Intro post! š„ Hi, I'm May (they/it) and this is my SFTH sideblog! I discovered them in January 2025 and instantly fell in love with their stuff... like, faster than anything else, I think....... which is alarming and exciting! lol
So here we are!
@bedroomconcert is my main (mostly random/fandom reblogs), so if you see that blog in your notes.. that's meeee!
Sidenote:
For some reason I didn't expect to get this URL. Let's fucking goooooo!!
For the record, it's referencing this gag in SFTH's Escape From The Vault streams (sam mispronouncing "unrelenting" ONCE and AJ using that for the rest of the campaign)
Brainworm. More info below :-)
Other things you might wanna know about me:
I like to draw! My art style is a bit of a mess atm, most of my art is either schoolwork (that Should pass for "fine arts") or anime girls.. And well, semirealism's making a comeback because of SFTH.
English isn't my native language, so I sometimes make mistakes. Though it's worth noting that my awkwardness is NOT limited to the English language, and neither is my inability to speak concisely. I've mastered the art of the Wall Of Text Jumpscare.
My memory is selectively either SHIT or weirdly specific. I apologize in advance in case I get anything wrong <3
Unless anything big changes before you read this... I'm in the SFTH Patreon, so I will sometimes post about Patreon-exclusive shows. I'll tag those posts with "sfth patreon" in case you want to avoid them!
My favourite SFTH characters include Angel, Andre Beetroot (EFTV owns my heart), Butch, Annabelle Parker, Jemima Steven(s??), Daemys, OLM, the guys in The Time We Were Alive, Heimlich the fruity henchman, Genre Susan & Alice aaaand more. Yay!
Less importantly, my other interests include the "Starkid, Shipwrecked, TCB" sphere, mediocre songwriting and vocal synthesizers (not as in "AI bro technology" but as in "ethical home cooked music"), The Stanley Parable, Who's Lila, cartoons, online creative projects, silliness andddd goofiness.
I'm saying all this not because I'm desperate for friends. In fact I'm terrible at that sort of thing and prefer to keep people at a friendly distance. BUT. I like talking about my interests. I must.
Okay that's a looong post, ending it here!!! mwah mwah thank you for reading~
wait Iām curious, what do you mean by the chocolate factory longform? The only one I can think of is the nda that was made to be broken and I feel like it was pretty tame
That's probably it? I don't remember for sure what it's called but I think that's right.
I don't wanna be mean but respectfully I don't care about how tame it is </3 For me it was really uncomfortable to watch them (accidentally) veer into weird territory over and over again, so I don't plan on rewatching it rn. It left a bad taste in my mouth, that's all. I hope it didn't feel like I was telling others not to watch or enjoy it, it's just my opinion on the longform based on that first and last time I saw it š
Rewatching the Jingle Boys special and the toxic Yuri in the Genre game is unmatched.
What if we lived in a gated/ suburban community and were neighbours, even though I make a lot more money than you, and I was your husbandās boss?
And once, you and your husband came over for dinner and you saw my extensive private library, and we bonded over (and fell in love over) books, and we had incredible tension, and since that day I havenāt stopped thinking about you?
And what if I became covetous and jealous, and fired your husband because I hated him and wanted you for myself? What if I goaded you into coming over to see my library again, and you saw my expensive, futuristic sci-fi kitchen and we fell into each other and couldnāt keep apart any longer? But then you remembered I tore your family apart because of my lust for you, and we fought with the ancient swords on display in my home (?) ?
But THEN it was revealed that, in your crazed desire for me, you killed (and blended up) my husband? That I didnāt even know I had?
AND we were both women? And we looked at each other like this?
Susan and Alice, you will always be famous. To me.
I think after I get my bachelor's degree (if... if I get there........ sobs. <a month left im cooked) I would like to challenge myself and make a drawing for each and every lf SFTH has ever posted, publicly AND on patreon :-)
the fandom might not be ready for this conversation but despite being fun and entertaining, sfthās portrayals of women in stories is not particularly feminist
starting with the characters who are more thought out and planned, maureen and sarge.
maureen is revered and admired and while not exactly hyper feminine, she is defined by the stereotype of the femme fatale and (even if not intentionally at least implicitly) sexualized
sarge is also admired, crushed on, and respected deeply which is i think in large part because of her masculinity
then with long form characters, they are most often defined by their roles in other peoples lives (friends, sisters, mothers, wives, girlfriends, love interests) rather than by their own stories.
mary in murders in space is defined by her mission to rescue her husband, even if she is absolutely brilliant, and that is acknowledged right at the end. cindy campbell is reduced to a cheesy rom/com love interest and daughter despite having way better main character development potential than john james. alice laura is defined by being jimmys sister and john davidās daughter, even if she can summon a portal to hell its not about her. amanda in cdiyw is clarissaās supportive friend, clarissa spends the whole story trying to win mark back.
and i could go on.
the nature of sfthās close knit unchanging group gives them the strength of knowing how to weave a perfect narrative together but it also is the weakness to their storytelling because theyāre four cis men. they donāt have the lived experience to authentically represent other peoplesā stories
do they play women respectfully? yes. are their portrayals fun and engaging? yes. are the roles the women fall into within the stories limiting and a result of society being misogynistic? also yes.
this isnāt an unsolvable problem by any means. while the structural issue of being 4 cis men will remain, recognizing these patterns, studying up on feminist ideology, and staying mindful when coming up with characters and stories can go a long way for more feminist portrayals of women in their stories
edit: also having women comedians and improvisers guest often and frequently! support and elevate the voices of women in comedy and the performing arts from your place of privilege, not just as one offs but as repeated guests if and whenever possible to improve chemistry and saturation of different stories they can tell
There have been many times where I looked at sfth's introduction of female characters being an extension of a male character or simply being a device to help the male character in his story, or I've looked at the fandom and wondered about why they loved female characters, or how a story had an unsatisfactory ending for a female character but most probably never the male.
