So, a little while ago I posted a picture of a semi completed mold, This is what that mold became, a hammer head cast in copper, not a usual material for a hammer to be cast in, however I was interested in the affect that heating and cooling has on copper.
This process is called annealing where copper is heated to an almost red hot heat and cooled in a bucket of water, this causes the atoms in the copper to expand away from each other making it much more malleable.
However as the copper is agitated (by repeated striking of a hammer for example) the atoms start to contract and tighten up making the copper harde3r and harder and it must be re-annealed
So by doing this to the hammer head the idea is to create a tool that becomes stronger and more effective in its purpose the more it is used.
