Civic Power
As same as the literacy, civic is also a power that shows everywhere. They could form files, newspaper, and even a TV show. They have a same method: expressing message and idea. Like Gabor said. It is a right and people could use the right to change the something, like government. That reminds me about the famous speech of Martin Luther King, I HAVE A DREAM. That is a good example for the Gabor’s idea. We build the civic and civic can be the world, so we can use civic to change the world. Before that, I use to think civic is just like the history knowledge and the knowledge cannot change anything in our reality life, expect the grade of our history class. After I get the thinking from Gabor, I find civic, like language, is a power for us to change the world.
John Swales has written a very interesting article. the idea of a discourse community is like a members only club that one must buy into to become a part of this exclusive partnership. almost every group i can think of whether it be academic, athletic, or social has an element of exclusivity. i...

DISCOURSE COMMUNITIES
If discourse communities is a book, we have to read it everyday to allow our social life be more successful. However, as a foreigner in English-language country, discourse communities is not easy for me and actually, I do not agree with these concepts spoken from Swales. From my view, discourse communities is a kind of social stuff and should be specified into several concept and to follow these concept for getting a better discourse communities. These kind of social skills should be learned and practiced in daily life and get the concept for your own. Different people have different concept from their mind and feeling.
We should not take lightly the choice of which genres we ask our students to write in. Nor should we keep thosechoices invisible to students, as though all writing required the same stances, commitments, and goals; as thoughall texts shared pretty much the same forms and features; as though all...
Writing Across the University
In most traditional education, teachers have some ‘rule’ and ‘principle’ to make sure students get good grades and get some skill. For example, writing is an important literacy and skill. It is in everywhere. Not only for exchange information, but also we could express our feeling and idea. However, in most school education, for students, writing is just an assignment and they do it for avoiding the blame from teacher and parents. They do not even consider what could influence them if they finish homework with heart and consideration. Additionally, most teachers, especially Asian teachers, would give students the frame and point of writing. For example, for insuring the content be completely and logical, students should use some worlds, like firstly, secondly, however, and so on. Most students could complete those assignments in time with full page, but without their own style and think. That situation is totally different in college. Professors would give students some topic or sentence to guide students address their feeling and thinking with their own style. Like the UWRT which class I take this semester, we would express our idea or thinking after reading some essay. Those essays mostly have some opposite view and we should find out our own reasons to support our opinion, not with ‘rules’.

Shitty first draft
Maybe everyone has the confusion that their first draft always be… not good, like no clear topic, no beautiful sentence, no humor. At beginning, I think I am the one of few people who have this problem. However, once time, I was talking with my friends about writing , they said it was not easy to choose a sentence as beginning, then they also have no idea about what they should say in the next. So do I, when I have writing, the first and most important thing I need consider is the construction and organization. It is like I have so many thing to said but do not which one should be the start. SHITTY FIRST DRAFT is a good way to name my thinking about the first draft. Then, with more practice of writing, I find the first draft be more easy and I have more interest to write. Do not worry about what is the best sentence as the open paragraph, I just write down and I find the next sentence just going out, then a whole passage done. Even if it not perfect, however, you have another chance to make it better. It always good that make a start.
learn to read
Malcolm X is a great icon. Unlike the most famous writer or elocutionist who get good education from university, Malcolm X just get eighth grade education and is only able to read and write some simple English sentence. There are so many people who are like Malcolm, not a literate man. However, even with the low educated level, Malcolm still be famous and influence lots of people. The key about success of Malcolm is his thirst about reading. He wants to read more like Bimbi, so he tries his best to absorb more knowledge. Firstly, he gets a target, the dictionary that is his first step to learn. Secondly, He put every available and possible time into learning dictionary, even the sleep time. This behavior let me think about the study-hard students in my senior high school and they all get good results. Finally, he could read the entire novel or essay and get the idea about what he read. With the help of literacy, he could know more about the history of ‘bleached’ and black people and start. the movement about civil right. Until now, even Malcolm X get into the prison and just be educated until eight grade, no one could say no about he is a great person. Thus, your background and education is not necessary. The key to change your life and let you be success is youself.
Sponsorship and Access
Brandt gives two different examples, Raymond Branch and Dora Lopez, to explain the relationship about sponsorship, access and success. Raymond has been born in a rich family. His father is a professor and mother is estate executive. The high-class family and the right time indicate his future life will be easier than others. Thanks for his father, he get touch with computer technology early and in that time, the computer software and hardware become popular. Before that, Raymond got his first computer from his parents and that made him be more skillful and familiar than others. Absolutely, expect the help of finance and resource from his family, another reason to help him be successful is himself. Raymond interest in computer and is willing to spend time for it. He can use whole summer time to roam software and hardware stores, test new computers games and other things about computer.
Another person, Dora Lopez, has been born in a poor family. Without the finance and resource supported from her parents like Raymond’s, Dora have to learn Spanish for life convenience. The only resource to help her is her Colombia relatives. Fortunately, she gets the chance to be the translator and also be success.
The two different life both lead these two people to success. life is magic thing, it could give you various sponsorship and the key to change that is yourself.
3 metaphors about literacy
Literacy is a kind of hard to be defined, because it is not a real thing in our life. In the past, if you ask what is literacy to me, the first answer appearing in my mind is reading and writing. However, I know literacy is not just that. Fortunately, SYLVIA SCRIBNER gives literacy three metaphor to help us acknowledge it well.
First metaphor is literacy as adaptation. In the modern life, everything includes literacy. For example, when you go shopping, you need the see the ingredient of about the food NUTRITION FACTS, and mostly, you need to know how to use the cellphone or other electronic device to make your life be more convenient. I think as the life improving, people need to learn more and be more literary for following the change of society.
Second metaphor is literacy as power. That is easier to understand, like ‘knowledge is power’. There are so many knowledgeable writers and litterateurs using their work and mind to change the world and help people, like Martin Luther King ‘I HAVE A DREAM’.
Third metaphor is literacy as grace. That is why most parents want to give their children better education. Literacy could change people’s behavior and you could see the difference between educated person and the one who never go to school. SCRIBNER give us a example, like BIBLE. In the history, the one who read BIBLE and ‘act’ like it would be the person who is literary.
Are we all writers?
In the traditional views, writers are professional, knowledgeable and profound. However, Trubeck gives us a different but interesting opinion. “we are all writers” because all of we would write something today and post it in the internet, like Twitter and Facebook, although some of the information is meaningless. After getting that view, I absolutely agree what Trubeck saying. In our social and personal life, there are many things happen and various emotion and these are the reason and resource for you to want to write down something. When you write down something, you get practice and at the same time, the person who follows you, like in Twitter, would know what happen to you and how do you feel and that would make their life be more colorful and not boring. That is the thing writers should do, so we are all writters.
