Intro

Hey all! I'm Uni and I write (and read) wildly in fandoms.

For all WIPs that already have at least one chapter on Ao3, I tag those using the title in posts where I share writing progress.

Prompts, prompt-fills, and fic ideas are collected under the tag #uni writes.

Pod-together is a fandom fest where writers and podficcers create together—the writer creating text specifically intended for audio, and the podficcer creating the audio. If that sounds fun to you, sign-ups are open until June 13th! 

Sign-ups come in two flavors. If you would like the mods to match you with someone with similar fandom interests, sign up for Matchmaker Sign-Ups. If you would like to sign up with a partner, we also have Group Sign-Ups.

The minimum length for pod-together projects is 1000 words or 10 minutes of audio. Writing is due July 26th, and podfic is due August 23rd.

This is our 16th year running this challenge, and participants usually have a ton of fun and create amazing stuff, with everything from the typical style of fanfics to submissions with filk, poetry, sound effects, massive multi-voice collaborations, immersive soundscapes, playable games, radio broadcasts, and full-cast musicals.

Fic rec! 4K Batman

Summary: Bruce wakes with a snort and a crick in his neck. Tim is still dead weight across his legs. Bruce can feel a damp patch on his sweatpants where he’s drooled on him.

Bruce digs his phone out of his pocket, careful not to disturb him.

4:32am.

Fuck.

Tim was due to be woken up for a concussion check over three hours ago.

“Tim,” he murmurs, rough with sleep. “Wake up, bud.” He shakes him gently.

Tim’s head lolls.

Comments: Welcome to the Bruce panic hour, where he skips straight from Alfred to Leslie, who then tells him to skip her and go right to 911. Angst and worry all around because Tim is not okay. (but he is at the end)

And this story is done! I'll let it sit overnight, then edit and hopefully publish tomorrow. It's been nearly 6 months in the making; it needs to find its place on Ao3. While the first fic is called Gotham's Faith, I'm leaning toward calling this one Gotham's Future. For obvious reasons.

It's all further evidence of how Tim's built skills and a life and a reputation without them, forced by both his parents and unstable Wayne dynamics to be too independent. Jason should be glad that Tim reached out for help.

Still, it nags at him like burrs in his socks that Tim didn't rely on his brothers like Jason wishes three years, five years too late. He can't go back and fix his relationship with Tim. He can't see a path forward where he can be a big brother either, not the kind that protects him from bullies and gives life advice. The moment's gone, slipped between his fingers. Dick's too.

Tim is Gotham's future, looming like a tidal wave. The realization will flood the city soon, and there's nothing Dick or Jason can do to hold it off.

Red Robin will stop the cartel from gaining a foothold. The other gangsters in the city will notice, not just Red Robin's work but also the cartel's dismissal of Batman.

Hero. CEO. Philanthropist. Socialite. Every single one of those spotlights are on Tim, and they're about to get brighter as Bruce's fade.

Fic rec! 22K Batman case fic.

Summary: "Alright, asshole," says Jason and plunks a folder down directly on the keyboard of Tim's laptop. "I'm calling in that IOU."

Tim doesn't startle, not visibly. But all at once there's a batarang in his hand, the blade gleaming sharp. It takes him a second to register who the intruder actually is before he gives Jason a lingering, suspicious sidelong glance and tucks it away again.

"What IOU?" says Tim. "And how'd you get in here?"

Comments: Amazing case fic story that puts Jason and Tim in a blender (or freezer to be more accurate) and they come out beat up but also better brothers. Poor Tim gets the worse of it, and Jason’s a little pissed on his behalf to chastise Dick, but it ends with..not warm fuzzies because Tim and Jason would never admit to it. But yeah, warm fuzzies

Fic rec! 2.5K Batman Angst featurine Tim 

Summary: Tim gets a text inviting him to celebrate Damian. On July 19th. It has to be a coincidence. There’s no way his family would throw him a surprise party for his 18th birthday. He won’t get his hopes up and he’ll support Damian like a good brother would. Except he does get his hopes up. Like an idiot.

Comments: Heavy on the angst here for those looking. Dick throws a party for Damain, completely overlooking Tim’s birthday, and Tim keeps mum while struggling. Bruce figures it out, but nothing good comes of it, which is absolutely heartbreaking and serves as an official nail in the childhood coffin for Tim. No comfort here for miles around.

Fic rec! 12K Batman

Summary: Tim gets caught in a Scarecrow attack as a civilian. He wakes up and figures out that his family is trying to kill him.

