a lot of interpretations of the shelter dark world honestly feel too holy or natural/open when so far, the scenery we've gotten describing the roots (what the game calls the shelter dark world, depths seem to be a more metaphorical name describing how deep it is while roots more precisely describe it) is that of a dirty, probably mold filled underground complex and a claustrophobic, almost pitch black cave. like the game more often refers to it as hell so i feel like it wouldn't have the same lighting as the sanctuary (a holy site)

that being a mysterious and demonic character that rarely appears in the main story who's connected to both the meta and in-game narrative (mike is labeled as a DEVICE in the files and chara is named by the player) and serves as a catalyst for the events of the game. also, they're tied to certain in-game stats (chara: atk, LV, def, hp mike: love/mercy, value/g) and they're also tied to the game's "bad route" (chara only shows up onscreen in geno and friend's only appearance in a fight so far is the eram fight)
ofc they are wildly different character-wise (chara was abused and mistreated by their human parents while mike for all we know could've just done it for the love of the game) but they both seem to fill the same narrative role.
hell they even have similar jump scares (flying towards the screen and laughing)
