Nintendo’s comments on region-free gaming for Switch’s online shop ⊟ 

I really did not expect Nintendo to go all-in on making the Switch region-free! There were worries that Switch owners would only be able to play games from other regions if they bought physical copies, but Nintendo cleared that up in a Q&A about the console published by Kotaku last night.

From what it sounds like, it’s a PSN-style system that lets you create different users to play digital games published in other countries. And based on this photo Nicalis tweeted, changing users is as easy as hitting Y on your controller.

Also shown in that now-deleted tweet: copies of several Nicalis games running on Switch (Cave Story, 1001 Spikes, and The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+), te console’s previously unseen dark user interface, and a hint of Hydra Castle Labyrinth, an indie Japanese freeware game that hasn’t yet been announced for a port. Chances are you or somebody you know has recently become the owner of an Instant Pot, the multifunction electric pressure cooker that can produce fork-tender pot roasts in less than an hour, as well as brown meat, cook beans without soaking, and even do the job of a rice cooker or crockpot. The Instant Pot­­ isn’t advertised on TV or in the newspapers, and yet it’s become a viral marketing success story, with owners often describing themselves as “addicts” or “cult members.” That’s the kind of word-of-mouth publicity Instant Pot founders dreamed of when they first began designing the countertop appliances.

The Instant Pot electric pressure cooker has been around since 2010, but really became the buzz during the last six months of 2016. While the company’s electric pressure cookers are sold at Wal-Mart, Target and Kohl’s, the bulk of its sales come from Amazon, driven by social media. Deep discounts on Amazon Prime Day and again on Black Friday, along with the viral online sharing of these sales, turned Instant Pot into a household name. With 215,000 units sold on Prime Day alone, the Instant Pot Duo is Amazon’s top-selling item in the U.S. market. Not bad for a company that does no TV or print advertising and only recently began the process of hiring a marketing agency.

Betsy DeVos has no idea what the difference between proficiency and growth is

Department of Education secretary nominee Betsy DeVos’s Senate confirmation hearing was Tuesday. 

Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) described an experience contrasting proficiency to growth and used that to ask DeVos for her views on the debate. DeVos couldn’t answer the question. Read more

Betsy DeVos cites danger of “grizzlies” as reason to allow guns in schools

Also during her confirmation hearing, DeVos cited grizzly bears as why the federal government not to take action against guns in schools.

DeVos said in Wyoming, “I’d imagine there’s a gun in the school to protect from potential grizzlies.”

Teachers union chief says Betsy DeVos “is a trainwreck waiting to happen”

Lily Eskelsen Garcia, president of the National Education Association, said in an interview that DeVos is unqualified and has the wrong vision for the nation’s schools.

“I don’t think you will find one human being who could actually point to something who could say, ‘Because she did this, it really improved those traditional, neighborhood public schools,” Garcia said. “What you’re seeing here is a trainwreck waiting to happen.”  Read more
