A small shadow passed over the forest as a feline fairy searched for any suspicious wanderers. She flew over a part of the woods that opened up into a field of tall overgrowth. A path of parted grass and wildflowers made it obvious that someone had been through here and led her in the direction of a village she was unfamiliar with.
Not wanting to get too close, she landed along the trees that lined the village and watched some of the busy people as they herded goats, carried buckets of water here and there, and traded supplies with their neighbors.
Cynfi’s tail gave a quick flick and the bell tied to it rang loudly, causing a few people to look in her direction.
She held her breath, wondering if they’d attack her like a pack of wolves or go about their business.
After a few words had been exchanged, they seemed to have gone back to what they were doing.
The fairy “princess” nodded, deciding that they did not appear to be thieves and walked along the line of trees around to the other side of the forest. Unfolding her wings quietly, she took to the skies again to follow any sign of movement on her hunt.
She yawned, thinking it odd that the area had become dark so early. The storm clouds overhead seemed to race her as they blocked out the sun and rolled over the forest before she even noticed what was happening.
Her right ear twitched as a large droplet hit her ear from behind, causing her to shudder. Cynfi’s head snapped around as she shot an ugly look to the sky and the nasty clouds that seemed to leer back at her.
“Don’t you dare!” Cynfi ordered to the oncoming storm, though it was too late. A thick shower was already heading her way.
The curtain of water hit her hard and she was forced to land in the forest below.
With her wings soaked, she leaped from the coverage of tree to tree before finding a thick Oak with an ingrown knot hollowing out the trunk.
The feline fairy tucked herself into the warm and dry tree, looking sadly out into the wall of water that prevented her from going further into the human world and, worse, kept her from returning home!
“Nyaaooohh..!” she cried out pitifully. The loud downpour drowned out any chance of finding her thief.
Cynfi rubbed her cold, wet ears until they were dry and pulled out a small satchel of sweets she had taken with her. Making sure only to eat a little, Cynfi put the bag away in case she was stuck in this world for too long.
While the human world’s time often slipped by faster than she liked, storms always made time slow down much to her displeasure. There was nothing she could do but wait.
“I guess I can sleep…” she nodded sagely, considering that was her go-to plan for every situation.
Curling up in her long half-dress half-coat, she made herself comfortable in the tree hole and gave another wide mouthed yawn.
“I’ll sleep… only for a little bit…” she told herself, falling asleep quickly to the drizzle of rain and low rumble of thunder.
She quietly morphed into a cat as she drifted into slumber.
