I panicked. I panicked and I applied for nine jobs.
Getting ready to start 3L year. Less than one year to the bar exam. I can’t believe how much I’ve learned in the past two years, from working at Legal Aid, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the Public Defender’s Office. I feel like I’m on the right track.

All I have left of my first year of law school are the exams. Can you believe it? I’ll be working for Community Legal Aid this summer, and I’m very excited to be helping those who can’t afford legal services. I’ll be working in housing and consumer litigation, which should keep me pretty busy. In other news, the weather is warm and I’m sitting on my back porch. Studying is better out here!
He rather use the same amount of money to play golf than provide poor people with food. That’s all you need to know about America’s President.
A Semester of Law
Hello friends! It’s been awhile since I’ve updated you on the many wonderful things happening in my life. First, I’m completely procrastinating studying for my last final to write this post. Second, my first semester has been a whirlwind of memo-writing, contract drafting, torts quizzes, and singing in concert choir. I’ve also done a mock client intake interview and a mock counseling session.
There is an overwhelming amount of information you get in the first year of law school. My classes for first semester were Contracts, Torts, Criminal Law, and LLEAP I, a legal writing course. We’ve tried to answer some very important questions, including, “What is chicken?”
I made some amazing friends in law school, and I think that’s the thing that surprised me most about this semester. The atmosphere at my law school is very noncompetitive compared to the stereotype. We all want to succeed, but a running theory is that because many of us don’t want to go into traditional litigation, there is less of an argumentative spirit. Everyone is supportive, and there are even free cookies during exam week. And ping-pong tables. And puzzles.
Topping off this semester, I got to complete two projects for the international law center, including a briefing for the dean on the international criminal court, and a transcription of a panel discussion that should be published in our journal of international law.
Cherry on top: An alum paid for orchestra passes for students, so we can go see the Cleveland Orchestra for FREE! So many blessing! It has been an excellent first semester of law school, and no matter what happens when I get my grades, I’ll know this experience will keep driving me forward. Happy holidays to you all!
Prepping for the last exam of the first semester of law school. I can’t believe I made it this far. We’ll have to wait until mid-January for the results, but for now, I’ve just got to push through one more day.
Just finished my first day of law school. More on that later.
Just another day in the office. I’m working on some TA duties today, and I have a client this afternoon. I’m feeling like getting something done today. I have choir tonight, and I’m looking forward to my upcoming concerts. I might grab some lunch and get some fresh air now before getting back to work. I think the sunshine and warm temperatures have helped me to feel a lot better. It’s sad to think that this is unseasonably warm for Alaska, and what that might mean in the long run, but right now, I’m grateful for how it is helping me to feel.
I’m looking forward to law school. I even watched Legally Blonde with my roommates last night to celebrate my decision (and also because that movie is iconic). I can’t wait to be a CWRU Spartan this fall!
In other news, I’ll be attending the Alaska Psychiatric Association conference next weekend in Alyeska. The theme is Sex, Drugs, & Rock and Roll, and Dr. Marsha Linehan is speaking. She basically created the treatment called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), the very same one that I’ve been trying to help start in Fairbanks. I think she is an incredible role model, and I’m very excited for the opportunity to hear her talk, and ask her questions.
People grow and change, and things get better. I’ve been having a difficult time this year, especially this February and March, struggling with depression, with little motivation, crying myself to sleep, falling behind on assignments, sleeping a lot and gaining weight, and missing Ohio very much. It’ finally April, and the sun is beginning to shine more outside. I’m beginning to feel like myself again. I want to do the things I love and I’m interested in my readings for class again. I’m becoming excited for my upcoming trip to England to visit my dear friends in Manchester, and to explore Ireland and Scotland. I’m happy to be heading home to Cleveland for the summer, where my sister is having a baby. I’m about to become an aunt! The biggest news is that I’m taking a break from my Ph.D. program next year. Yes, I’m taking a leave of absence, and before you say, “lots of people take time off from grad school,” you should know that It’s because I’m going to law school. I’ve spent the past year considering whether my program feels right for me or whether I’m actually called to do something else with my life. The same thing that drew me to Clinical Psychology is also pulling me towards law school, namely my desire to make other people’s lives better.
So this fall, you’ll find me at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, as a Hugo Grotius International Law Fellow. I can’t tell you how right this feels in my heart, to be heading home to my family. Of course, this means saying farewell to my friends in Fairbanks, but who knows if I may end up coming back one day. I’ll be reevaluating how I feel after my first year of law school to determine which path I will choose. Perhaps later in life, I will feel drawn to finish the other course.
If you are out there feeling sad, or unhappy with your life, listen to your heart and always keep fighting. Remember, even students of clinical psychology are susceptible to depression, and you are not alone.

This is important. Share this- education costs (particularly in the US are crippling enough without the added expense of texts) As a professor, go the extra mile and find/make ‘required’ readings/texts available in PDF form.
If you like having the physical copy (like I do) a great site is bigwords.com. it cross-references a ton of book sellers to find the best and cheapest deals. Most of my textbooks cost under $20 through them, and I rarely rent.
Need this!
I got that red lip, classic thing that you like. :)
Please can we spring break just a little bit longer?
