“My parents split up when I was seven, so my grandmother was the one stable thing in my life. She’d cook me dinner, tuck me in bed, then put on her nurse’s uniform and go to work. She was already 65 by then, but somehow she’d still find the energy to cook me breakfast when she came home. She understood me. We shared secrets. Both of us tended toward melancholy, and she made me feel OK about that. We also had similar weaknesses. Oma put everyone else before herself. My grandfather was abusive and abandoned her. But when he got cancer in his old age, she told him: ‘Come back home Joe, I’ll take care of you.’ She nursed him until he died. That’s the kind of person she was. Christmas was always a huge deal for her. It was the main reason she kept working. She’d save up all year for it. Each of her grandkids would get twenty presents, and they’d be stacked to the ceiling. Unfortunately her health was never great because she smoked her entire life. And when I visited her in December of 2017, she was in horrible shape. She couldn’t walk more than a few steps without gasping for air. I remember carrying her up the stairs and putting her to bed. I read her books from my childhood. And she hated every minute of it, I’m sure. Because she hated being cared for. When our time was finished, and I was walking out the door, she told me: ‘Nick, I love you so much. And please don’t tell anyone, but this is the last time you’re going to see me.’ I cried the entire way to the airport. And three days later she died. It was the week before Christmas. My entire family flew to her house for the funeral, and there were tons of presents, for every child and grandchild, perfectly wrapped and placed under the tree. But I was too heartbroken to go. And I think she anticipated that. Because on December 23rd I received a package. It was postmarked the day that she died. Inside was a bottle of holy water, a rosary, and a card that said: ‘Right now you probably feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, and it’s going to come crashing down. But keep going. We all have a purpose in life. And one of the reasons you are here was to bring some happiness into mine.’”

it’s extremely kind of you to call my rambly post about annabeth the megalodon conspiracy theorist “literary analysis” but you have FLATTERED me! i’ll just........ ramble a bit about percabeth i love them lol. i’m ignoring HoO tho just because the curse of achilles is so significant for them and i’m offended that it was just washed away, and this is me being petty
one thing that’s pretty significant is that percy and annabeth are best friends first. it always fucks me up that break up fics involve percy and annabeth not speaking to each other again, because, no, no, no. love is complicated. you can love someone with everything you have in you and never want a romantic relationship. you can love someone with everything you have in you, want a romantic relationship, and then later you might not want that romance anymore; i can see percy and annabeth not being together forever, because honestly they get together at 16, immediately after a war, and up until that point in time they have spent a lot of time together in near-death situations. there’s probably going to be times in their life where romance is just not their thing. maybe they want to explore other relationships. maybe they wanted to see how they work without the dating label. but i don’t ever see them not being friends, even in a situation where they broke up and it involved messy feelings, they are still going to be friends. end of. i think a lot of the mischaracterization of percabeth comes from the fact that once percy and annabeth get together, people tend to ignore that they still meant an astronomical amount to each other before that, that their platonic relationship wasn’t fueled by romantic interest initially. percy can be annabeth’s “something permanent”, and annabeth can percy’s tether to life, without them ever getting together. the romance is an added bonus. the romance is because they’re teens who want to date. percy and annabeth have turned out to be pretty romantically-inclined people. but it’s not key.
i know a lot of people think it’s awkward, being friends with someone you used to date, or that it’s awkward to be friends with someone you still kind of want to date but won’t because they’re not into it right now; i know a lot of people think the easiest answer is to run away from a situation like that, to cut off contact and move on. but relationships hit different when you forge them in combat. before percy and annabeth even really liked being around each other, they were putting their lives in each other’s hands. i cannot stress ENOUGH how huge a factor it is in how percy and annabeth work, the fact that they were back-to-back in battle before anything else; even when they’re on the rocks between BOTL and TLO, i can promise you there is not a second that percy doesn’t trust annabeth with his life, and vice versa. and relationships work differently when they’re exposed to that kind of mortal stress. things can be awkward between them sometimes and it’s not going to ruin what they have, because when you’ve come close to losing someone, when you’ve been the thing standing between them and certain death, when they’ve been the only thing that’s kept you alive, that’s real shit. every symbol of percy and annabeth’s connection - the gray streaks, percy’s mortal point, the scar annabeth has from taking a knife to protect him - has been life-or-death. the major developments in their relationship are ushered forward by life-or-death situations. there’s not a lot you can do to break the kind of faith people have in each other after shared trauma like that.
