āWith the new day comes new strength and new thoughtsā Eleanor Roosevelt (at Harrison, New Jersey)
On my walk from the train station... #newjob #newday #coldasf (at Rutgers University New Brunswick)
Starting my new job today. Not a bad beginning to the morning. Itās just 12 degrees out ššš eventually Iāll get the timing downāuntil then I can enjoy the view. #newjob #traincommute #coldasf #newyearnewme (at Penn Station Newark New Jersey)
Christmas Carols, generated by a neural network
Neural networks are a type of computer program that imitate the way that brains learn to solve problems. Theyāre used for face recognition, self-driving cars, language translation, financial decisions, and more. I mainly use them to write humor.
My process starts with a dataset - something that the neural network has to figure out how to imitate. Rather unfairly, I give itĀ no instructions about whether itās trying to write knock-knock jokes or invent Halloween costumes or begin a novel. It doesnāt even have any built-in knowledge of English. It definitely doesnāt have any clue what Christmas carols are, which is why this weekās experiment was so much fun.
The Times of London teamed up with reader/neural net hobbyist Erik Svensson to collect a mix of ancient and modern carols, about 240 carols in all, fromĀ āWhat Child is This?ā toĀ āGrandma Got Run Over by a Reindeerā.
When the neural network begins learning, it starts with a set of random rules about how to put one letter after another to make a Christmas carol. Since they are random, they are terrible rules, and when the neural network tries to apply them, it gets junk:
a Ā Ā a a na snn aca naa Ā i Ā Ā Ā s Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā a Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā i aa a a Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā n a Ā uugna Ā nn na Ā Ā i Ā Ā Ā a Ā uaa Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā a Ā a Ā Ā i Ā a Ā Ā a Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā a Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā a a Ā Ā sna aagt o aaĀ
But it can check its rules against the real songs in its database and then make little tweaks to them that make them work slightly better. It learns to capitalize the first word of a line, it learns how often to do line breaks⦠and soon it begins to learn actual words - the most common ones first.
Hart fon the be the he br wong on the stor Christmas br he, or the wang Christ, Christ, on bn a me the stord Hont on thr st bong the wor I he a s de poog the stow tome on be ser snur
After the neural network has spent many more rounds refining its rules, it begins to look a lot like Christmas.
Now, neural networks tend to pick up tone and vocabulary pretty easily, but struggle with making sense. So, the carol-trained neural network learned to produce a lot of lines that sound - well, joyful, at least.
The cattle around the Christmas will be A very special Christmas with me
Hurry Christmas to you
Cup on the earth!
Still the loudly candlelight Would praise His name.
The babe, the Son of Mary. He sumbled their flowers and all.
The lord of the glory dawns Give us the leave all away A star is spent and red Shake a cup a strend from the sky Christmas is coming, the wind is come to you
Walkinā him love, Dingle bells, jingle bells, jingle bells with bells are ringing
With a heart reindeer But no more a stranger. Santa baby, and Dancer, and Curry down
Happy Holiday When the snowflakes will call the world wakes to bring Glory bears and asses the air the angels sang And Christmas tree
(Curry is not in the input data. Nor is Dingle. The neural net likes to invent words that it thinks sound sort of carol-y)
Other carols it generated sounded a bit more morose.
The fire is sleeping. And crying, Love love What a King
Letās take the little children of the grave!
For some reason, the Sandman figures very prominently in the neural netās Christmas mythology, despite having been mentioned in the dataset only once. Sometimes the neural net latches on to particular words for no reason I can see. Maybe itās a Neil Gaiman fan.
The sandman so be joyful now it was born today! Gloria in excelsis Deo.
The sandman bright before Him. The holly bears a berry bears And star in the snow is born today!
The sandman so love to seek the world
The sandman so love so deep and sing and the sun
And this? In retrospect, I should have seen this coming:
The world and joy of the sleigh Santa baby bore sweet Jesus Christ
The holly bears a berry, And all the reindeer of the sky
The holly bears a berry and reindeer He was born today!
And Santa baby bore sweet Jesus Christ, And the chimney the angels sing.
