“I still don’t know who you are…—I guess what I mean is, how do you know about super natural stuff? Like, bakenekos.”
"Ah, well... I'm a detective for the non-human, among other things. Maybe a mediator's the right term, or a counselor--you ever heard the marriage problems between a rain spirit and a fire demon? Lemme tell you now: it ain't worth listenin' to."
Kasumi steps aside so Basilio can enter. It’s a small apartment—basically a sagging sofa and tv with a kitchen attached and a bedroom off in the back. It’s served Kasumi well for the year or so he’s been in this city. Basilio is his only regular visitor. Kasumi’s human friends usually aren’t close enough for house calls.
"Do you want any non-hypothetical booze?" he asks, making automatically for the refrigerator in the kitchenette. "It’s not a celebration… and all I have is beer… but hey, it’s something. Hospitality." He makes a vague hand gesture. "I’m a great host, see?"
He’s hiding his disappointment under joviality. The day Basilio finds his master is the day Kasumi might finally understand his Purpose and the circumstances of his “birth.” It’s both a tantalizing and a terrifying prospect. Of course, the wizard would also be executed and Kasumi isn’t sure how to feel about that.
"A greater host would have a roast pig out on their coffee table," Basilio says off-handedly. It's no insult, really--just a light tease in an attempt to keep himself from thinking too deeply about the fact he failed, again. "Which has happened, once. When I visited this family of pixies. You don't fuckin' expect a pixie to slaughter a pig and roast it for ya, but..."
He rambles for a bit as he takes his shoes off and puts them out to the side just to fill what might be an otherwise awkward silence. Collapsing onto the sofa, he sighs and closes his eyes. He hopes the young man doesn't mind too much that Basilio's scent's going to rub off on the cushions--and that that scent is peanut butter-y.
It's been a long day.
"Hey, I'm sorry." The casual tone of his voice kind of takes away from the genuine nature of the apoogy, maybe, but Basilio keeps his gaze up towards the ceiling. "That I haven't found the guy yet. But you bet your ass I'll take him here when I do so you can punch him in the face yourself."
"Hm…"
Jarvinia scrutinized him carefully, slightly surprised by the question. Her gaze shifted to the corpse at her feet, severely mutilated by the daggers she held.
"For this one, yes. The contractor was a human. Why do you ask?"
"Because there's a guy I'm lookin' for who hires folks like you." Basilio shoves his hands into his pockets. "I don't know if you've heard of him on the vine, but he calls himself Linti. Typically picks wolves to do his work and pays a hell of a lot."
He cocks his head to the side, as if trying to remember the details he should be remembering. "Mm... an' he smells a lot like grilled meat."
Kasumi laughed. Or perhaps it would be more apt to say Ichor laughed. It was funny, but around the detective, Kasumi didn’t mind being inhuman quite so much. Perhaps it was because of Basilio’s utterly blase attitude about it, as if he’d seen far stranger things in the world. It was a comforting thought—that there were always far stranger things than you. It was why Kasumi didn’t mind Basilio’s visits, even if they were somewhat like work at the heart of it.
"Maybe I will one of these days," Kasumi said brightly. "Speaking of kicking in faces, I take it you haven’t found my wizard and kicked him yet have you?” It was a joking question, but Kasumi always asked in some shape or form when Basilio dropped by, just to make sure.
A frown appears on Basilio's face, and he mumbles something under his breath that sounds a lot like 'no', except he's tacked a couple extra curse words in his frustration. Among strangers, Basilio's calm. Cheery, almost, with just a side of smug. Kasumi, however, knows how pissed Basilio's liable to get when his MIA master is brought up. Mostly because Basilio can't believe he can't find the damn bastard.
He made an Ichor, for Christ's sake. Basilio should be taking him to get executed before the council. Too bad he can't fucking find him.
"You know if I found the guy I'd be comin' here with booze to celebrate," he grumbles, and then he peers over Kasumi's shoulder. "You gonna let me in, or do I have to freeze out here all night?"
“Mm… A little over 8 years.— I guess I’ve had a lot of practice, but you never answered my question. Who are you, stranger? And how do you know about bakenekos?”
"I'm Basilio." Cue a little salute with his index and middle. "An' you ain't the first bakeneko I've met."
