hi, do you have anything about combining magic and technology? :)
Hi there.
I’ve found a few resources which I’ve listed below. Otherwise, here are a few tips that might help you out with this.
Think About How Magic & Technology Would Interact
Personally, I think it makes more sense for the technology in the world to be powered by the pre-existing magic… but of course, that’s not an absolute rule and by all means, the magic doesn’t necessarily have to exist before the technology.
However, it is important to think about how these two elements interact. Imagine if it was commonplace in our world for people to wield energy. Do you think we would be using that to power electrical devices and the things we rely on, or would we still burn through our natural resources?
What would weapons look like, what kind of devastation would they bring? How would the way we educate our children change, and what kind of professions and skills would emerge out of this new magical era?
Think about the science and machinery we already have. What would happen if we added magic into the mix?
Establish Rules
The more you know about the world you’re writing, the easier it is to work with. What is the ‘norm’, first of all? Once you know what can and cannot be done between these two things, then you know exactly how much room you have to play in. It also helps the reader get a grasp of the world’s laws, keeping things easy to understand and most importantly, easy to imagine.
Consider the Environment
I’m really showing my nerd colours today, but there were a couple of games that sprung to mind when you said this, where I think the combination of magic and technology is done well. The first being FFXIV: A Realm Reborn.
It’s a MMORPG; in the world of Eorzea, you can play as characters such as Black Mage, White Mage, etc… Typically, magic-wielders, who use Magic Points as power behind their attacks/spells. Having played through the WHM route, there was a heavy emphasis on the interaction between the use of magic and the direct effect it had on the environment.
Whilst some believed using the magics of the natural world was exploitation, others saw it as a way of establishing harmony between Eorzea and the elementals, proving the two could coexist and help one another.
Anyway, in this world of magic and mystery, there is also the Garlean Empire who have advanced technology known as magitek (something which appears in VI too). As you can imagine, it’s a mix of magic and technology. The machines the Garleans create are powered by ‘Ceruleum’, a powerful, unstable form of energy.
In the game, there are a couple of areas where Garlean territory lies in the midst of the almost medieval-style, magical parts of the realm. They have huge, metallic structures and bases, patrolled by soldiers and weaponised Vanguards. They’re heavily associated with - and tied to - very unnatural practices and materials. The magitek mount is animated machinery, powered by the magics already present in the world (as Ceruleum is mined or created by draining elemental crystals).
All I can say is that it looks pretty unnatural to move from the earthy, rocky settings of Western Thanalan (desert-country) into Cape Westwind, to name on example. So it’ll be interesting to think about how the technology appears in comparison to the magic, assuming the latter is natural, of course.
Consider Technological Advancement
Another game where this kind of mechanical-magical merge is prominent is Lost Odyssey. This is set during a magical industrial revolution, in which the sudden increase of power in magic brings with it a huge amount of weapon-tech, including machinery which can harvest the power of certain elemental magics to further research and industrial expansion.
In the game - although I haven’t played it for many, many years - I remember walking around the cities and seeing the magical generators and machines that saw to the upkeep and maintenance of everyday life.
Also, technology is something that some countries aggressively pursue whilst others don’t. Industrial revolution might not happen everywhere at the same time, so it might be useful to think about how different aspects of your world are affected, specifically how the balance between the two comes across from place-to-place.
Anyway, these are just very basic things to think about. It’s always useful to keep an eye out for follower responses too as you can get some suggestions that way. Otherwise, please find resources below!
I hope this helps… best of luck…!

What are the signs of emotional abuse?
Abusive Expectations - Makes impossible demands, requires constant attention, and constantly criticizes.
Aggressing - Name calling, accusing, blames, threatens or gives orders, and often disguised as a judgmental “I know best” or “helping” attitude.
Constant Chaos - Deliberately starts arguments with you or others. May treat you well in front of others, but changes when you’re alone.
Rejecting - Refusing to acknowledge a person’s value, worth or presence. Communicating that they useless or inferior or devaluing their thoughts and feelings.
