Chapter 28: Die For You
The steady rhythm of the beeping tone in the room resembled a heartbeat the longer Nora listened to it. A release of air would rush from the pump in the ventilator, and the illuminated digits on one of the screens would flash as zigzagging lines formed across the cardiac monitor. Every beep, pump of air, and pattern on the screen came in succession, and his chest would rise slowly; the only movement in the room besides hers as she swallowed and then stepped forward. His face looked more peaceful than she was ever able to remember. There were no lines of distress on his forehead, and his jaw was relaxed, despite the breathing tube in his mouth. Nora stopped at his bedside, and then lowered herself onto the edge of the hospital bed. Her hand hesitated before she reached for his, taking care not to disturb the IV line running into a port a few inches above his knuckles that had healed. “Karim…” Her voice cracked, and she took a deep breath before she tried speaking again. “I don’t know if you can hear me.” “But I need you to wake up. I want you to wake up, and get better. I do,” she stammered in a whisper as tears blurred her eyes. “You can start over. You can be free from - ” She was stunned into silence when she saw his eyelids move. The subtle twitch seemed so foreign in the stillness around it. “What… what’s happening?” she uttered, and then she felt another foreign sensation. Karim’s hand squeezed around hers, and her eyes went wide. “Oh my god, Karim,” she sputtered as she covered her mouth with her free hand, and then looked around frantically before she found the emergency call button and yelled for help. She watched his eyelids unveil the onyx of his irises staring back at her. She froze for a second when she saw the flash of something familiar in his eyes, something she had almost forgotten was there in the confines of the hospital room, and in the depths of his coma. Nora gasped hoarsely when his arm shot out towards her, and his fingers curled around her neck, tightening over her throat until air was scarce. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t scream.

Chapter 27: No One Man Should Have All That Power
Karim couldn’t hear his own voice over the million others echoing in his head. They told him she was a liar. She’d lied to him to buy herself time, lied to him to save Jalen. The voices told him the same thing they always did; that he was no different than his father. And now they told him that the two people in front of him deserved what was coming to them. A louder tenor told him he couldn’t live in a world without her, or a world where another man had her. And that only meant one thing. He felt his limbs being pulled in four directions at once, but his gun remained aimed forward. Nora was frozen into a statue in front of him, and Jalen sat to the right of her, shackled, with every muscle in his body tensed; waiting. Karim shut his eyes so tight it became painful, and then he screamed in agony. He lowered the gun, then gripped both sides of his head, trying to drown out the voices so he could hear his own just one more time.

Chris sat across from Sherita like they had done many times after they were done with their notes and he took a deep sigh as they ate their blue candy.
“Excited for your birthday??”
He gave her a blank look and she giggled to herself.
“Let me do a read back. Carolina building, final meeting update with Farmers, call Andie for your official building walk through, inspection meeting with Jamal when you come back from your birthday vacation with Lyd.”
“Sounds good.”
“Are you excited?” Sherita asked wistfully and Chris broke into a partial smile.
“Yeah, it’s gonna be cool with just us two.”
Sherita reached over and grabbed some candy. “Ooh, how was your meeting with Gio the other day??”
“..Productive.”
“How’s he doin?” She asked worriedly and Chris loosened his tie.
“As in what?”
“Y'know,” Sherita flung her hand. “With rehab and everything else. Scottie said-”
“OH LORD.”
“Shut up! Scottie said it makes sense he was on something, that explains why he wasn’t healing up good. Anyways, how is he?”
“I been meaning to talk to you about that..” Chris sighed, getting up. He slipped his jacket on and picked up a Sour Punch Straw, letting it dangle from his mouth. “You fired.”

