The Calvosa’s and Maradei’s have always hated each other. The Calvosa family was the family that practically ran the catholic church, while the Maradei's were the top donors for the christian church. Of course, this caused problems. The two families were at each other's throats, always trying to prove their religion was superior to the others.
Oleander was finally the age where he was expected to marry. Luckily, his parents hadn't been the type to rush his marriage, wanting him to marry someone he loved. However; It seems that he had put it off for too long. His parents had set him up with a woman named Eleanor. They had met at one of those mundane parties his parents threw to hopefully set him up with a wealthy woman. He entertained her, smiling whenever she made jokes, and holding her hand. It was a tiring act, however, that same night he met someone that actually caught his eye. Luckily for him, the feeling was mutual. The two had shared a kiss, one that would send their parents into cardiac arrest if they found out. When he had sent one of his servants out to get the man's name, only to find out his name was Apollo Maradei, the only living son of the Maradei family.
Oleander wanted to forget about Apollo, he couldn’t be with him no matter what. Being with the son of a rival family would cause trouble, especially because they were both men. Even if their families solved their rivalries, they couldn’t be together. They would be arrested if word got out. Their own parents would likely report them, and he would practically ruin their reputation.
The last he had seen of Apollo was him running into the Calvosa’s family garden, vomiting into a flower bed of poppies. Oleander sat in his sleeping quarters, brushing out his hair before he went to bed. Images of Apollo plagued his mind. No matter how much he tried, he couldn’t banish them. He stepped onto the balcony connected to his room and looked up to the sky, hoping God would send him some sort of message.
Apollo had gotten incredibly drunk at the party, and had to leave early. However, he didn’t leave The Calvosa's family manor. He took a couple laps around the property before climbing the stone wall blocking the house off from people like him. He fell onto the stone pathway of the garden, hitting his head so hard he bled. His cousins had been chasing him, trying to stop him from humiliating himself.
“My! Apollo, You must come back! The Calvosa guards will have your head on a stick if they catch you!” his oldest cousin yelled, “Ay cousin! This foolish boy is not worth your life. Think of your real love! Your wife-to-be sits at home, eagerly waiting for your arrival, not knowing that you are in search of another man!” The other yelled. No matter how much they tried to reason, Apollo would not give up.“You imbeciles do not get it! Florence is not my true love! What I feel for Oleander is real!” He yelled, running far enough into the garden for them to give up. He looked up onto the balcony above him, hiding himself from view.
“Oh, how my heart hurts. Why is it that my true love is a man, and not only a man, but one a part of the family I’m supposed to hate? Maybe if the circumstances were different, we could love each other without hiding.” Oleander talks to himself, not knowing that his conversation wasn't as private as he thought.
“Oh Oleander, if it hurts you this much we can run away to another town far from here and pose as roommates. I don't know exactly where we would go, but I'd go to hell if I was with you.” Apollo slurred his words, yet it didn't take the sincerity out of his words.
“Ah! Apollo, what are you doing here? You must leave! My father will have you killed if he sees you here! Apollo, You being here is a death wish.” Oleander says in a hushed voice. “I don’t care about that, my love. I will go to the ends of earth to be your husband; I will venture through heaven just to beg God for forgiveness, I'd do anything to have you in my arms. ” Apollo yells, somehow not being heard by the guards.
“Apollo, us being together would bring nothing but tragedy. Nothing good would come from our love being brought to the public.” Oleander turns away. “You do not mean a word you say! Before I revealed myself, you sobbed about how badly you wanted me! Lying is a sin, Oleander, especially when it comes to love.” Apollo tries to reason. “Quiet! You cannot use a religion that I do not believe in against me. A relationship between us would bring nothing but tragedy. How on earth did you even get in here?” Oleander questions.
“Love brings a man to do incredible things. I scaled that fence just to see you!” Apollo smiles. “ I see… That is not creepy at all. I admire your dedication Apollo, but I demand that you leave now.. Good night.” Oleander gives a slightly disturbed smile back. What on earth was he supposed to say to this man? He loved Apollo, yet was horrified by what could possibly happen if he were to indulge in his whims.
“Wait just a moment! How could you leave me empty handed? I came here for something and I will get it if it is the last thing I do!” Apollo stutters, tripping over his feet. “What could I possibly give to you Apollo? Whatever disgusting things you were planning when trespassing into our garden will never happen. Despite what you think of me, I do indeed have some dignity!” The boy on the balcony yells angrily. “I would never think such a thing! What I wanted was your hand in marriage! I want to be your husband! Please! We can find a way to make this happen! It doesn't even need to be an official marriage! Marriage is a social construct! If we dedicate our lives to each other shouldn't that count?” Apollo rants.
“Fine then. If you believe you can find a way for us to get married, I will be your 'bride'. I’m trusting you Apollo. Goodnight, leave before the sun rises.” Oleander turns away, walking back into the safety of his room.
“I really just did that.. I must find somewhere we can run to. I need this marriage to happen before he is married to that woman. I must go to the priest for direction. By Monday, Oleander must be my husband."