Denying - Denies personal needs (especially when need is greatest) with the intent of causing hurt or as punishment. Uses silent treatment as punishment. Denies certain events happened or things that were said. Denies your perceptions, memory and sanity by disallowing any viewpoints other than their own which causes self-doubt, confusion, and loss of self-esteem.
Degrading - Any behavior that diminishes the identity, worth or dignity of the person such as: name-calling, mocking, teasing, insulting, ridiculing,
Emotional Blackmail - Uses guilt, compassion, or fear to get what they want.
Terrorizing - Inducing intense fear or terror in a person, by threats or coercion.
Invalidation - Attempts to distort your perception of the world by refusing to acknowledge your personal reality. Says that your emotions and perceptions aren’t real and shouldn’t be trusted.
Isolating - Reducing or restricting freedom and normal contact with others.
Corrupting - Convincing a person to accept and engage in illegal activities.
Exploiting - Using a person for advantage or profit.
Minimizing - A less extreme form of denial that trivializes something you’ve expressed as unimportant or inconsequential.
Unpredictable Responses - Gets angry and upset in a situation that would normally not warrant a response. You walk around on eggshells to avoid any unnecessary drama over innocent comments you make. Drastic mood swings and outbursts.
Gaslighting - A form of psychological abuse involving the manipulation of situations or events that cause a person to be confused or to doubt their perception and memories. Gaslighting causes victims to constantly second-guess themselves and wonder if they’re losing their minds.

Dark Skin, Paleness, and Undead Skin
Undead Dark Skin
Anonymous asked: Here’s an odd one for you. You’ve written some fantastically useful posts on describing skin color. See, some of my characters are undead. And, since my only experiences with death and seeing dead bodies has been with white people, I don’t know how to accurately describe my PoC characters. (And I’m hesitant to google it, understandably I think.) Do you have advice on how different skin tones change after death?
Honestly, I think you need to do your own research on this. It’s a matter of searching for “what happens to body after death” and “how skin changes after death.” Just avoid image searches if you don’t want to see dead bodies (as we don’t really either). Depending on stages of death and other factors, there’s the discoloring that occurs, from green to purpling to blackening, and skin becoming grayed and ashen etc. The appearances will just look differently on darker skin obviously.
My only experience is seeing dead relatives at funerals. And from what I recall their skin looked like it had a sheen of gray and dullness over their original deep brown skin tone, even under the makeup. Though depending on how light they were, sometimes they did look a few tones lighter/washed out, so yeah… *shudders* Read up on this subject, search for effects of death on dark skin and avoid images if you don’t wanna see that, perhaps even try to get an interview or chat with someone who works with dead bodies and has first hand experience viewing them, such as a pathologist or mortician.
Dark Skin ‘Paling’ with Sickness
Anonymous said: so i have a scene in a story i’m working on where a black character is injured. i automatically start to write how he looks pale and sick - but with dark skin color, wouldn’t that be different? how would an ill pallor look and be described on someone with dark skin?
"Dark skin" is not very descriptive and means different things to different people so keep that in mind. His brown skin may look more ashen if he’s very ill or lost a lot of blood, but it’d probably be slight (and it depends on individual) plus wouldn’t be a complete change in color but more like effects on the skin tone that would create a duller, lusterless look. Not always the case though as a pallor change isn’t always visible even if they are very sick. You don’t have to rely heavily on skin effects to denote someone is ill, though.
Is he suddenly quieter or speaks with strain in his voice?
Are his eyes closed or tight with pain? Glazed over?
Is he breathless, or breathing less and weaker?
Does his chest heave up and down? Is it uncomfortably still for long moments?
How is he able to move; does he fall or wobble on his feet? Lying on the ground in weakness?
Do his cheeks puff out as if he may vomit? Hands shaky, skin too warm or too cold? Sweating? Shaking?