i know people have criticized annabeth being percy’s tether to mortality when he’s bathing in the styx, because it’s “fanservice” and unnecessary romance - but i promise you that’s not romance. i promise you that’s percy recognizing that annabeth has been his literal tether to life, as the person who has saved his ass the most out of anyone else in the world, as the person he trusts more than anyone else to have his back in a fight. a common criticism is that it should’ve been sally - but sally isn’t the one that’s been hauling percy’s ass out of the fire since he was 12, and in fact, the one major life-or-death situation he was in with his mother, percy thought she had died. i’m not saying sally isn’t responsible for percy being alive, because of course she is, she’s his mom - but the way percy processes “mother who feeds me” and “best friend who takes a knife for me” is going to be radically different. if percy’s in immediate mortal danger, he’s not going to call sally, he’s going to call annabeth. i love percy and sally, i really do, but their bond isn’t do-or-die the way percy and annabeth’s is. that doesn’t make sally any less important in percy’s life, of course, because guess what the kinds of relationships you have with people can be different and still important. it’s..... pretty natural for percy to be about to disintegrate permanently and for the thing that saves him to be annabeth. that is the thing percy and annabeth do for each other, over and over and over, condensed into one singular moment in time. i cannot emphasize enough how important it is to percy and annabeth’s dynamic that they spend so much time together running for their lives.
my brutally hot, hotter-than-the-surface-of-the-sun take is that fanon percabeth would be more in character and more juicy if shipping fandoms were all-around better at valuing platonic relationships. percabeth dynamic is “best friends for life but we kiss sometimes” not “people who were always interested in each other romantically.” there’s nothing wrong with the latter, of course, it’s just not how percy and annabeth function in canon. but shipping fandom in any fandom is generally very bad about valuing romance and platonic relationships equally. i am maybe bitter about the amount of percabeth fics i’ve read that actively scorn the idea of them being friends, okay? it’s the fucking bedrock of their relationship, i will not be tolerating disrespect of baby ickle bffs percy and annabeth who EMAIL EACH OTHER WHEN NOT AT CAMP AKFSLHLKGHSGSHG
i could waffle on and on about how percy is the person that, for the first time in annabeth’s life, chooses her. chooses to be around her, chooses to be friends with her, actively pisses off athena just to keep being around her, shuns immortality because he looks at annabeth. i think one of the most significant and underrated moments in the series between them is in SOM, when annabeth listens to the sirens and percy dives in to save her - and annabeth is sobbing and percy just holds her, and he even tells the curious sea life to fuck off. annabeth has been punched in the gut by her desperation to fix everything wrong with her life, her desperation to somehow win back all of the people who have abandoned her - she got to live, for a moment, a fantasy world where no one had hurt her. she’s fucking thirteen, that’s goddamn brutal. it’s a very poignant moment because the thing about to kill annabeth - her need for something permanent - is also the thing that saves her, and percy just comforts her at the bottom of the ocean, like the sweet young man he is. if you can’t stan the underwater crying hug you don’t deserve the underwater kiss. but other people have said this better than me.
i just remembered while writing this that annabeth is percy’s second friend in his entire life and i had other percabeth points to make but my brain has shut down. shut the fuck up. how is this kid demonstrably one of the nicest characters in the series, even if he has a temper and a vengeful streak, and he didn’t have two friends until he was almost 13. shut the fuck up. i’m so...... what the fuck.