"More or less. My friends still think I’m human. My landlord still thinks I’m subhuman, but he thinks that of everybody. Pretty normal week."
"Landlord's all human, right? You can kick him in the face. I don't care."
Basilio still hasn't found his master--which is obvious, really. He hates himself for his inability to do just that. All these supernatural creatures on his side, at his beck and call, and he can't find one lousy wizard. It pisses him off. But at the same time, it's not like he hates Kasumi, either--even if he never calls him by name.
"Assholes like that deserve it."
”Trying t get on my good side are you? —Well, I suppose that it’s pretty impressive… But I can’t just shipshape all willy-nilly.”
"I gathered as much."
"But that you're able to hold this form for as long as you do is a good enough feat in itself." His lips twitch slightly. "How long've you been wearin' a human form, bakeneko?"
A predatory gaze was aimed towards the male, a smirk forming as she licked her lips.
“I am aware. It’s not any fun if you try to be clean about it.”
"I figured."
Basilio remembers it all too well: what it was like to kill, how all those emotions had deliciously fueled him. This one hits almost too close to home. "You employed by humans?"
bloodofstone
"You been behavin' while I was gone, Ichor?"
starter call! i have some new followers, so hey! like for a starter!
for those who aren’t aware, basilio’s a demigod (son of the filipino war god apolaki) detective who mediates conflicts in the supernatural/fantastical community. he feeds off of passionate emotion like anger or intense happiness or sex or what have you, and he really digs rice and noodles. like a lot.
let me know if you want a prose starter, otherwise i’ll make a short one!
"That’s just the least I can do for spilling coffee to you." she replied, but then she gave his words for a thought.Several minutes has passed and she ended giving him a solution.
"Then how about going to my house? I’ll wash your clothes there."
"You sure you can invite a grown man to your house without it lookin' weird?"
"Don't wanna inconvenience your parents or nothin'."
”And you’re pro… handsome for a… man?” Smooth comeback. "Just who are you?"
"Curious, I guess." He's at least honest as far as that's concerned. "Must be powerful to hold a human form like that for so long, huh?"
❝How can it be so personal? You already know the basics of the story. But fine… I think I already know what you want to know… About the apple… I was tricked.❞
"Tricked."
"Now, see, it's anyone's business whether or not you'd be bitter about the whole trick thing." His lips twitch in interest, and he shoves his hands into his pockets. "You're here though, huh. Alive an' all. See, that--is what I'm most curious 'bout."
"…You’re not gonna budge no matter how much I try to stop you, are you?" An exasperated sigh escapes from her lips. Is this how her friends feel whenever she’s too stubborn to change her opinion? (Well, that same stubbornness helped win their games. So in all honesty, they should be glad for that.)
She stares at the guy for moment, trying to figure out a solution. This is a real pan in the ass; But it’ll be even more trouble if he winds up getting hurt or something. "Y’know what? How about I just come along with you to make sure you don’t get into trouble?" At least she had her powers to help keep them safe.
Somehow Basilio saw that coming, but rather than show how frustrating it is to have an additional person on the team, he allows himself a brief twitch of his lips before dipping his head graciously. "Why the hell not?" he teases, shoving his hands into his pockets before starting on his walk.
The hallways are blissfully empty, which he supposes must be some kind of perk to coming onto campus after class hours. If one kid is as fussy as the girl behind him is, then he can't hope to imagine what it'd be like to have two.
"I figure I could use a witch on my side," he finally mentions, sounding chipper as hell. "I mean--that's what you are, aren't you?"
Looking over his shoulder, Basilio grins, though the gesture doesn't quite reach his eyes besides in the barest sparkle. "My mentor was a warlock."
"Is that so? Because I’m sure that they wouldn’t send me here if it wasn’t for the supernatural stuff that’s going on. Would they?” For goodness sakes, she was a kumiho, and one of her friends back home was a spirit medium. There was nothing else that could be weirder than that!
Basilio doesn't like her already.
"I'm dealing with a species that values their privacy, kumiho." Typically amicable, Basilio can't revert to an exasperated tone of voice no matter how much he wants to. Not while he's on the job, anyway. "It's a family matter, and so within the family it will stay. That's what the clan head told me specifically."
