redhoodedjaybird:
Jason turned on the shower to warm up the water while he got out of his tactical gear and other clothing, barely finding the energy and will to do so with how heavy he felt in body and mind. Once he’d stripped off, though, he stood motionless under the jet of blisteringly hot water, numb to the heat of it as Jason broke down again, the sound of the water mostly coving up his sobbing.
Jay sank to the floor, curling up again, bereft, and stayed there until he’d cried himself out.
Only after he’d gotten most of it out of his system did he emerge from the shower, shivering a little as the cool air from the cave hit his skin before drying off and redressing in the clothes Alfred had left out for him, shoving his feet back into his boots and then shuffling back to the infirmary to check back in.
Alfred turned his head slightly seeing the figure in the doorway. “Oh, good, the clothes fit. I wasn’t sure what size to get you, so I got a few.” He patted the chair beside him. “Come sit, lad.”
All of Bruce’s boys had been on the small side, Tim and Dick staying that way, but Jason grew into the long limbs and body. If he hadn’t stopped growing he would be taller than Master Bruce by now.
“Warm enough? It can get quite cold down here.”
redhoodedjaybird:
Jason was reluctant to look Alfred in the eye out of shame and shock, but he forced himself to comply with the request, as difficult as it was to maintain without almost disintegrating into another breakdown.
“Yes, sir,” he nodded stiffly, acknowledging Alfred’s words, even though he was in no state to take them to heart with how deep into his emotional spiral he was.
He nodded again when instructed to go get cleaned up and take some time to pull himself back together, dragging every last bit of focus he had onto doing something practical that didn’t require him to think about what he’d done until he’d at least gotten into some clean clothes and had a moment to slow down and decompress from the incident.
“That’s my good lad.” He patted Jason on the shoulder.
Alfred went around to locker room to find the clothes he kept in the cave for Jason. He had bought several clothes in different sizes when Jason had come back to them. Alfred grabbed a pair of wool socks, boxers, a pair of sweatpants, and a sweater for the lad. He took the clean clothes into the shower room for Jason along with some towels and some soap for the boy.
Alfred returned to Bruce’s side to check on his son. Bruce’s breathing had improved slightly, which Alfred was grateful for. “Jason will be alright, Master Bruce. You’ll see.” He patted Bruce’s hand.
redhoodedjaybird:
undauntedway:
Cleaning the blood of Bruce’s face he took notes of injuries he found as he cleaned the blood away. He turned towards in Jason in shock. While he knew that the relationship the two had was not perfect but this?
Jason had done this to his father?
“Master Jason, son, I am going to need your help. Okay?” He gave the young man a list of things to gather. Something to keep his mind off what was going on around them for the time being.
He pulled the armor plates off dropping them on the ground. There was a good chance that Master Bruce was suffering from a punctured lung, but Alfred wouldn’t know till he had the x-ray machine set up.
Working quickly he took x-rays of Bruce and while he waited for them he placed an IV line into Bruce’s arm and placed an oxygen mask on his son’s face.
“Jason? What happened?” He asked calmly.
Jason complied with the instructions, operating on autopilot as he was clearly in a daze and not in any fit frame of mind to properly process what was going on. Especially since he was the cause of it.
After collecting all of the things on the list and returning them to Alfred, he stood back again, keeping out of the way by sitting down on the floor across the other side of the room, head in his hands again as he got lost in his sense of guilt and horror at having beaten Bruce so brutally, and really for no good reason.
“Huh?” Jay asked when realizing Alfred was talking to him again.
“I-I don’t…” he faltered, trying to pull enough of his focus back together to remember what exactly had occurred and then explain it. “There was an arms deal… I was going to… Bruce showed up, distracted me. GCPD showed up…”
Jason didn’t know if he was making any sense, but in all honesty, his thoughts weren’t exactly coherent right now.
“I got angry because he messed everything up. I… He wouldn’t fight back, and I-I… I just lost it. I didn’t mean to… I swear… I just…” Jay explained, clearly distraught and struggling, bordering on hyperventilating from his elevated emotional state.