When the snowman brings the snow Christmas tree Letās take that road before And Santa Claus comes tonight He will bring us goodness and light
Santa baby, a blitzen, And he was the sun and reindeer and earth. The Saviour of the chimney tonight
The story of the chimney see Santa baby, and blood and joyous so world and joy and good will to see Santa baby bore sweet Jesus Christ Fa la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la.
King of toys and hippopotamuses [sic] full of the light of that stood at the dear Son of Santa Claus He was born in a wonderful christmas tree
Run, run Rudolph, run, run Rudolph, run, run Rudolph, run, run Rudolph, run, run Rudolph, run, run Rudolph, run, run Rudolph, run, run Rudolf the new born King.
The neural network also produced a few lines that, um, strained the bounds of good taste. If you want to read them, sign up here and Iāll send them to you.
@insertcaffeine ššš Curry Down!
Look at da babies!
@unic0rnthe0ry, BABY ANIMALS.Ā This is not a drill.
@insertcaffeine literally me right now
is the fiber and goodness from my morning oatmeal offset by the truly devastating amounts of brown sugar i add to it? or does it balance out?
hahahahaĀ ātruly devastating amounts of brown sugarā is the only way to have brown sugar in my book. Itās actually not too bad calorie-wise⦠enjoy your brown sugar, my love!
If youāre concerned about the sugar content, throw a squishy brown banana in there as your sweetener!Ā (Is delicious, can confirm)
āAdded sugarā is where things get sticky. When I make my own oatmeal I make sure to add protein powder, and then I add Splenda brown sugar blend. It has about half the calories that regular brown sugar does. Now a serving size is about 1/2 a tbsp so depending on what you mean is a ādevastatingā amount. As long as you ok with artificial sweeteners...

TV Show Pitch
@insertcaffeine I need your help pitching a TV show. For #inktober maybe you could do some storyboards? Itās a Buddy-Cop comedy called āDonāt Question The Fuzzā. It will star your Dog Momo and our Cat Peach. They show up to crime scenes. Since neither one quite understands anything they will just look around all confused with question marks populating around their heads. I think itās a sure fire hit!
Dog does not understand
Totally a @unic0rnthe0ry thing.
@insertcaffeine dogs are always so polite. Ā Cats, well they have agendas. Ā

Good Morning Story
Lately I have been having a hard time falling asleep due to chronic sciatica pain. Ā Last night I decide to write my amazining husband an email that he could read when he woke up. Ā He is a a doctor in the first year of his OB/GYN residency. Ā I think it is hilarious and wanted to share it. Ā
Ahh itās now morning and time for you to wake up. Itās beautiful out!
Sadly, itās been a long week. Ā Be careful it is chilly today. Resist the temptation to hop back in to bed. Ā
You remember it is coffee time, and things are starting to perk up a bit. Ā
Now that you are kind of awake you should thinking about some breakfast.Ā
One more sip of coffee and then it is time to get ready!
Put on some finishing touches so you look all super handsome when you get to work!
Uh oh time is tickingābetter get out that door!
Carefully drive yourself to work. Ā Also, this is a 13/10 good boy!
Walk in from the car. Make sure you look super professional you never know who you might run in to.
Then go be the amazing doctor that you are! You are awesome, amazing, and talented. Ā I am so glad I get to share you with all the patients! xxoo
his name is basil
@insertcaffeine Security Guard Basil needs to you to step to the side. You have been randomly selected to give him pets and scratchies.
Yesterday at the foster clinic there was a woman with a litter of tiny, tiny kittens, one of whom was a beautiful orange and white creamsicle. Ā I told her,Ā āI love orange boy cats, they are all so stupid.ā and the foster mom said to me, with tears of love in her eyes, face glowing with maternal pride,Ā āHe is only 6 days old and I can already tell that heās going to be so stupid!ā
@unic0rnthe0ry, for some reason, this made me think of you and Peacho.
He is so stupid. Ā And it is so adorable.
@insertcaffeine I know! He tries so hard and fails constantly. We all love him so much though and are always surprised he survived being an outdoor cat until just a few years ago.
