2 Concerns & 2 Aspects
The two concerns I have about my project are the citing and the style of my brochure. I am concerned of my audience disliking my style of the brochure and concerned if I included the citation correctly. The two aspects of my genre project that I think I have done well is the information I provided and the arrangement that I did with the information. I think that I have organized my information correctly so that my audience can understand it.
"Using Sources Ethically"
My thoughts and reactions in the article "Using Sources Ethically," is that it is very helpful in following all the strategies. I believe that its very important to give credit when using work from someone else. I think that it is also very important to look for details and a good style for your work to be more productive. Most importantly, I think that keeping your goal and your time effectively is also important as practicing regularly so that your work can turn into a success. This is relevant to my genre project because I will need to use my time effectively so that I will not have to ask questions on how to do my project or how to finish it. I will need to keep my goals straight and focus on the details of my project like punctuation and carefully giving credit so that I can have a good style. All these great strategies will help me produce a great genre project by utilizing them correctly to help strengthen my project.

Revisions
While reading through two different ideas and strategies, I came to a conclusion that both King and Sommers don't really have the same concerns about revision. Even though they both have interesting ideas about revision, they both share interesting feedback over the concept of revision. They share different ideas because King focuses more on the perfection of the writing process. If there is mistakes or paragraphs that are not interesting to the audience, then for King, they need to be corrected or removed from the story so that the audience can enjoy his story better. On the other hand, Sommers' opinion is different because she focuses more on providing information to the audience. The difference between King and Sommers, is that Sommers focuses more on informing rather than make the story enjoying for the audience. Overall, Sommers is interested in bringing new information and ideas, than focusing on making the story perfect.
1. What I enjoyed the most about King's discussion is the strategies he uses to make his stories interesting with a sense of humor to enjoy. I like fact that he wants his audience to enjoy a good story. For me, this means that he cares for his audience's opinions and enjoyment.
2. The advice that makes sense to me is to let go of your writing for a while or let it aside for a moment and then come back to it. If you set some time away from your writing, then when you come back to it, you can more easily spot your mistakes and where corrections need to be made for a better story.
3. The advice I would not like to follow would be to write numerous drafts. I would be ok with two or three drafts the most. The reason I disagree with this advice is because I like to correct my mistakes while writing my first draft. I also disagree because personally, I like to get help and feedback from others to write a better draft. I think that a little help makes a difference when writing or doing anything else.

Discourse Community Ethnography
My discourse community works with college students to help them make healthy choices about their health. They are the Campus Health Center for New Mexico State University. The Campus Health Center treats patients in a safe competent manner on a consistent basis. They try to provide patients the same care whether it is a different nurse taking care of the patient for the next visit. They always follow safety, privacy and health guidelines when working in the clinic. The nurses in the Campus Health Center are here for us college students and staff to help us make good choices and learn new ways and skills to survive the college life in a safe and healthy way.
I chose this discourse community because I was very interested in learning how a health center worked in a college. I wanted to see how they wrote and how they communicated with other co-workers and patients. I also wanted to observe and get a sense of what they do and use when working with patients. I wanted to experience the feeling of just being there and observing and in some way feel part of this discourse community as well. From this study I am hoping of learning more about it so that I can tell others who are interested in knowing what it is about. I am hoping to gain more knowledge and experience of how they work to be prepared and have an idea for my future. I want to provide the public with information that can be beneficial for them. If people need to get a quick check from a nurse, then they can simply go to the Campus Health Center where they can be attended and provided with good analysis, advices and choices. The only way the public will be informed about this beneficial clinic, is if they know about it and are given information to learn and become interested in visiting the clinic.
I gathered all of my findings by visiting the Campus Health Center and asking politely if I could interview a nurse working in this clinic. My interview and my observations both took place in the same day of March 31, 2014 and in the same place which was in the Campus Health Center clinic. I interviewed Carole Nevarez, a nurse supervisor in the clinic, and our interview took place inside an empty patient room. I got to observe for a short amount of time, a male nurse who was attending a patient inside a room. The materials I collected for my analysis were examples of translated medications or analysis in different languages like English to Japanese language so that all the diverse public in college can feel more confident in understanding their health problems. I also collected different brochures about healthy eating, healthy relationships, about stress, skin cancer, social work services for students, and magazines and sheets of information and facts about health.
