I've been told my entire life that I don't have what it takes to be an effective soldier, and maybe that's true, but nothing will stop me from fighting for my country and standing up for what I believe in.

eleonora had expected a lot but not this. in fact she didn’t even know how to be a mother or anything that was similar.  surely she could hold a baby but raising a child? her? she did not grow up with her mother and barely had time with her father either and now that. panic clearly was written over her face as she looked at him, her mind working out all the terrible scenarios in quick short films. “ i can’t do this. ” she spoke blankly. “ never would i be able to raise a child, ever. i  can’t…  —-  i don’t even know how..” of course having a child was great but she only saw the negativity in her fear of becoming a mother.

elle stood there, hands in his as she listened to him. was he really serious about it? if so, she didn’t have to be so scared did she. the blonde could trust him she knew that much. the girl wrapped her arms around him, thankful and feeling a little relief. it was strange but she could explain it. at least she knew she had him and he wouldn’t leave. “ promise me you won’t leave me alone in this. ” straight answered is what she needed.

Forrest was glad to see her react the way she did, he’d never thought that he would have a family of his own, but now it was happening and he was going to do whatever it took to make things work.  “I promise. This war can’t go on forever and when it’s over I’ll find a job somewhere and we’ll get a house, we’ll...we’ll build a perfect little family together.  We can even get married, if you want to, we can do this, we just have to stick together.”

Forrest was terrified himself, he’d  never thought about having children, the risk of passing his condition on to an innocent child was too high for him to be comfortable having them, but it was done now and there was nothing they could do about it.  Taking a deep breath and trying to sound more confident than he felt, Forrest took her hands in his and looked into her eyes, “We can do this.  It’s not going to be easy, I don’t exactly have any experiences with being a parent either, but we’ll figure it out together, I’m not going to leave you to deal with this on your own.”  He shook his head, “Maybe we should have been more careful... I don’t know, but we can do this together, if it means I have to leave the army, then I will, I’ll do anything to make this work for us, I promise.”

“Two weeks,” she said softly. “Everyone has been abuzz about when you would wake up. I’m sure they’re going to want everything to happen at warp speed now, since it’s already been so long.” Her thoughts were clouded. There were more things she needed to tell him, but now wasn’t the time to do so. It didn’t help either that the main thoughts circling her mind were dark ones, like what would happen if the gamemakers and the president didn’t believe them. If they wanted it to work, they would have to force themselves to believe. Easier said than done. She’d have to read the details of what happened before to learn how to avoid a repeat of history.

She looked over at Forrest, still conflicted about why she had saved him in the first place. In the end she may have just caused a lot of trouble for a lot of people. Perhaps killing him would have been the more sensible thing to do, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do it.

“Do you want me to go find your mentor?”

“Damn.  That explains a lot though, I feel like my head got separated from my body and they just half-assedly sewed it back on.”  He agreed that they were likely going to want him up and about before long, this time tomorrow he’d probably be forced to give an interview, and the thought of all those lights and the noise made him want to vomit already.  He didn’t know a lot about head injuries, but growing up in 7, he’d seen plenty of people fall from trees and lose their ability to walk or their ability to form coherent sentences, and he was lucky that hadn’t happened to him, but he still felt terrible and nothing but lying in this bed sounded appealing to him. 

He felt a brief flash of fear when he realized that she could kill him right now if she decided to and there was nothing he could do about it, but he quickly pushed it out of his mind, she would save him in the arena only to kill him here, that would be pointless and probably more dangerous.  He looked back up at her and gently shook his head, “No, we didn’t really know each other all that well, I don’t think they’ll have anything to add to this whole...” he didn’t want to say mess, but that was what it felt like.  “To whatever’s going on here.  It would probably be best if you stayed for a little while, if you’re okay with that, I imagine it’s what they’ll expect from us, I’ve never been in a romantic relationship before, but once when my brother was hurt, his wife stayed with him every second until he was better...that seems like what normal couples would do...”

Alice looked at the ground in silence for a moment. She had been asking herself the same question since she had made the choice. “I don’t know. I suppose… well I couldn’t live with myself if I just left you there to die. I’m tired of the games and all that they stand for. My grandmother was a victor on her own, but… the games took the life of my brother. After that I guess.. well I wanted a way to take some revenge on that, if that makes any sense. A life for a life.”

It was only then that she realized just how treasonous her words sounded. It had been many generations since the last uprising, and if she wasn’t careful, there would be another one. The idea was a pleasant one, but at the same time, she couldn’t risk that. She wouldn’t put the lives of all those innocent people in danger, just because she felt angry.

Forrest considered that for a moment.  His mother had lost her younger brother to the Games, but Forrest had never met him, so he couldn’t claim he’d ever mourned the man, though his mother’s reaction when he’d been Reaped all those weeks ago had reminded him that no one was ever truly untouched by the Games and he was glad she hadn’t had to watch him die.  He was the youngest of the five children in his family and he’d been just a few short years away from being free, and he felt terrible that his family had to suffer the emotional torment of watching him as a Tribute. 

“Well...I imagine we’re not the most popular people in the eyes of the Gamemakers, but if we stick to this story and do what we have to to make it seem real, and avoid making waves until people have forgotten about us, there’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to come out of this alright.  I imagine they’re going to want us to do our public interviews and participate in the crowning ceremony and all that as soon as possible...have I been out for a long time? I can’t remember.”

Alice nodded, looking at him carefully before turning to the box and starting it up. The games were painful to watch, the first bit was the worst, with so many dying so quickly. She fast forwarded to only the bits that were relevant to the two of them. How she ran from the career pack, how he saved her, how she ran off with him to hide.

