‟             YES!  Okay,  I say  f r i e s.  You know where,            „             she replies excitedly,  her smile  s m u g  as she looks to the other in the drivers seat,  dropping her previously clenched fist that had won her  victory  in rock-paper-scissors back to the cupholder.  She picks up the large Baja Blast slushie and takes a long sip of the   s l o s h y  liquid as she leans back in the passenger seat.  She really    l o v e d   turning this into a game.  It was far more fun than  bickering  about how got to pick out the  snacks  or dinner locations.  But what she  loved  was  winning  the competitions.  Sure,  it was just rock-paper-scissors  ...  but it was still a victory.

The corner of her mouth tilts up   conspiratorially   as she looks scrolls through a few pictures on her phone.  She presses her lips together to hide her smile as she   s i n k s   into the corner of the couch,  face partially covered by the hood of her CIA sweatshirt.  Her feet are placed on the cushions, her knees up and obstructing her view of the woman across from her on the large couch.  It had been a  year  of friendship since their first real night of talking to each other on the previous Christmas Eve.  Now the holidays had   come   and   gone,  and Nessa had opted to catch a plane to  Seattle  after Christmas in Chicago,  rather than going back to Virginia for her last few days before heading back out on a mission.  It was now New Years Eve,  and they’d opted to stay in rather then go out.  The countdown in New York filled the screen of the TV as both woman   l o u n g e d   on the couch.  She drums her fingers lightly on the back of her phone before she glances towards the coffee table where her now   e m p t y   glass sits.

It wasn’t as though the pair hadn’t crossed the line of  friendship  a few times already,  but it hadn’t been anything particularly  s e r i o u s.  It hadn’t even gone much farther than some making out,  as if they were  teenagers  in their early stages of dating.  Except they  weren’t  dating.  Because how could they?  They were both travelers by trade,  and most of Vanessa’s life was spent being someone  else.  Dating simply wasn’t in the cards.  Not now.  They were simply friends  ...  that   kissed   sometimes.