The shared goals of the Campus Health Center community are to treat patients in a safe and competent manner on a consistent basis while working. Their goal is to provide the same care to any patient whether the nurse is a different person on your next visit to the clinic. They want their patients to feel the same confidence and comfort around any nurse working in the clinic. This community follows safety, privacy and health guidelines at all times for their patients. Overall, this community is here to provide the patients with good choice making, and information of how to survive college life in a safe and healthy manner. They are here to become a friend that you can rely on when you need help or an advice of being healthy or succeeding in college.
The mechanisms that the members in this community use to communicate with each other are electronically and verbally. According to Carole Nevarez, ten nurses in the clinic work under her supervision. She interacts with them through administrative work where they are assigned a provider. The nurses then work one on one with Carole Nevarez by reporting patients’ information to her and other nurses working with the same patient. Swales confirmed that “public goals may be formally inscribed in documents” (472). The goals of the Campus Health Center clinic are provided to patients when they are being evaluated because their information is kept confidential and is only shared among nurses that are working with the same patient. The nurses in this community have to report off the patient’s MEDICAT, which is a sheet with the patient’s personal information and vital signs. In the clinic, they electronically communicate to write and send a report about the patients to other nurses and the supervisor. To evaluate the patient, they electronically pull a chart of the patient’s information and go from there.
To communicate with patients, this discourse community tries not to use to much medical terminology. They stay away from medical terminology and communicate with their patients using more simple and common words that they can be able to understand. Swales stated that the majority of all discourse communities use “specialized terminology [that] is realized through the development of community-specific abbreviations and acronyms” (473). The Campus Health Center also uses Google translate to interpret something into the patient’s language for better understanding of the material. They use information sheets that are translated into different languages like Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, and more, so that the patients feel more comfortable in better understanding and to keep the diverse community feeling confident in visiting the clinic. The abbreviations and acronyms with specialized terminology is only used among each nurse working in the clinic where is later translated into a better understanding way to the patient.
The purpose of using technical data to evaluate a patient is to make the work easier and faster. The technology is very reliable for the nurses who work in the clinic because they can quickly pull up the sheet of information of patients from the computer and directly evaluate the patients instead of looking through every patient’s profile folder manually. The purpose of communicating electronically is to decrease errors. If there is no communication through email or checking patient’s information right, there could be chances of providing the patient with wrong dosage or medication. Misunderstanding and errors can occur, if the material and information is not included or typed in correctly for the patient. These goals of communication exist in this diverse community because the nurses want to be a helping hand to the patients, by caring for them, teaching and advising them to be successful and make healthy choices. They want to stay on the best interest of the patient.
During a conversation, this community uses medical terminology when speaking about a health problem or issue. They also use common codes when working. According to Carole Nevarez, they use codes like overhead code blue means to drop what you are doing and help the patient calling for help immediately, code red means fire, and code Dr. Strong means that there is a violent patient and to call 911, these are common codes that they use frequently in the clinic. This communication and codes help the nurses and the staff in an emergency situation. The most frequent code that is the most helpful and common is “code red because patients have to be evacuated and protected safely” out of danger (Nevarez).
The newcomers in this discourse community “go through orientation their first week, they have to go through a check list [that checks off their ability to know how to do CPR and vital signs], annual training is required as part of their job, mock code, and basically do a training refresher for newcomers and others that have been working already in the clinic” (Nevarez). Annual training and mock code is to refresh previous nurses that have already been working in the clinic and keep them up to date on how to perform different skills. The Campus Health Center community is characterized by the “survival of the community [that] depends on a reasonable ratio between novices and experts” (Swales 473). Novices and experts are characterized in this discourse community because they want to focus on the good wellbeing of the patients by providing them with nurses that understand the skills well and are able to provide the patients with good productive care. The Campus Health Center wants their nurses and staff to be prepared and up to date for the patient’s safety. Carole Nevarez says that this career is not always the same like a routine; it is always different every single day, which is why she enjoys her career. She also says that there is always a surprise and that she is always learning something new while working.