And then came the part where she looked to the ground rather than actually watch what was on the screen. How they slept together in order to keep up the act, and she fast forwarded to how Forrest got hurt, climbing up a tree to find the other tributes before getting knocked down and out by the earthquake. It showed how she protected him, killing the other two tributes and defiantly refused to kill him in the end, forcing them to name the two of them victors.

“There you have it,” she said, turning it off once it was over.

Forrest watched the video, his mouth open in shock throughout most of it, he remembered the bloodbath and spending the early part of the games alone, but he couldn’t remember saving her from the Careers or anything that followed, though it appeared they had been an effective team.

Though he was stunned into silence by what they had done, he understood why they’d made that particular choice, but it all seemed unreal, like he was watching someone else instead of himself.  When it was over, he didn’t speak right away, he needed a moment to gather his thoughts before he could come to terms with it all.  “You...,” his voice trailed off for an instant and then he continued, “You didn’t have to save me, you could have been the Victor all on your own and not had to deal with any of this.  I appreciate it more than I could ever express to you in words, but...why did you do it? Despite what we did, you don’t owe me anything, you should have just won the whole thing, from the looks of that fall I probably didn’t have much longer to live anyway.”

Alice nodded looking cautiously around the room before leaning in and kissing his cheek for show. “I’ll be right back then.”

It only took a moment of being outside before her request was met, and she was given one of the tvs that she could carry in the palm of her hand, before she went back inside, putting it on the bedside table and moving it to where he can see. “Ready?”

Despite the fact that he couldn’t remember anything about their “relationship,” Forrest still blushed a deep red when she kissed him. 

He turned and glanced at the TV, he knew this was his chance to say he wasn’t feeling up to it and going back to resting until he felt more emotionally prepared to handle all of this, but he needed to know what was expected of him.  “Not really,” he told her, “but the less I know about this, the more likely it is that I’ll make a mistake and blow this whole thing.  Let’s do it.”

“Probably, unless we want to be the cause of another riot. Wouldn’t mind it to be honest but since I prefer living, I’d rather not.” She heard people out in the hallway, and immediately moved closer to him.

“Do you want me to ask to show you a copy of the games? So you can remember better? If we’re going to pull this off,” she whispered.

He shook his head and then winced, that had been a terrible idea, “We definitely don’t want that, I enjoy living too, plus it would put our families in danger and that’s the last thing I want.”

The idea of reliving even a moment of the games wasn’t an appealing one to him, and he was fairly certain watching a screen was going to make his head explode, but he couldn’t keep acting like he knew what was going on when he didn’t.  “I guess you’d better, I’ll be able to be more convincing if I have some kind of an idea of what went on.”

Alice sighed. This story wasn’t something she wanted to have to tell all over again, but she knew that if she didn’t, it would be the death of both of them. “We… we did what… the two who shouldn’t be talked about did all those years ago. Pretended to be in love to get more help. And it got us both out alive,” she said quietly, scooting over to him, practically whispering in his ear. She never knew who was listening.

“We won, but… they expect us to be together. At all times.”

Forrest was practically frozen in place as she explained what had happened.  The year there had been two winners had been horrible, the Districts had barely recovered from the failed revolution that followed and if they had both won, he couldn’t imagine how much the two of them were hated right now, unless they really did think they were in love.  He wished he could remember, but if they were supposed to be a couple, he was going to play along with it.

She was sitting next to him and he leaned back against his pillows, still squinting at the lights, and turned his head so that he was looking at her, if anyone came in, it would look like she was comforting him and he was enjoying having her with him.  “So...we’re probably going to have to do the whole couple thing, right? Marriage, family? All that?”

Alice had done absolutely everything and anything she could once she had been chosen for the games. While it was true that she had been part of the career pack, she didn’t want to be. She didn’t want to be in the games at all. No one had stepped up to volunteer in her place. And while she was a good fighter, she wasn’t good enough to make it on her own. And she trusted no one else. At least until she had met him.

“Do you not remember anything?” she said cautiously. That would be problematic, if her plan was to work. It was generations upon generations ago that the revolution had come and failed, that a couple had tried the same tactic she used to get two people out of the games alive. And while it had worked, and she had managed to kill the other remaining tributes, the boy from 7, Forrest, his name was, had been injured. They were pulled out together at the end, announced the joint victors at the joy of the Capitol. But if they didn’t pull off the act of being lovers, they were both dead. She knew that from her history well enough.

Forrest was still fairly shocked at the fact that he was alive, he hadn’t expected to make virtually any progress in the Games, let alone win them, or co-win them.  He tried to look back into his memories, but all he could remember was falling from the tree, a moment of excruciating pain, and then nothing until a few minutes earlier.  

He shook his head, “I’m trying, but there’s nothing there.  I don’t remember anything at all after the earthquake, how are we both still alive? What happened? Did we do something wrong? Are they going to let us go home?  I don’t...I don’t know how they would handle this situation, but then again my head feels like someone is smashing it in with a rock right now, so I’m kind of having a hard time getting any coherent thoughts out.”

Forrest woke up, but immediately closed his eyes against the bright lights of the Capitol’s hospital.  Due to the head injury he’d suffered in the area, he couldn’t exactly remember the circumstances that led to him being there, but he was still alive so that had to mean something, but it was all unclear to him.  His head was pounding, but other than that, he felt alright, and all he really wanted to do was return to District 7 and see his family, but he knew there would be work for him to do before he was allowed to leave. 

After a few minutes of keeping his eyes tightly closed he felt well enough to brave the lights and push himself into a sitting position, and when he looked around, he was surprised to find that he wasn’t alone.  He recognized the woman, she was the Tribute from District 1, and he was more confused than ever.  “What...” he voice was weak from disuse, so he cleared his throat and tried to speak to her again.  “What happened? I can’t remember anything.  I was in a tree, there was an earthquake and now we’re here...”
