For every second he stared, another change surfaced. Her hair had even more random ends blown off from combat and frizzier than normal from the stress of sleepless nights and long days attempting to catch up on months of repairs and–well, no preparation for harvest season had been done. That means less sales, and less food for winter, and the way things were shaping up, it would be a bad one.
Mountain winters were always terrible around these parts. The face she lived on always got blasted by lake-front winds. The animals would need double feedings to catch up for winter, or else some of the younger ones could freeze to death by months end.
She sat silently, contemplating this all in her head. Good, for once she actually decided to think before blindly attacking Loki for even thinking to offer her help. She knew that it was more than her own health at stake here. The animals and…probably Loki himself. Did he even have other friends?
“…I can’t get you to back off, can I?” she chuckled, leaning back and picking her nearly shattered mug off the ground. “…Well, if you want to work here, first I gotta make sure the Duke ain’t gonna try’n kill ya for stepping wrong.”
│ ♔ │ While her hesitation didn’t go unnoticed, Loki found it better not to press on it too hard. At the very least, she was thinking about it. It wasn’t the hesitation of someone who thought he was untrustworthy. Though he quite was, but that was besides the point. She was stubborn, not suspicious. He’d take something friendly over her nearly breaking his arm any day, in all truth. That little bit was fun and all, it’s just something he’d rather avoid if he ever could.
Clasping his hands together, his signature snake-like smile appeared on his pale features. If he was going to help, he might as well start now. But where exactly to start was beyond him. He was at a loss for words, considering everything looked awful, including her. His hands clapped together turned to finger pushing in an instant, as he lost his smile as well.
❝ Surely your horse won’t trample me if I take care of him right? ❞ With those words he started to reflect on what was possibly the worse idea he’d ever had since he was born. But it was far too late now, they’d already left his mouth. The best he could do was make her forget such an idiotic statement and try again. ❝ Or perhaps I could clean up some of the fallen stuff. I’ll admit though, I don’t exactly have the upper body strength of Thor. I’m not weak, however it just means that I might not be able to do it all in one go. ❞
If he could admit through closed lips however, he wished to start with the owner of such a sad place. Normally a home reflected that of the carer, and if this place was going to get any better, then they’d have to start with her first. Not that she was exactly the beacon of grace in the first place.

Her mug cracked as she flinched from the Gods words. Anyone sticking around the farm for too long–they ran the risk of conflict with the Void but–but–Oh, by the gods she was in over her head this time. “I–” she let out a defeated sigh, running her free hand through thick, matted hair. Another sigh, and she began again. “I hate to bother you, but–I think you’re the only one I can talk to about this…without them–you know…” she shook her head silently.
Placing the mug in the dirt, she took a deep breath, recounting what had happened shortly after Lokis last visit. “A-a lot of things happened, and–and I’m–I’m not sure I just–”
The horrible things that man–that monster forced her to do. He took control and–it seemed like just a long nightmare but–the light in their eyes. She remembered it. He wanted her to remember it. He wanted her to hate him, to remember what he made her to. To break her down, and use the pieces to make his own dog of war.
The hand went back in her hair, moving on to the second part of all this. When she broke free of his control, and learned exactly how true an old phrase could become. “You ever hear of the old sayin’ “Those who fight monsters should be wary, lest they become one themselves.” That one, I think?”
She turned to him then, fear of his reaction in her baggy eyes.
│ ♔ │ If he continued to drink like he wanted, there was no doubt in his mind that he would’ve spit it out right away. She looked dreadful. Well, more dreadful than she usually did. If she kept it up, than surely a mortal like her would’ve died so soon. And she was so young too, it wouldn’t be good to lose someone young. Even if he wanted to end the world, the time wasn’t right yet. And he couldn’t shake the feeling that it wouldn’t be him that started it in the first place, too.
His boots practically slammed against the ground as he left the stump he was on. He decided for himself then, he would help. How ironic though, that the evil god of tricks would help someone from the realm he hated so much. Not that he really hated it like the other gods thought, but specifics. No one had time for specifics.
❝ Rest assured I am a very good helper. Why when I was younger my mother frequently said I had a keen eye for organization. Thor on the other hand liked to destroy the towers I built, but he is the one more willing to kill than I am, ❞ Loki let out his shrill laugh, though it hardly had any joy in it, considering he was just musing about missing his family earlier. ❝ I suppose I can also clean too, though that’s not exactly what I was good at. If you say you have a maid, though, I will not hesitate to leave again. ❞
Not that he could really stay away, as obvious by the fact that after months, he still returned to her just for a little conversation. Something he wasn’t given unless Skadi was feeling generous that day. And she was mostly the only one that would really bother to listen to him when he needed it, so losing her made him. . . Lonely again. Ah, so that was how Meredith felt.

Meredith never was one to judge. She felt for the God, really. Loneliness comes in several flavors. But oh, does it sting the same. For her, it had only been over a decade. She could never imagine millennia in Lokis shoes. Here, she had her animals, that played in the barnyard before the trickster god.
At least they would listen.
Bare feet rested in the dirt beside Loki, shifting weight to allow Meredith to sit a foot away on her old dusty porch. Silently, she handed him a hot mug of fresh cider. Though it had only been months, it felt like years after all she had been through in his absence.
“No. But, it’s…good.” her pause gave away the lie. The bags under her eyes, the piles of work needed to be done on the farm. She hadn’t even dusted up the fallen flower petals from her tulip tree. “How’ve you been up in uh…” she pointed to the sky, trying to remember the name of Lokis home.
│ ♔ │ He could catch any hint of lying, considering he was so good at it. How awful it must be to be lonely, he mused. And he did know that awful feeling as well. His loneliness wasn’t the kind where he was actually alone however, with no one visiting him. It was rather the kind where he could be surrounded by people, but when he knew they all hated him, a room of nobody was more desirable. Having people like him would’ve been nice, but look at him. He was horrible.
With a light touch to his red hair, he got the bangs out of his face as he began to drink the hot cider without flinching. Traveling alone like he did without supplies always made him thirsty. If he was ever desperate enough, he would drink from brooks or streams if he ever found them. Sometimes, though, he wouldn’t bother. He couldn’t die, so why not after all.
❝ If you wanted, I could remain here again for a good while and help you with what you need, ❞ He offered almost kindly this time. Those glowing green eyes of his looking like they were more human than snake like. His gloved fingers tapping against mug. He wouldn’t bother answering her question about how he was, since it was quite obvious now that he was on earth. ❝ What would be better than having a god helping around, right? ❞

