Alex knew she shouldn't have brought it up at Desire's, should have waited til they were alone. But she wasn't entirely thinking things through these days. And seeing the way the other girls had been watching the two of them had made her feel paranoid. It had also fed into the steady growing fear that he was going to start distancing himself from her. As they stepped outside she flinched as she heard the door slam behind him. She'd made him mad, she wasn't sure she'd ever seen him mad at her and she hated the feeling.
She felt as though she couldn't look at him as she spoke, to see that look on his face made her hesitate. And she needed to get those words out there. Any fears she had she usually hid as best she could. But she'd never been able to hide from Elijah, and had never wanted to hide anything from him. The reminder that her heart had stopped making her flinch, she hated the reminder. "I'm sorry....I saw the way they were looking at us and I couldn't handle it..." Her voice was still soft, she was trying to remain calm. But hearing his frustration and lack of answer only fueled her own. "Well I need to have this conversation!" She stopped her pacing in front of him and took a deep unnecessary breath. "I just...if you're going to push me away I'd rather know now. " It would gut her but at least she could try and prepare herself for it.
Elijah looked at her as he spoke. His whole body feeling hot with anger. There was so much he had reasons to be angry at. So many things he wanted to take that anger out on. He'd been pretty content for months. He'd almost forgotten how good it felt to be this angry. There was a clarity in the rage. "Who gives a good god-damn about the way anyone looks at us? When has that ever fucking mattered?" When she yelled back at him he stood up straighter. He wasn't going to hit Alex. But everything in his body language screamed that he was ready for a fight. When she spoke something cold rushed through him. Because why was he fighting it? What had he brought to her life anyway? She'd still died. Horribly. What did he bring to anyone's life in the long term? His muscles relaxed as he looked at Alex, "Everyone leaves Alex. Sooner or later. Everyone fuckin' leaves. The only thing I can promise you is I'm going to let you down. It's just a matter of time."
