Hi!

Any ideas how to ask pronouns as a teacher?

I'm starting next semester and I want all students to feel welcome in my class. My idea was to say that if anyone had pronouns that didn't necessarily match their registered gender or wanted to be referred to with a different name than the one they registered with, they could send a private email or come see me at the end of the class (if we ever have live teaching this semester lol). I'm not sure of the formulation?

In any case, I don't think I'm going to ask each student directly because I feel like it's something students should only communicate if they're comfortable doing so. But then again, perhaps I should simply ask all students to email me with their name and proper pronouns, so as not to make a difference between students who do and students who don't? I don't want to out anyone either.

I'm also afraid that some ill-intentioned student might not take this seriously and send me emails with bullshit names, which wouldn't change much but would still be really sad... I feel like people in France are much less aware of the very existence of trans and nonbinary people, even though my students should be old enough to be involved (they should be about 19/20).

I have done my research on google and all but I haven't found anything quite satisfactory. I haven't seen anything on tumblr about a right way for professors to ask. Sorry if this question has already been answered to, I know trans and nonbinary people are not here to educate the rest of the world but I haven't found a solution for this specific situation for now. I did find a great example of a form that was distributed in class but again, I'm probably not going to teach live at all next semester. Cis people can answer too if they have a good example of teachers asking for pronouns.

I'll reblog with the solution I've found so that other teachers and professors with the same question find an answer without bothering anyone.

Alright ! Following up on this post and thanks to the very helpful answers I've had on this post, I've decided to ask students to send me an email with their contact information, name and pronouns among other things that they would like me to know, so that it's a bit more private than saying them in front of the class and I have time to write them down (there are 34 of them per group!!!).

Thank you again for your answers, you were allreally helpful! Now I'll have my first class on January 20 with both groups, so I'll reblog with how it went!!!

UPDATE: My students got me crying in the club, but in a good way

Some students filled in the private survey I was telling you about in the previous reblogs, and it is useful. Students actually needed this, and some of them included a thank you note for respecting trans rights and gender identities, as well as their level of comfort with using pronouns in public or in private.

THE TEMPORARY CONCLUSION TO THIS POST (I’ll reblog if there’s an update and someone tells me it’s not a good solution):

DO THIS. In a position of authority, especially as a teacher, ask your students their pronouns and the contexts in which you should use them in a private survey of which only you can see the answers (again, check the notes in case a trans or nonbinary person tells me it’s disrespectful or inadequate). Make a trans or non binary person happy. It’s a very basic, simple, non-bothersome thing to do.

Hating on terfs and bigots shouldn’t be at the core of your allyship. Take the necessary steps to make the space around you inclusive for trans and non binary people.

I was really touched by my students’ answers. But this is only the most basic of steps towards inclusivity, and what their enthusiasm tells me is that even the most basic level of respect is generally not met. We need to do better.

Hellllooo this is my very first attempt at animation AND pixel art please be kind. I made it with Procreate for my RPG Maker MV project. It will be part of a battler sprite for a bulb-like monster that appears alongside a carnivorous plant. This three-frame animation is for attacking. I wanted to use one of Hiddenone’s amazing sprites but I couldn’t find what I wanted. Do check their resources because they’re great!!!

I just found out about the timelapse function in Procreate, makes one feel like a pro

This is the battler look for the main character in my RPGMV project, so I would really appreciate if you didn’t reuse or repost, since I’m just doing it on my own and it takes a lot of time to do it all by myself.

In any case, I don’t know when I’ll be finished with my project but I’ll be sure to tell you guys and to share if it ever goes on Steam!

Chichi and Goku struggle to find a proper teacher for Gohan due to lack of money, so Goku tries to think of the cleverest person he knows... Bulma is off the table since she lives too far away, so he asks Piccolo, who of course accepts

Piccolo doesn’t understand how humans write maths, but figures it out in one day spent at the library

Chi Chi is worried at first and checks on them from time to time, but then ends up trusting him, after Goku told her he knows Piccolo too well to doubt that he’ll be the best teacher there ever could be for his son

Also Piccolo has to dress normally to not attract suspicion from the neighbours but ends up getting used to it, not even noticing after a while