Bruce was stable for now, that much he knew. But, to see the damage that was done to Master Bruce was done by Master Jason’s hands set a stone in Alfred’s heart. Jason’s death had left a wounded bleeding hole in not only Bruce’s heart but Alfred’s as well.
Steady hands went to Jason’s shoulders. “Look at me, lad. Look at me.” He ordered gently. “Lad, whatever what was said on that rooftop you need to remember that your father loves you very much.” He cupped Jason’s face. “Do you understand me?”
He let go of Jason’s face to tug gently at boy’s jacket. “Go get cleaned up, lad. Take a shower and give yourself a moment. I will get you something to wear.”
Master Bruce could left alone for a few moments, Alfred felt. Long enough for Alfred to take care of this lad for a moment.
redhoodedjaybird:
Jason hadn’t known what else to do. He couldn’t just leave Bruce there, nor could Red Hood go casually strolling into the ER with Batman of all people, and he was afraid to call anyone else in the family.
He’d carried Bruce down from the rooftop at least, a numbness settling in as he forced everything out of his mind except keeping Bruce alive long enough to take him to someone who could help.
Finding the batmobile wasn’t hard, and having Bruce with him helped him get around the security system before propping him up in the passenger seat and checking he was still breathing before shooting Alfred a message and driving Bruce back to the manor as fast as he could, not giving a damn if he broke the speed limit in the process.
Jason didn’t speak until he and Alfred had gotten Bruce to the medical room, the younger male dazed with the distress and shame of what he’d done.
“I did…” he admitted without hesitation, standing back from the medical table as Alfred took over and got to work on treating Bruce’s injuries.
“It was me. I-I’m sorry… I…” Jason faltered through a fresh wave of tears as he saw the real extent of the damage now that the cowl was off. “I did this…”
Cleaning the blood of Bruce’s face he took notes of injuries he found as he cleaned the blood away. He turned towards in Jason in shock. While he knew that the relationship the two had was not perfect but this?

Bruce cupped the back of Jason’s head holding him to his shoulder as he cried. He tried to keep his eyes open, but it was starting to be a chore. Each breath was painful, but Bruce knew he had to keep his eyes open for Jason.
Sucking in a painful breath Bruce tried to speak to his son, but all that came out was painful wheezing sound. His hands gripped the back of Jason’s coat as tightly as he could holding Jason to his wheezing chest. His vision started to go black as he held on.
It took some time for Jason to register the noticeable shift in the way Bruce’s weight leant against him, along with the straining of his breathing that gave away the very real probability that Jay had broken at least a few of Bruce’s ribs to an extent that there was a risk of puncturing his lung.
The moment the realization hit him, Jason pulled back enough to try to get a look at Bruce, and the sight that greeted him made his stomach twist into knots. There was so much blood, and between that and the swelling and severe bruising already blooming up from the damage, Bruce was hardly recognizable beneath the cowl.
“Bruce…?”
Jay’s brain pieced together the visuals of the present moment with the memory of his own merciless beating at the hands of the Joker, sending a wave of panic and horror through him at what he’d done, frozen for the moment for what to do.
He waited near the ramp as the car roared down the drive. He was sent a message to wait for Bruce to return. Something about injuries but that’s all the butler knows. His hands were clasped behind his back, Alfred closed his eyes for a moment as the lights blinded him.
As the top of the car opens he sees that Master Bruce is bloody, he moves on instinct towards Bruce. “My goodness, what happened?” His hands slowly unlock the cowl dropping it down to the ground. “Oh my,” He looked up at the car seeing Master Jason sitting there. “Help me get him on the table,” he ordered his second oldest grandson.
Together they moved Bruce to the medical table. “What happened,” he asked Jason. Bruce looked as if he hit by a train or a fist many times. He started to quickly get the body armor off. Alfred didn’t like the sound of Bruce’s breathing.
ticktikboom:
“I’m not angry, Alfred. I promise. I don’t want you to worry about that.“ Maddie gently held onto his hand. Her face brightened at the fact that he was going to let her take care of him for once, and not the other way around. “Since you’re okay with staying off your feet, I think I can talk the doctor into it. I’ll be right back.” Maddie left the room for a few minutes and managed to sign him out early with the condition that he would be cared for at home. She returned with a wheelchair. “Sorry, they insisted. Let’s get you out of that bed.”
