— Theodore Roethke, from “Straw for the fire.”
Paul Celan, tr. by Patrick Cotter, from Selected Poems; “Crowned Out,” c. 1967
To fall for someone is to wildly jump into unknown darkness. Not knowing where you will land. How long you will fall. Whether you will survive the bruises.
Noor Shirazie (via noorshirazie)
Be softer with you. You are a breathing thing. A memory to someone. A home to a life.
Nayyirah Waheed (via lifeisnotalollipop)
I let it go. It’s like swimming against the current. It exhausts you. After a while, whoever you are, you just have to let go, and the river brings you home.
Joanne Harris, Five Quarters of the Orange (via p1ants)
I refuse to believe that our love was ordinary. Every second that my fingers were interlocked with yours felt like the ocean must feel when there’s a storm. Somewhere on Venus there are poems about the way we held hands. Somewhere in a galaxy close by there are stars named after the way we looked at each other. Somewhere there are wars with our names. You and I were never ordinary, but we were never okay, either.
The last of them, Scarlette La Vaillante (via scarlettethewriter-blog)
I know it must frustrate you to hear me doubt the good things you see in me, but low self esteem is like an incurable disease; it’s yet another sickness I live with and fight against and there are bad days and there are better ones, but never is there a day when the whispering voice falls silent and simply lets me be. You look at me like I’m the most beautiful thing you can imagine and I have to fight with myself not to shrink back and hide because if you’re looking at me that intently then you must be seeing the droopy eye lid leftover from my eye surgeries or the fat under my chin from the way my jawbone sits further back than it used to or how awful I look with my hair pulled back and nothing to hide behind. These are just some of the demons I have fought and I need you to know that I am still fighting them so please don’t think less of me for my weakness and please don’t think it’s you I doubt (it’s me - it’s always me). I want to see myself the way you see me, and sometimes I really do. Please don’t ever stop thinking I’m beautiful, even if I still try to hide from the weight of the word. I’ll get stronger, I promise.
T.K.A., i’m a mess, but i’m your mess, 9/30/14 (via noorshirazie)
He knew why he wanted to kiss her. Because she was beautiful. And before that, because she was kind. And before that, because she was smart and funny. Because she was exactly the right kind of smart and funny. Because he could imagine taking a long trip with her without ever getting bored. Because whenever he saw something new and interesting, or new and ridiculous, he always wondered what she’d have to say about it—how many stars she’d give it and why.

Marry your best friend. I do not say that lightly. Really, truly find the strongest, happiest friendship in the person you fall in love with. Someone who speaks highly of you. Someone you can laugh with. The kind of laughs that make your belly ache, and your nose snort. The embarrassing, earnest, healing kind of laughs. Wit is important. Life is too short not to love someone who lets you be a fool with them. Make sure they are somebody who lets you cry, too. Despair will come. Find someone that you want to be there with you through those times. Most importantly, marry the one that makes passion, love, and madness combine and course through you. A love that will never dilute - even when the waters get deep, and dark.
N’Tima (via wordsthat-speak)
You do not need to sit in a church, mosque, nor temple to talk to God. Similarly, I do not need to be in your presence to make conversation with you. There is the ultimate satisfaction of knowing I have prayed for you as sincerely and as often as possible, praying you find safety, love, and the essence of life itself. I hope you learn of my prayers only by their fulfillment.
Noor Shirazie (via noorshirazie)
“We have, each of us, nothing. We will give it to each other.”
— Carolyn Forché, from “For the Stranger”
I want to be the one who knows the best way to love you
Virginia Woolf was right when she said that love is the stupidest, most barbaric human passion

I would rather have your fingerprints all over my heart than a heart that does not know of your touch.

“I am hard on myself. But isn’t it better to be honest about these things before someone else can use them against you? Before someone else can break your heart? Isn’t it better to break it yourself?” - Stephanie Perkins, Isla and the Happily Ever After
Our fairytale needs no happy ending. I am more than content with here and now, as long as I can begin and end each day with you.
Noor Shirazie (via noorshirazie)