Extra.
Sherita sat in her car with the heat blaring out on her while raindrops tapped her car. She watched anxiously through the windshield after 20 minutes and saw a old gold Camry pull up to a parking spot. She rushed and grabbed the bag with two cheesesteaks and large bag of fries, rushing out of the car when she saw Scottie in his black and white striped shirt, hurrying to his apartment complex door.
“Scottie!!”
He turned and squinted through the rain, kissing his teeth while flipping through his keys.
“What?”
Sherita’s stomach flip flopped at his brash answer and yelled over, “Uh… I was just in the neighborhood, that’s all.”
“Yeah? You like it?” He asked sarcastically and found his door key.
“Scottie please, wait, I’m sorry!” She said, walking up the ramp through puddles. He looked her over and went back to sticking his key in the door.
“Thanks, I guess.”
“What do you mean?!”
“NOT THIS SHIT AGAIN.” He sighed in frustration and Sherita shook her wet head.
“No, I mean, will you take me back?? I’m sorry about me flipping out, Marvin was right.. As much as it hurts to say that.”
Scottie looked over to his shoulder confused. “What he say?”
“That I’m scared.”
“Of what?!” He gestured. “Of ME??”
“Yeah! Cuz I see Robyn and Chris and they love each other so much, and she’s so pretty and kept up, I don’t think I can be like that, I’m not like that.”
“Sherita, what you sayin don’t make sense. I wasn’t dating Mrs. Brown, I’m tryna date YOU!” Scottie said with exasperation. “I know you not like her! I like that you like simple things, you don’t care about where I work or the car I drive, you not like these other girls out here.”
“But-”
“Ain’t no but, I’m grown and so are you. Shouldn’t be no insecurities if we like each other. If I tried to talk to you, it’s cuz I really like you.”
“For real?”
“Yeah!!”
Sherita blinked when the thick rain hit her face as Scottie gave her a tired shrug and she thought to herself.
“..Did you eat yet?” She asked shyly and he shook his head no.
“I’m not really hungry though. Catch you later.” He answered back with an attitude and clicked the front door open; Sherita stood in the rain dumbfounded as he slammed the door closed. It cracked back open and he smirked at her, Sherita pouting while she tried to stop smiling.
“C'mere.”
“You got my eyelashes falling off!” She laughed, walking to the door he held open and she got on her toes to give him a kiss. He broke away, biting his bottom lip at her and caught some of the drips that rolled off of her chin with his finger.
“Gotta get you these wet clothes.”
Sherita blushed and giggled while Scottie said over his shoulder, walking to his apartment, “Let’s talk inside. You brought food for me too??”
“Yeah-”
“You ain’t bring no drinks?!”

One Week.
Chris frowned deeply at the watercolor painting sitting on the wall of the therapist’s office as he waited for her. The door swung open and he shifted his eyes over to the entrance, seeing his therapist stroll in.
“Hi Chris.”
“Hey.” He answered dully.
“How are you?” She asked breathlessly while plopping into a chair and he shrugged roughly.
“How has your first week been on your own?”
Chris rubbed his thumb against the suede seat and kept frowning.
“Okay.. Let’s start with easy questions. Where did you grow up?”
Chris kept silent and his eyes down at the spot he rubbed against until Hardaway cleared her throat.
“Something wrong?”
“How did I get into this psychoanalysis bullshit?? I don’t wanna do this.”
“Okay.”
He furrowed his brows, flicking his eyesight back up and said, “What you mean okay??”
Hardaway gestured to the door, “You’re free to go at any time.”
“How can you say that??? Aren’t you supposed to encourage me to stay?!”
“Chris, I’m only here to listen, if you don’t wanna talk, then by all means..”
“You know if I leave, I’ll get divorce papers!” Chris snapped and Hardaway peered over the rim of her glasses.
“Then how about you stop bitching and we’ll start the session?”
Chris sat in surprise and the doctor smirked at him. He laughed lightly to himself and took a deep breath, sitting back against the plush seat. “Aight, I’m sorry. So.. What do we do?”
Dr. Hardaway opened her leather bound notebook and uncapped her pen.
“Talk.”

TARIN
Linens surrounded me.
Samples of lace tablecloths many would only pull out for special occasions dangled from the ceiling inside the gaudy alcove. On the ground floor of an impressively curated Brooklyn furniture and home decor store, the urge to scream had never been so prevalent–so dire–as it was at the moment.
My finger trembled above the iPhone’s touchscreen; a familiar sinking sensation coursed through my stomach upon further reading an email sent to me by Cheyenne.
What I assumed to be a follow up regarding logistics for a nail polish launch Cara and I were planning together, turned out to be nothing of the sort. Rather than receiving an overview of the client’s outlandish yet probable vision, one lone link was sent to my inbox; in the subject field, a capitalized ‘HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?’ caught my eye previous to me scrolling further. Without bothering to compose a reply that questioned what the link pertained to, I opened the link and was immediately rerouted to a gossip site I frequented in my spare time, through the phone’s web browser.
I grew tense from the cryptic headline alone.
Below the sensationalized text, photos leading up to my least proudest moment to date managed to find their way into the possession of a blogger based out in Los Angeles. Equipped with a comment section that made the average joe feel diligent, I had been warned by Cheyenne that the site had been lagging periodically due to a substantial amount of site-traffic.

