Part 4: A New Normal II 🌸
The next day, Shadaysha got up and did her morning routine. Once she showered, she grabbed jeans and a t-shirt to wear with sneakers since she'd be on her feet. She threw her hair up into a messy bun. Her look was now complete. Dynastie would be at home today since Dre was here. She grabbed her bag out of her closet. A text from Mina came through, letting her know she would be there soon.
Shadaysha walked out of the house and waited. Mina pulled up, and Shadaysha got in. "You look well rested," said Mina. Shadaysha took a deep breath and said, "I am, actually. I slept very well." Mina smiled and pulled into the parking lot of the diner. "Call me when you get off, and I'll come pick you up," said Mina.
Shadaysha agreed and walked into the diner where Jacob was waiting for her. "Welcome to your first day. We aren't that busy on Saturdays, so it'll be easier for you to catch on," said Jacob. Jacob showed Shadaysha around and introduced her to the small staff. He took his time and showed her how to manage the cash register and how to take orders from customers. When there were no customers, Jacob wanted to get to know Shadaysha. He asked her about the normal favorites just to break the ice and make her feel comfortable. There was a small party of people who came in. Jacob asked her if she wanted to do the register or wait on them.
"I'll go take their order," said Shadaysha, walking over to the family. She wrote down their order and sent it back to the cook. She filled their glasses with the drink of choice and brought it back to them. She let them know their food would be right out.
"You did great," said Jacob.
"Thank you," said Shadaysha, placing the food on a tray to bring it to their table. She told them if they needed anything to let her know.
Shadaysha walked back over to Jacob. "This is easy to learn." She leaned on the counter, smiling. Jacob noticed her smile and realized how beautiful it was. He thought it would be unprofessional to tell her, so he remained quiet.
Shadaysha's shift ended, and Mina was already outside. She was thankful for this, as she was exhausted. She didn't make a lot today, but she was closer to paying off Dre.
"So how did it go?" asked Mina, driving off down the road.
Shadaysha took a deep breath. "It was actually pretty easy to get the hang of." Shadaysha leaned into the seat and closed her eyes.
Soon Mina pulled up to the house. Shadaysha got out and bid her a goodnight. Shadaysha went to her room, stripped out of her clothes, and slid under the covers.
Shadaysha was never one to dream, but she found herself slipping into a dream.
Shadaysha went to work at the diner. She walked in, and Jacob greeted her as usual. She began doing her daily routine. Out of nowhere, Jacob came to stand beside her. He grabbed her hand and asked if she wanted to go for a walk.
"What about the diner?" said Shadaysha.
"Bron will hold it down," said Jacob
Shadaysha agreed. It was beautiful outside. The sun was shining. The birds were chirping, and the wind gently blew. Jacob was telling Shadaysha about a customer who came in that had a little too much to drink and thought he walked into Burger King.
"I kept telling him that it's not BK and he couldn't have it his way," said Jacob, laughing. Shadaysha laughed until she had tears in her eyes. A few slipped down her face. Jacob reached his thumb up and swiped them away. Shadaysha shivered from his touch.
"Honestly, I have been so blessed to have the chance to know you. I don't know how I became so lucky. The way you laugh at my jokes, the way you listen to what I have to say. I am in awe. From the first moment I saw your smile, I was hooked. Shadaysha couldn't believe what she was hearing. Jacob was pouring out his heart to her. Her heart rate speeds up just a little.
Shadaysha... Shadaysha...
Out of nowhere, Shadaysha is woken up out of her sleep by Dynastie.
Shadaysha didn't like being woken up out of the amazing dream she was having. Trying to mask her annoyance, she plastered on a smile and said, "Hey Dynastie, what's wrong?"
"I don't like being here with Daddy alone," said Dynastie.
This alarmed Shadaysha, and she sat straight up. Helping Dynastie on her bed, she pulled the blankets over her small frame.
"Why?" asked Shadaysha. She didn't like the funny feeling in the pit of her stomach.
"When you left, I wanted a snack, so I went to get one, and he yelled at me, saying that I couldn't have one because I didn't need any." said Dynastie. "He also made me stay in my room."
Shadaysha knew that Dre was a hardass, but Dynastie was just a toddler. How could you treat a child this way?
Shadaysha wrapped an arm around Dynastie. "Don't worry, I won't leave you here with him when I go to work."
Shadaysha and Dynastie both fall asleep soon after their conversation.