The things Carole Nevarez dislikes about her career are things like personal issues that cannot be resolved during work and cannot be talked or discussed while working. She also says that it is very hard to please everyone. Most of the time there is always conflict between the nurses and the staff about not getting along with each other. This is where Carole Nevarez has to step in and make an arrangement between them to understand their problem and differences and make it easier for them to get along with each other. This career seemed “very interesting” to Carole Nevarez, a woman that comes from a background of restaurant owners and workers. She was very interested in the nursing field and wanted to learn and know more about it. She also has a degree in business administration, and there for the business with nursing seemed very interesting to her. She loves and enjoys her job with the fact that it is never the same and she is never under any routine that she has to follow every day.
The advice from Carole Nevarez to all the people who are interested in going into her profession is to make sure you want to go in the nursing field because you truly enjoy it and love helping and caring for people, and to make sure you are not in just because of the business and money making. You have to really love working around diversity patients who need medical assistance because if you don’t, then you will be unhappy with your career and it will not work out that nicely as you hoped it would. Overall, to accomplish your dream of working as a nurse and assisting patients with care, you have to study and always do your best to accomplish your goals and be successful.
Therefore, I have learned very valuable information that I know will help me greatly in my future goals and career. I have experienced how nurses work around patients and other co-workers in their discourse community. I have learned basic and common codes that they use to communicate with each other and the medical terminology they disregard using around their patients. I have learned that they use a chart on the computer electronically to evaluate a patient and communicate with other nurses around them. I also understand that they communicate verbally as well. This knowledge that I have gained from the Campus Health Center has helped me better understand what it’s like to be a member of this discourse community. I understand that you have to be professional and conscious of using words that the patients you are evaluating are able to understand clearly. I have also understand that in order to be successful in this discourse community, you have to love caring for patients and dedicating your time and support so that the patients can succeed by making good healthy choices.

My Discourse Community Matters
What I include in my field notes and interview matters greatly because I am able to learn more of what exactly they do and how they do their work or job. I also get to inform others that want to understand my discourse community with good information and sources. My discourse community helps us college students succeed in our college life by providing health care to us and teaching us about making healthy choices. I believe that by observing and asking questions, anyone can learn and get a clear idea of what is expected if you would like to go into any career. By providing information that is beneficial to everyone really matters and is beneficial, if you see good changes happening throughout your community, then all this is worth it and matters.

I interviewed and observed Carole Nevarez, a nurse supervisor here in the Campus Health Center at NMSU.
The interview questions were the following:
1. What is your name and title?

Misery
My reaction to the movie was really intense on how Annie started screaming all of the sudden and hit Paul on his injured legs. When Annie transformed into a mean woman, it kind of scared me too as well as Paul. The most interesting and intense scene that I thought was pretty nice, was when Paul tried to open and unlock the door to run away and Annie almost caught him out of his room/jail. Overall, I think the movie is great and intense with the characters and where the movie takes place almost in the middle of no where makes it even better.
The stereotypes of this movie are probably how the writer did not make copies of his written work and I also think that all writers should be in a city or a place where someone else can watch over them so that other people like Annie don't trap them and make them suffer.

Dancing as Leadership - discourse community
In this video they are dancing for therapy and for themselves as a hobby. Through dancing, people can express their feelings and emotions and build community by meeting other people and creating trust and confidence between themselves and other persons. This video is communicating its language to all the people in general, informing them of how you can become a leader by dancing. The language is translated to all the public who like to dance or enjoy watching people perform.
Autoethnography
I started writing when I was four years old as I attended pre-school. One of the persons who helped me develop this skill was my mother. I remember that the majority of my classmates already knew how to write their names and I felt impotent with the idea of not knowing how to write my own name. I was brave enough to ask my mother to teach me how to learn to write, and she had the patience to teach me as she held my hand in hers while holding the pencil to write. My mother was not the only person who helped me learn how to write, it was also my teachers from elementary all the way through high school. In my writing from today, I have a tendency to repeat myself as I am writing. I frequently comment on my own work like if there was another person, when there is really nobody else but me. I also have a tendency to comment on my work to help me be aware of what I am writing is prudent and understandable to my audience.