Chapter 24: Tangle
Emilia’s was peering at her computer screen, and the soft knocks at her doorframe did nothing to distract her as Julian lingered in the hallway before coming in. “Close the door,” she said without looking up, summoning him in with an impatient gesture. Julian pulled the door shut, and shuffled into the chair opposite her desk. “I figured you haven’t eaten all day,” he said as he placed a brown paper bag in front of her, still apprehensive of the lines she’d drawn between them. “Thanks,” she managed a weak smile, and pulled the bag aside without peeking inside like she usually would. She looked completely drained, but he refrained from asking, knowing he would only encounter more resistance. “This is our John Doe from this morning,” she said as she pulled a photograph from a numbered case file and leaned over her desk to place it in front of him. “Kane Carter. Cause of death: single gunshot wound to the chest. Collapsed lung. Fired at close range. But probably not close enough for any blood splatter on the shooter.” “I put a rush on forensics and this is what came back. The bullet is from a Glock 19. Trace marking evidence on the bullet suggests it could have gone through a suppressor,” she explained as she placed a report over the photograph. “No prints in the apartment, but it wasn’t wiped clean. Victim’s prints were still everywhere. Nothing on the door, or door knob. Our shooter had gloves on,” she went on, and then pointed to another page. “Kane Carter was in our system. Was in and out of prison until his last stint 20 years ago. Credit card fraud. Couple of assault charges. Drug charges never stuck. Possibly cooperated with the DA and took a deal. He’s been off the radar since.” Julian’s confusion built the longer he listened to her describe what sounded like the average repeat-offender-turned snitch, wondering why Emilia was even remotely interested in a killing they dealt with on a weekly basis - the kind that usually went in the books as unsolved. And then the answer came. “Oh and, he’s my step father,” she finished as she pulled the documents back to her end of the desk, and Julian looked up at her. It was the first mention of her past he’d ever heard, and his eyes widened as he shifted in his seat. “You can’t work on this,” he said reflexively, his cop half speaking first. “The department discourages anyone from working on family-related cases.” “I’m fine. And Kane’s not family,” Emilia snipped, and he stared back at her. He saw the redness framing her eyelids, and the puffiness beneath her eyes, and a million questions formed at the tip of his tongue. “I want to do this, Julian. I need this,” she urged, her brown eyes pleading with him in ways she couldn’t voice just yet. He let out a shallow sigh, and lifted himself from the chair for a moment to take the case file back into his hands. He stared down at the dated booking photograph of the man he’d seen deceased early that morning, and then looked back up at Emilia. “What do you need me to do?” he asked soberly, leaning into the back of the chair. “I need you to help me find my mother,” she said without emotion, and then reached for the bag of food he’d brought her.

Chapter 23: Close To You (Part 2)
Julian listened for any sign of life behind the door he stood in front of, waiting for a response to his series of knocks. When he heard only silence, he began chastising himself for not calling before showing up. The other half of him quickly countered, assuring himself that a call would have only earned himself the opposite of an invitation. So there he was, lifting his fist up to Winter’s door again, until he heard the long-awaited shuffle of footsteps, and the sound of a deadbolt sliding open before a gap appeared in the door. “Hi,” he nervously licked over his lips as Winter tipped her head up to look at him. He was in full uniform, and a gold and blue enamel numbered shield was displayed over the left breast-pocket of his dark blue shirt. “I don’t remember calling 911,” Winter said, and his shoulders dropped in relief when a smile crept to her lips. “We didn’t really get to talk the other night, I just wanted to check on you,” he said, and she stepped aside, ushering him into the loft. Half of her braids were piled up into a bun on top of her head, and the rest hung loose over the oversized sweater she was snuggled into. “I thought of going to Empire at first, but I didn’t think I’d find you there,” Julian admitted as he balanced against the arm of her couch and she hopped up onto the kitchen island, letting her bare feet hang above the floor. “I guess you were right,” she shrugged one shoulder, looking down at the rose gold nail polish painted onto her toe nails. “Plus, you’re not really allowed back there.” “Civilian Julian isn’t allowed back in the club,” he smirked, and then tapped his badge with two fingers. “But I’ll bet you they let this guy in.” “So there’s two of you,” she snipped sarcastically, raising both eyebrows at him. “Isn’t there two of you? Or is it three now? I can’t really keep up,” he shot back, but his features quickly softened when he saw her lips part at the abrasive response. “Win, I didn’t come here to argue with you,” he said before she could throw back a retort. “I came to understand.” She waited for him to go on, placing both hands at her sides, and crossing one leg over the other as she saw him shifting his weight uncomfortably. “What is it that you want to understand?” she asked, and Julian moved towards the island, pulling out a stool to sit in, and propping his elbows up onto the counter only inches away from where she sat. “I get your conflict with your parents,” he said as she settled her hands into her lap and uncrossed her legs. “And I get that you don’t want their help. I get that you want your independence from them, and being financially reliant on them only keeps that dependence alive.” “But there’s so many other things you could be doing - “ he went on, and she scoffed before interrupting him. “Please, don’t give me that lecture,” she held her hand up, but his voice overpowered hers.