Aim to illustrate his state without automatically jumping onto showing paleness to denote that. It’s the easy way to show sickness and emotion without doing much work.
Dark Skin ‘Paling’ from Fear
Anonymous asked: I know you’ve discussed POCs and blushing before, but what about turning pale, like when the blood drains from someone’s face if they see something horrifying? For example, my MC has light brown skin. Would there be visible signs of the blood draining from her face, and if so, how much? Thank you so much for your help.
I have a similar answer as the one above. Skin effects aren’t the only way you can show a change in emotion or state of body and it’s become lazy to rely on skin changing to this in storytelling (e.g. embarrassed = character blushes. Character scared = go pale). Yes, there may be visible showings of their light brown skin drained of blood and looking paler. No, it will not be a total change of color that makes them go from say light brown to beige.
What are other ways to physically show shock or fear? Try any of these, courtesy of the Emotion Thesaurus:
A small yelp, gasp, squeal, or scream
Tingling skin
A heavy feeling in the stomach
A stiffening posture, rigid muscles
A sudden coldness (dread) that hits at the core
Reaching up a hand to lightly clasp the throat
Splaying the fingers out in a fan against the breastbone
Pulling books or another object tight against chest
Eyes that water, shine, or form tears
A sudden onset of anger or frustration (swearing, screaming, acting violent)
A shaky voice—soft, halting, disbelieving
Asking simple questions for clarification: who, when, why?
A feeling of disorientation, dizziness, euphoria
A shaky or slow smile that builds as the surprise sinks in
Grabbing someone close by for comfort
Giving a quick bark of laughter
I recommend this book for several more ideas as this only scratches the surfaces of the emotional descriptors it offers not only for "Shock/surprise" but for showing several other emotions.
Gray-Skinned PoC Vampires
Anonymous asked: I have some POC vampires in my story, too. The thing I do is that white vampires have chalk-white skin, and darker skinned vampires have sort of a gray skin, in whatever tone they had when they were alive. Do you think that that’s okay?
In theory, this doesn’t sound too bad to me and seems like a way to signify PoC and skin color. Then I consider how white/pale skin is prided as beauty and associated with such, as well as innocence. Gray skin doesn’t get that association. While paler than normal skin can definitely be a sign of illness, typically fair skin isn’t going to get accusations of sickness.
On the other hand, grayed skin can by a symptom of many illnesses (from anemia to cancer) and isn’t typically an ideal coloring for anyone. It’s also associated with aged, gloominess, etc. Again, not the same case for whiteness. So to do this, you’d have to be careful with how you’re detailing their skin. I’m not sure how you’re depicting white skin to be overall, but just your ask gives me a clue. You describe the white skin in a concise manner (chalk-white) while you describe the dark skin in an offhand way (sort of a gray skin). I would suggest you describe the gray skin in a more concise manner as you do the pale skin. It doesn’t necessarily have to be “Appealing” though if the white skin is described in certain terms I’d like to see the gray skin described in a similar manner.
Modifiers in combination with gray might work just fine “Dark gray, deep gray, light gray, etc.” If you’d like creative descriptions, here are some comparisons. Bear with me; i’ve never had to describe gray skin before!
rain/mist/clouds
silvery
platinum
metallic
pearl
chrome
heather
taupe
zinc
Also note: People of Color come in all shades, tones, and undertones. There are PoC with pale/white skin, whether they’re white-passing or not.
On another note, you can physically denote race and ethnicity through facial features as well.
On a third note! Are these vampires blending in with human society and/or pretending to not be vampires at times? Because while I can see the white-skinned vampires being able to get by undetected, that’d be hard for a gray-skinned vampire. This has its own social implications, and that’s up to you. ~Mod Colette

I have a question that I've been pondering about in my head, and I believe that you're the best person to ask this to. My roleplay is in need of some non-binary characters. Can you use any face claim to play a non-binary character? And also could you list me some of the most popular non-binary/transgender actor/actresses so that I can make sure my roleplay is diverse?