My writing process is not the best skill I have. As I was writing my prompt, I noticed that I have a large number of different things going on my mind while writing. Some of the things that I think of or that I get distracted by, are things such as “what am I doing” or “why am I doing it this way and not this other way.” I tend to correct myself as I am writing. Every little mistake that I do, I go back and correct it. Sometimes this process that I follow tends to frustrate me, but this is how I am able to write a paper that I think will be good to read. I try to be a perfectionist as I am writing because this is how I believe my paper will be prudent and legible to my audience. I believe that my writing process is in the middle or at least average for college-level writing. To produce a good paper, I have to make sure I am using words that make sense for my professors or any one reading what I have to say. As a college-level student I frequently go back and re read over and over various times sentence by sentence, to make sure it is understandable. I believe that going back and proofreading it various times, make a paper more effective to me.
Throughout my prompt I went through various steps such as re reading the question over and over until I had an idea of what to write about. I repeated myself frequently as I was recording and writing at the same time. I re read various paragraphs and sentences to make sure I understood what I was writing about so that others would understand it as well. All this steps I took made me realize what my writing process was in more detail. I always thought what my writing process was, but I never realized or actually took time to consider all the steps I take while writing. When I write, I have to think for a moment of who my audience is to use proper words. For example, if my audience is a president of some organization or committee or anything important, I have to take in consideration the language that I have to use to sound professional. For every formal paper I frequently check the words that are accurate and appropriate to use, not only for a formal paper, but for any other writing, I have a tendency to think of good word choice to use.
In my prompt and recording, I noticed that I was successful in simply coming up with ideas without having to do any out line or brainstorm. It was all do to having the time and the dedication to write what I had to say. I also noticed that I am successful in organizing my thoughts of the topic as I am writing. I have encountered myself with things that make me a successful writer and with things that do not make me that writer that I imagined I was. Problems that I found difficult as I was writing my prompt were focusing only on one thing. I noticed that I am not able focus on only one thing, because as I am thinking, I bring out more and more topics and different ideas that can be related in some way to what I am writing or not. I also have a problem when re reading my work, because while I read, I believe that the correct words are already there when they are not. In my writing process, having ideas already there as I am writing helps me be more effective. My writing process helps me understand the things that I am doing right and wrong, and what I can do to make them better.
In my writing, I have said things against me that affected me while writing but made me write even better. As I was recording, I said things like “do it right or don’t do it at all” or “u just can’t do it.” These words made me angry and at the same time made me try and write even better to prove wrong these phrases. As a writer I talked to myself with words that made me angry and with words that raised my self-esteem like “you can do it” or “you did a great job,” simple phrases that helped me write more effective. This processes that I am doing while writing, are helping me grow more as a writer and develop more ways that I can improve my writing. My writing process is challenging me to correct mistakes that don’t help me in my writing process and create new ways that will increase the effectiveness of a more productive writing process for my own benefit. In other words, it is making me realize that I can write better if I put my mind to it and ignore or erase all the negative problems, to have a more useful writing process.
I believe that more positive changes in my writing process will help me become a stronger writer. Simple things that can help me are the comments that I say to myself. While I am writing, I can think of more positive comments to say to myself and more feedback that I can provide to myself to become an effective writer. This process of writing has helped me see where I need to improve and has helped me understand how my own writing process works. This process has made me understand why we recorded ourselves and why we were coding our writing. The recording helped me see all the things that distract me from writing and all the things that come up in my mind while writing. The coding as well helped me see the things that I repeated or said in the recording while writing the transcription.
Overall, I think that my writing process is relevant to other college-level students. I believe that all students at some point repeat or even fix every little error when writing. My writing process is not different from others, but it has helped me understand many things about my writing that I didn’t realize before. It has also helped me develop better methods and strategies to grow as a writer and improve my writing skills.
Metacommentary
I believe that my autoethnography has some sort of metacommentary in it. In my paper I tend to repeat words that I say in my mind while writing like, "ok I" or "therefore I." I also tend to comment on what I just said like, "this is how I" or "so that's why I," and so on. Overall, throughout my paper I frequently comment on my own comments to help me listen to myself and be aware if I am properly being justifiable and clear to my audience when they read my writing. I believe that I do this commenting on myself to see if I understand it, if so then other people will understand it as well.
