Thailand Tourism –some myths you should ignore
‘The land of smiles’, Thailand is often one of the first international destinations on the list of a first-time foreign traveller. Most tourists, who arrive in Thailand with their big bags, also arrive with many misconceptions. Thailand’s free spirit has earned it the moniker of being the ‘Disneyland for adults’. But this is just one of the many misconceptions about this wonderful city. Here are some myths you should ignore before you embark on your Thailand tour.
Thailand is dirt cheap: Sorry if this bursts your bubble, but the Thailand of the 90’s where you could spend only a few Thai Bahts on a luxurious hotel is long gone. If you want cheap options you have to compromise on the quality. Most tourists plan Thailand packages on an unreasonable budget and are stumped when prices are high and the budget goes awry.
Everyone is interested in scamming you: Because you land in Thailand with the preconceived notion that Thailand is cheap, you start believing that scamming is the national past-time. We’re not saying that you won’t meet scam artists, but if you visit the major tourist zones in Thailand, you’ll find the people to be warm and welcoming. They will even guide you on how and what to spend on.
Thailand is not kid-friendly: Most adults, who book Thailand tour packages, exclude their kids out of it, whereas is reality, Thailand is a great place for fantastic family adventures. The country is home to exciting amusement parks, water parks, zoos and museums, making it so much more than your average adult destination.
Thailand is not safe for solo travellers: This is yet another myth that needs to be busted, for Thailand is perfect for solo adventures. It is a friendly country where you can get around easily. English is widely spoken, people are helpful and friendly and they’ll guide you when you’re confused. If you are sceptical (revisiting the idea of scam-artistes), you can always take multiple opinions about prices and safety measures, while staying alert.
You must spend a lot of money on tips: One of the things to be well versed with on your trip to Thailand is the tipping culture of the country. Fortunately for you, Thailand does not have a strong tipping culture. You need not tip your taxi drivers, restaurant servers or even your hotel bell-boy. Tipping in Thailand is more about gratitude than obligation and no one will be offended if you don’t.