The sun was shining through the windows this particular Sunday morning. It had been almost two months since Shadaysha started working. The birds were chirping, and the air was cool. Shadaysha was in the kitchen fixing breakfast for her and Dynastie. Dre was not home, and she didn't know when he left. Setting the dishes on the table, Shadaysha turned to see Dre standing there.
She jumped due to not hearing him come in. "You scared me."
"What the fuck are you doing?" asked Dre.
"What? I was fixing breakfast for me and Dynastie," said Shadaysha.
"Oh, so you getting beside yourself, huh? Just making yourself at home. Walking around in them little bitty ass shorts like you own shit," said Dre.
Dre walked up to Shadaysha, grabbing a fistful of her hair. "You don't own shit. You don't run shit. I do," said Dre, running his hand down to her ass and squeezing it.
"Dad, stop, what are you doing? asked Shadaysha, trying to get out of his grasp.
"Nahh, don't run. You wanna be grown? Imma show you what it is to be grown," said Dre as he shoved his hand in Shadaysha's shorts, palming her ass. He took his free hand to slide her shorts down just enough to gain access. He kicked her legs apart as he undid the front of his pants, freeing his penis. He spit in his hand and rubbed her pussy to give it a slickness. He tried plunging into her, but he was too big, and she tightly closed her legs. As he was trying to fight her to get her legs back open, his phone rang. "This ain't over," said Dre, walking away.
Shadaysha ran to her bathroom and turned on the shower to the hottest setting she could stand. The breakfast was long forgotten. Shadaysha stepped in and tried scrubbing her skin off. She couldn't believe her father would do that to her. She slid down the shower wall and cried. She cried until there were no more tears left. She didn't know how long she cried. She lathered up and rinsed off. She put on jeans and an oversized t-shirt. When she came out of the bathroom, she helped Dynastie get dressed. Once finished, Shadaysha and Dynastie headed to the bus station so Shadaysha could go to work.
At the diner, Shadaysha found Jacob sitting in his office. She knocked on the door before she and Dynastie entered. Jacob looked up; Shadaysha saw something in the way Jacob looked at Dynastie, but she was unsure of what it meant because as fast as she saw it, it was gone.
"Hey Jacob, this is my sister Dynastie. She's not staying; I just have to call my friend to come pick her up." Shadaysha smiled nervously.
Jacob stood up and walked over to stand in front of Shadaysha and Dynastie. Kneeling down, he said, "Hello, Dynastie." He stood directly in front of Shadaysha. "I'm okay with that. Did you eat"? Shadaysha shook her head no. "Well, let's fix that. Can't have my staff hungry. Jacob went into the kitchen and whipped the girls up a quick lunch.
"Here you go, it's on the house," said Jacob, smiling as he set the plates down.
Shadaysha and Dynastie both said thank you.
As Dynastie finished eating, Shadaysha texted Mina to see if she could pick up Dynastie for a few hours. Mina agreed.
When Mina arrived, Shadaysha walked Dynastie outside. "Hey, Mina."
"Hey, why didn't you call me? I would have picked you up this morning," asked Mina.
"Dynastie and I had a rough start, so I just decided to catch a bus," said Shadaysha, looking out onto the busy highway.
"I get it. I am here if you ever need to talk," said Mina as she started the car.
"Thanks," said Shadaysha.
Walking back into the diner, Shadaysha began her duties. Jacob tried talking to her as he had been doing for the almost two months since she had started working for him. She seemed different today. Like she was lost in thought. It seemed that something was heavy on her mind.
"Shadaysha, come walk with me," said Jacob.
"I'm fine; I have to refill the dispensers," said Shadaysha, not giving Jacob eye contact.
Jacob walked up on one side of her and gently grabbed her hand. Shadaysha jumped and immediately started shaking. "Please don't," she said.
"What's wrong, Daysha? You can talk to me," said Jacob.
"Please don't make me," she whispered. Jacob pulled her into a hug and noticed Shadaysha was trembling in fear. He leaned down to her ear. "Let me walk you out of here. I see customers are coming in, and I don't want them to see you this way." Shadaysha agreed, and Jacob led her to the back and outside of the diner.
"I understand you not up to telling me what's wrong but just know I am always here whenever you need me, okay?" said Jacob.
Shadaysha and Jacob walked for a while, and when they returned, it was time for the dinner rush. Shadaysha got to work and never missed a beat. Jacob watched her from afar. Seeing her in action made him proud. He saw her in a new light. She was not only beautiful, but she was also smart and a hard worker. No matter how long it takes, Jacob wanted to be the peace in the middle of her storm.
