My brain “what’s that? You want to update ref sheets for art fight? You remember that thing you lost interest in like six years ago? Ya let’s do that instead!”
'llo!!! Answer at leisure but how is interspecies adoption handled in Artificial Stars? I assume most would try and find an adult of the same species first, but are there any conditions that would make them rear an alien youngling? How is it viewed in society? Idk im asking because i've had the idea of a Lolligo raised by Viridis floating around my head cause of the big big cultural clash those two have :]
Interspecies adoption isn’t something I’ve gave much thought into just yet but here is some info that I can give.
Viridis are eusocial, bipedal omnivores. They come in a range of green to gray colors with simple counter shading patterns with a hand full of exceptions. They have a layer of peach fuzz that has no particular purpose. This layer is usually not visible unless their skin is inches from your face. Their eyes appear black however on closer look is a dark green with a slightly lighter shade of green around the pupils.
The viridis live in clans that have strict hierarchy with workers making up most of the population. The matriarch is in charge of almost everything and is the only one that can have offspring normally. Since the matriarch can only have one youngling at a time she may give permission to higher ranking females to have offspring of their own. If the matriarch can no longer produce offspring she will still be in charge but will now have a second in command that takes on the reproductive duties and will be the next matriarch after the old one dies or steps down. Males that are not related to the matriarch may be given breeding rights but will still be part of the worker population and don't usually get special treatment.
A worker cannot leave their clan without the permission of their matriarch. Leaving their clan without permission may lead to the matriarch warning other clans of the possible danger they might be, lowering their chances of joining a new clan.
Viridis are very conservative with physical contact. Those outside of their clan can only touch the hands. Clan members can touch the arms up until the shoulders and even from the neck up depending heavily on how close the individuals are. Touching anywhere else is seen as a sexual advertisement. Although they very strict with physical contact there are exceptions. for example, medical care and child care. Child care is strictly a job for well trusted, permanent clan members.
Clothing is socially required and showing skin that isn’t the neck up and or the ends of their limbs is inappropriate.
Most of the water that is available on their home planet is mostly salt water. Because of this the viridis have an adaptation that allows them to sneeze out the salt.
Their teeth are two plates that constantly grows faster then they can naturally keep up with. Rock chewing helps keep their teeth at a healthy length. It’s important to keep their teeth at a certain length, if they are too long or short eating becomes really hard to do.
The voice box is much lower in their neck causing their voice to sound muffled.
Viridis have the ability to biologically change their sex (bidirectional hermaphrodite). It’s not something they do often.
Viridis are omnivores that prefer a mostly plant based diet. Meat consumption doesn’t happen often and in some cultures is forbidden.