I couldn't understand how people were just. okay. with how Maureen was portrayed. She has so much lore and character development to her. She lives in a constant state of grief due to her wife, Chlorine, dying and never had a moment to properly grieve or even try to get over her before being thrown into a world of hatred and despair. Her world literally turns upside down as she goes murders everyone who was present at Chlorine's death, uncaring if they had played a role in her murder or not because she was so consumed by her own guilt to even process their innocence, or perhaps to even care. And what's symbolic is that her love for Chlorine was portrayed through song, dance and music, which has now turned into her weapon to cause chaos and pain to avenge Chlorine. I could go on and on about how incredible Maureen is as a character, but it always threw me off when that was all ignored in favour of her body being talked about, and her looks. Which, in turn, just led to this blatant ignorance of who she really was as a character, for (from my perspective) AJ and how he viewed her.
For Cindy, I felt so incredibly bad for her. A woman who was neglected her entire life by her father who overtly loved a man and never her. I felt a strong injustice when her story ended up in her falling in love with John (I'm assuming that's his name, I have honestly forgotten). It immediately felt so unnerving and uncomfortable for Sam to say that, when her age was said to be 18, they were just to have sex. I know that's just normal sfth humour, but that doesn't mean it's fine. She was just introduced only a few minutes ago and instead of being able to have her only storyline and actually mean something, she is reduced to just being a love interest for John because he's single. I felt like she should've had a chance to tell her own story, rather than, once more, the male main characters do it for her. She never had a moment to develop or truly be something like how John did. And don't even get me started on the line "John James trusted me" because, while it's nice for their love story, it was completely unnecessary overall. She did not need a man in her life to feel capable when she knew was already was. She had taught herself how to make a hobnob by watching her father despite his wishes, she had enough knowledge to not just learn, but teach someone and her father how to make this incredible biscuit that was never before made even though she had never actually made a simple hobnob before. She did not need John to prove her legitimacy, her skill, nor her potential!!!! She was perfectly fine on her own!!!!! She was just portrayed as such because John "needed" a love interest and so her entire storyline was thrown away for the benefit of telling the story of a male main character.
Sarge is a very interesting character. I was immediately pulled to her because of her role in the lives of the students of St Churnleys. I like how, despite how she is just a character used to push and help the main male characters, she still has depth to her and I feel as though Midge portrayed that very well. The scene that made me feel admiration for Sarge was the scene where she convinces Monty to transform into the beast, despite the fact that he definitely does not want to. She pushes the students to get out of their comfort zone, for no reason but to help them be themselves and learn to love their curses. She was allowing Monty to make the rest of the lower years uncomfortable for the chance for Monty to finally be comfortable with his curse. She provided him confidence, support and did it all without needing to hold his hand and give him a cookie. She simply passed him a torch so that he could walk through a dark tunnel, a torch no one had offered him before. And I feel that is important how she isn't degraded to being this loving, motherly, maternal, caring, mother figure that people (whether that be the audience or sfth themselves) expect her to be. She is their teacher who supports them. She is an expert in her field. She shows resilience, strength and independence throughout the episodes. She is single-handedly, the most important side character (and dare I say she should've been/is a main character) in the entire series because of her influence and she has no confirmed curse. It sucks how she's only their teacher and made to help the main male characters because she is genuinely an incredible character who is beautifully well written by Midge.
Anywho. That's months of bottled up emotions and feelings i never once shared.
[HI! If you felt that something I said was dodgy or perhaps rude, then I encourage you to call me out for it! I am trying to learn and face misogyny with my two fists called knowledge and understanding, and I may be uneducated about a certain topic that is shown in this post. Therefore, I would like for you to not go running to a confessions blog to complain, but to tell me directly and help me become more educated! Thank you for reading the above and this.]
!!! this is all wonderful! i donāt have the braincells at the moment to add anything much but i really really like your notes on sarge and how she isnāt a mother figure despite the fandomās insistence on making her one
Nearly two months spent on this and I do not regret it! I present to you, sfth as ponies! Thank you, pigeons, for helping me throughout the entire journey on the discord server!
I'm surprised I'm so good at drawing ponies. Before this, I'd only drawn a pony once. 0.o
they keep playing that damn rasputin song at comic con and every time i swear i can HEAR each bit of the "hoot from the ship" edit in my head. It cannot be removed from the song now.
Lol pretty sure they've all answered this many times, one of which I think was in a post-longform qna or something, idk which one tho. On the patreon there are a few QnAs in a playlist/collection in which this probably comes up
(but in this instance it was just tom doing a QnA by himself for the funsies)