Alfred sighed as she left the room. She was right he was very lucky with only the broken arm. A few weeks of rest would do him some good, that’s for sure. When she returned with a wheelchair, Alfred raised an eyebrow. “I can see.” He wanted to go home, so he would use the wheelchair. “Very well. Let’s go home.”
ticktikboom:
“I wouldn’t know. I only do the fake ones to avoid bugs.” Maddie had no green thumb to speak of. Alfred had tried teaching her how to garden as a child, but it didn’t take. She never had the patience. “Why don’t you let me make you two dinner tomorrow night?” She chewed on her bottom lip a bit, bracing herself. “I, um, really want you and Bruce to meet the guy I’ve been seeing. John. Things are getting semi-serious, so I figure it’s time. No reason not to rip off the bandaid.”
“I have to have some plants in the house. The only time I didn’t have any plants is when I was in the Army.” His tiny apartment he had then barley had anything of his in it. “You make dinner? Well, that would be lovely.” He looked over at her. “A boy, hm?” Alfred wondered how Bruce would handle hearing that his sister was dating someone. “Well, would John be joining us for dinner?”
nerdybirdboy:
“I suppose so…” It wasn’t like he hadn’t told Bruce to rest many times too, so he guessed he was just as much of a hypocrite. It seemed to be a bit of a family trait, despite that most of them weren’t related by blood.
“Thanks, Alfred,” Tim said when he was handed his tea. “I know, but what if something has happened? Shouldn’t I do something then?” If that were the case, and Bruce wasn’t already dead yet, he was stubborn enough to survive a few more hours and by then they would hopefully know if he was okay and just late.
“He’s better than he use to be,” Alfred admitted. “Having you all here has helped with that. He takes care of himself more now than he use to.” Alfred remembered the few early years of Bruce only stopping when Alfred forced him to.
“If something had happened we would have heard about it from Miss Barbara and you know that.” Alfred took a drink from his tea. “What you would wait here for him to return. Your older brothers are out there and are very capable of taking care of your father.”
concertedlysuper:
Yoyo blinked “You wouldn’t? Not even the slightest?” Wouldn’t Alfred want someone more… normal? Someone who didn’t accidentally break things and didn’t ask awkward or stupid questions. “You really like me as I am? Even when I cause more work for you?” Though, he always tried to help Alfred, but it wasn’t always needed.
“You are no different than the rest of the family, sweetheart.” He told him gently. “Your grandfather was the same way as a child. Always wanted to help when he was a boy. So did your father.” He whispered as if hiding a secret. “To tell you the truth, those are some of my favorite memories of them growing up.” He gently patted Yoyo on the head. “I wouldn’t want you any other way.” He went back to his normal speaking voice. “Now, I say it’s time for an after-school snack.”

“Lunch would be wonderful.” Leslie grinned, adding with a tone that allowed for little argument. “Don’t be selling yourself short now.”
She supposed she would have a much more pleasant time talking to Alfred than trying to coax Bruce into conversation at any rate. Leslie could always try to pin the younger man down later. “It’s been a while since we have been able to catch up. I think we are long overdue anyway.”
“Would you like some tea, Leslie?” He asked her. It was noon, so that means it was tea time. “Most people that come to the house want to see Master Bruce.”
She was right. It had been a while since they had seen each other. “You’re as lovely as ever, Leslie. I have missed you.”

“Ah.” And Leslie couldn’t quite keep the disappointment out of her voice. “He was supposed to meet me for lunch… no matter.”
“How are you Alfred?”
“Ah, I see.” Alfred cleared his throat. “Well, I know I make a poor substitute, but we can have lunch.” He gave her a smile. “I am as well as I can be.”
