are hotspots for parasite spread between and within pollinator populations,” said Peter Graystock, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Entomology at the UCR and a member of the research team.

The study is the first to show that not only can bees disperse parasites around the environment but also that flowers are platforms for a host of pollinator parasites subsequently dispersed onto visiting bees.

By showing that visits from parasite-carrying bees can turn flowers into parasite platforms, we can say that it is likely that heavily visited flowers may become more ‘dirty’ with bee parasites. Planting more flowers would provide bees with more options, and parasite spread may thus be reduced.

Carmen Godinez, recent landscape architecture graduate (and looking for a job!), and Haven Kiers, lecturer with the UC Davis landscape architecture program and special projects manager for us, advised on this great project and also helped plant Arboretum All-Stars on the roof of the West Sacramento Community Center (a LEED-certified building) along with staff from the West Sac Parks and Grounds Department. Arboretum All-Stars are plants that our horticulturists have determined not only grow well in our region, but offer other benefits like being low-water and wildlife-attracting! In a tucked-away corner of the UC Davis campus near Mrak Hall and The UC Davis Arboretum, there is a new garden plot with fresh mulch, thriving vegetable plants, young seedlings, and a small shed. Until this week, there were no signs on this mysterious plot. If you’re at UC Davis, you may have walked by and wondered, “What’s growing on over there?” This is the Horticulture Innovation Lab’s new center at ‪#‎UCDavis‬, an area to show visitors and curious campus neighbors a peek into the Horticulture Innovation Lab’s work and some of the tools we use in developing countries around the world. ‪

The #UCDavis campus has about 400 cork oaks. Most were planted as part of a World War II effort to help supply the #cork that was used to make life jackets back then.
