It’s interesting to me to see how different people initially react to the moment when Grace runs away from being dragged to his death. It spans a spectrum, some people start crying, some laugh. Directors Phil and Chris have said that range comes from the experience of discomfort.

And it is deeply uncomfortable, because you realize that this hero that’s been built up in front of you is actually nothing more than a pitiful man. The way he runs isn’t just pointless, it lacks violence. He doesn’t try to fight anybody. He tries to reason, he pleads. Nobody listens to him. It’s the manifestation of a bad dream where you’re screaming and nobody cares.

But the beauty of Grace is that he conquers the immeasurable odds of his circumstances and his grief in part because he doesn’t remember that he’s a coward. Phil and Chris said that he only remembers the truth when he’s at “his greatest moment of confidence and security” when Rocky shows him around his ship.

The audience witnesses this, all his triumph and the glory that he and Rocky reflect back on one other. And then they see that none of this should have ever happened. It doesn’t take away the victory, but recontextualizes it into a suggestion: we are all capable of incredible things if we could only forget our own fear.
