Of all her siblings, Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna was closest to Michael or “Misha” as she and her family preferred to call him. Michael was raised in the company of his younger sister who also frequently nicknamed him “Floppy” because he “flopped” into chairs. They spent hours running and playing from room to room and through the vast halls of the palace lined with priceless vases. On 13 June 1918 while celebrating her thirty-sixth birthday, unknown to her, Olga’s childhood confidant and brother had been assassinated near Perm, the first of the Romanovs to perish in the Bolsheviks’ hands.