Comments: This is super well done. Tim doesn’t hallucinate; his mind just twists to see the worst version of his family and they don’t do much to disuade him. And while we as a reader know what’s going on, we can’t really blame Tim because his fears - that eveyone is betraying him - are on that edge of rational and irrational. He’s thinking, planning, even if he’s running on the wrong fuel type. It’s a different type of fear, and I love the thought of fear gas not just making one hallucinate but intensifying phobias you already have.

Fic rec! 57K Batman fic

Summary: The problem is that Tim’s spent the past month or so slowly getting murdered. (AKA, An AU where Jason never went to Ethiopia, and Tim takes a different road home to the Waynes.)

Comment: When Tim’s parents die, there’s a fight over who takes him in because while his parents gave the majority of their wealth to Tim, they didn’t specify who gets Tim. Important - because if Tim dies before 18 it’s his caretaker who gets the cash.

It doesn’t take Tim very long to realize his uncle’s trying to kill him, but proving it, even with Batman and Robin’s help, is not easy. Tim is very determined to help though, even if it means putting himself in danger and oh, does this bean do that. Alfred is very prepared to save the day.

Behind every gay person is a gayer, more evil gay person

The reason that I fell in love with Rocky as a character, as a physics student, was during Grace's first in-person meeting with him, and there is just one small area of clear material that Grace is able to look through.

I can't remember where I first saw this information, but apparently Rocky's aim was to make the wall to the tunnel out of many different materials to find out which one Grace is able to see through easiest, not based on opacity - like a human or something that evolved to see light does - but based on acoustic impedance. For anyone who doesn't know what that is, it's a way of measuring how easily sound passes through a material - usually used in ultrasound scans. Therefore, for a species who uses echo-location, he's working out which material is easiest for Grace to see through - and from what I can tell he just got lucky with the clear Xenonite. I'm also fairly sure that he was completely unaware about species that see through light waves rather than echo-location, based on his reactions to Grace in the movie.

Basically, Rocky wanted to make things as accessible as he could for any alien that he could come across with the limited knowledge that he had of how different species see things. He is essentially setting himself up to be as accessible as he can for anyone he could possible meet out there. Whether its due to desperation for connection, or just because he's Like That, that's why I think he's so neat. His first interaction with Grace is just him trying to make Grace as comfortable as possible.

everyone talks about how strong and great Aragorn was for refusing the ring when Frodo offered it to him as if this man has not spent his entire life dodging leadership and responsibilities like bullets in the matrix 🙄

thinking about eva stratt crafting a coffin for her friends. the very best coffin, full of every piece of pirated media the entire world has to offer. crafted for maximum comfort, this coffin, with every bit of authority available to her, which is all of it.

and then thinking about all the people who call her cold or uncaring or clinical about what she has to do to save earth. eva stratt, who had silly t-shirts and vodka and favorite meals stored in the Hail Mary and treated with the same level of importance as the finely tuned equipment and the centrifuge the entire planet relies on for salvation.

and then thinking about eva stratt nodding and saying, “yeah, I’m pretty awful. that’s why i’m in charge” with a neutral expression and even believing it. as if crafting the most beautiful coffin and homage to her soon-to-be dead friends won’t haunt her always.

thinking about eva stratt being the first person on the “eva stratt is a monster” train, welcoming ryland grace aboard and knowing she believed in him more than anyone else.

it’s fine, really it’s fine and normal and eva stratt makes beautiful coffins for the people and things she cares about.

After making it to the final round of three anthologies but not being selected, it's time to just publish this story solo. My queer cozy scifi tale must be shared! 🚀✨🫂🏳️‍🌈

I don't typically publish short stories solo, but at 7K, this one is getting special treatment, even if that means a very short blurb. Which one captures your attention more?

Joos is Choclet’s ride-or-die, even if that means stealing an escape pod from their ex-crew of pirates to find safer stars to live and work among. They might have found it among a small repair crew, but being chased down by their old pirate captain puts their new home at risk.

When Choclet's kleptomania risks her place on their pirate crew, Joos shoves her in an escape pod and crawls in after. The ship that picks them up is a fresh start, but being chased down by their ex-crew for one last item threatens their hope of ever finding a place to belong.

Instead of letting her fellow space pirates harm Choclet, Joos flees with her best friend. The small ship of people who pick them up is kind, but Choclet's convinced it's only a matter of time before she lands them crewless and homeless again. Especially once their old pirate crew comes to collect the escape pod they stole.

Which blurb is most interesting?
