                  from an interview with hwang dong-hyuk ( here ): ‘  it’s true that season one ended in an open-ended way, but i actually thought that this could be good closure for the whole story too. season one ends with gi-hun turning back and not getting on the plane to the states. and that was, in fact, my way of communicating the message that you should not be dragged along by the competitive flow of society, but that you should start thinking about who has created the whole system — and whether there is some potential for you to turn back and face it. so it’s not necessarily gi-hun turning back to get revenge. it could actually be interpreted as him making a very on the spot eye contact with what is truly going on in the bigger picture. so i thought that might be a good simple, but ambiguous, way to end the story for gi-hun. ’

i don’t think gi-hun is going back for ‘revenge’ necessarily either. like that’s not the word i would use. seeing this, i think i understand that gi-hun is beginning to realize just how much bigger this operation is than him, and that the system could never be taken down so easily. i think he wants to help end the games, and when he turns around instead of getting on the plane, he’s having that realization? there’s no doubt this man is traumatized, but he doesn’t want revenge. he wants justice, i think, and quite simply, he just wants it to stop. he doesn’t want anyone else to suffer like he or sang-woo or sae-byeok or any of the others did. so what’s he gonna do about it? turning away from the plane, he doesn’t know just yet, but he knows he has to do something.

                   in a game like this, all of the players were doing what they needed to to survive. it’s a simple concept. so he, for one, couldn’t necessarily fault mi-nyeo for wanting to form an alliance with deok-su. he’s the strongest, the most ruthless, and many here were afraid of him simply because of the way he looks. it just makes sense. now that she’s been cast away from him, however — due to his greediness, no doubt — gi-hun sort of felt sorry for her. a terrible thing to feel in their situation. nevertheless, he slowly walks toward the bed she sat on, breaking his leftover corn in half and offering it to her. ‘  here. i’m not that hungry, i can’t eat it all myself,  ’ eyes move down to her. hopefully she wouldn’t take advantage of the small glimmer of sympathy there. ‘ go on, take it,  ’