│ ♔ │ The battle was once more won, and Loki was once more on the losing side. As was usual with who he was. No one bothered to help him as the odd couple of death and time refused to let him move. He was being bullied, and it was what he deserved when the rest of his “team” was asked about it. They’d protect other people, though, so he didn’t understand why he was the exception.
When the thanks and hand shaking was down ( which Loki didn’t participate in by simply making himself invisible ) he stormed away from the mountain, off into the little forest that was by where they fought. His frustration showed in that moment, letting himself let out a good roar, and slamming his daggers down on the ground, where they wobbled as the dirt was stabbed. His tantrum was yet complete however, as his fist hit the bark closest to him, causing his hand to sting as the wood got stuck in it.
At the very least the pain reminded him of reality. The blood spilled from the side, down to his clothes. Dying the leather a dark red color. He only watched before sighing. Maybe he should eradicate himself from existence if that was the respect he got. The crunching of leaves made him stop his thoughts momentarily. But he did bring his wound to his mouth to suck on the blood. ❝ Can’t you see this space is occupied? I expect an apology the moment you open your useless mouth to breathe. ❞

│ ♔ │ The late nights were things that were meant to be enjoyed. With the sounds of nature chirping away, and the light breeze leaving a cold feeling, but nothing that would be chilling. It was moments like these that Loki would mourn the family he could’ve possibly had, if he wasn’t like this. If he was Thor, then perhaps he could enjoy his brothers company. But he wasn’t Thor. Each one of his families hated him. The only son that seemed to like Loki was his own, the horse. However, the one problem was that he liked to call him mother, which is where all the fun for Thor began.
Either way, he couldn’t exactly do what him and his brothers used to do. Considering Baldr was dead, and Thor hated him for it just like everyone else. His children despised him as well, especially the one he liked the most, Hel. He would give anything in the world to see them all playing like him, Thor, and Baldr played. In a forest, no less, much like the one he was in.
It was the sound of wooden door closing roughly that brought the god out of his trance. He didn’t bother to lift his hood, as he knew who it was. ❝ I’m well aware I’ve been absent in visiting you. Thought it would be nice to say hello again, ❞ He spoke in his silky voice, that same old smile. ❝ How has everything been holding up, Meredith. Any other gods come and see you? ❞

│ ♔ │ As was evident, the god didn’t quite know where he was. Nor did he really care too much, anything was better than being up where the rest of his kin were. It was fitting, too, for the gods hated him as well. Only rarely would they notice his absence. It was when the rumor spread that the hooded god of mischief was being. . . Well being mischievous. That’s when they cared.
He tugged the cloak closer to his form, actually not wanting people to recognize him just yet. Believe it or not, he actually did sometimes like just walking among the mortals. Wondering what it was like to not feel obligated to do certain things. When they didn’t know who he was, he didn’t have to hear the whispers about his name, and how he was so horrible at everything. As if that wasn’t his job.
The abrupt stop he pulled almost caused him to crash into someone, which was what he was ironically avoiding. He stood there, blank faced, though it was hidden in shadow, while his mouth twitched. ❝ Do forgive me, ❞ He began the theatrics, offering a bow and a wave of his arm. ❝ I must’ve got distracted by how absolutely stunning you look. Ha, silly me! ❞

Her pout leaving, she handed the small wrapping over, letting Loki take his gift. She had to wonder what made him change his mind, though she wasn’t one to really push any further. No Loki had already made it clear that with many of the jokes the other gods were playing on him this holiday season, he was in a fouler then usual mood already.
“I would not worry too much, I did not make these.” She smiled softly, folding her arms over her chest. A thought to give the credit to Kaldr passed through her mind temporarily, but she figured Loki would take her seriously and discard the chocolate, or worse. “A mortal made them, and I simply bought them. It was my first time to the mortal realm for a purpose other then war in some time.”
│ ♔ │ Loki acted surprised, like he didn’t know other gods didn’t go and visit the mortals almost as much as he did. But he knew they were all too proud to even speak to the humans and any creature on land. Ironically the most ‘ evil ‘ of gods was the one that frequented the mortal plains, and even then he wasn’t as bad as people assumed him to be. He definitely didn’t start all those wars the gods said he did. He never interfered with the mortals like he was accused of. He preferred to watch them live their happy day to day lives without a care in the world. He’d seen them be joyous over life, and mourn over death. And a part of him was jealous they could have such mundane lives, and not be hated by everyone in the world.
❝ You should go down more often, ❞ Now he was calm, stuffing the chocolate into his face. The mortals always made delicious chocolate. He found the gods couldn’t necessarily cook as well. There should be a god of the culinary arts, for when they all got together every once in a while. Maybe then the food wouldn’t taste so bland, or foul. ❝ Those little humans are something to behold. The way they can go about their daily lives without worrying about anything. It’s something these gods should do. ❞
