“I find the whole concept of being ‘sexy’ embarrassing and confusing. If I do a photo-shoot, people desperately want to change me - dye my hair blonder, pluck my eyebrows, give me a fringe. Then there’s the choice of clothes. I know everyone wants a picture of me in a mini-skirt. But that’s not me.”— Emma Watson

Okay.
Lately, I’ve heard about some things resurfacing in the BatB fandom. Stuff about BESTIALITY and STOCKHOLM SYNDROME, for instance. And sure, I can’t change you guys’ opinions about the presence of these subjects in the BatB universe. If you think that it’s a horrible movie that’s fraught with unthinkable topics that would scar kids for life, then I don’t even know why you’re taking the time to read this. Nothing I can say will ever be able to change your mind. So for the good of everyone else here that’s going to stay and read through my little defense of the reason why this blog exists today, please just go off to some other part of Tumblr.
Now that that’s out of the way, the first thing that’s been going around has been STOCKHOLM SYNDROME. That the only reason the spell was broken was because Belle fell for her captor. And I honestly don’t think that this Is what the film is trying to portray. In fact, one of the prime signs that a person has developed Stockholm Syndrome is that the feelings of love start to make an appearance when the captor harasses, intimidates, abuses, or threatens the hostage. And I never once saw Belle try to warm up to him when the Beast was doing any of those things to her. She tried to escape, she vehemently argued against him when he demanded she follow his orders, and even after she rescued him from the wolves, she didn’t like him. She still argued. She even turned to the other servants and basically asked “Why do you waste your time on him?” I think what people are confusing with Stockholm Syndrome is Belle’s ability to accept people, no matter what kind of background they came from. And that quality is something we see in Belle far before she meets the Beast, or has even heard of him.
She’s kind to everyone, even if later they end up lashing out at her. It makes sense that Belle would be rude to this horrible creature that kidnapped her father and only let him go after she sacrificed herself. The moment the first echoes of Prince Adam start to appear, she doesn’t necessarily fall for him.
She shows him kindness. Kindness and love are two completely different things. And blind love (like the kind that’s involved in the creation of Stockholm Syndrome) isn’t even part of the equation. She developed a friendship with him. And it wasn’t until after she was set free from him altogether that she started to fall in love with him.
Emma Watson even spoke in an article about it. If I can’t convince you, listen to her.
Now, the other thing that BatB is being accused of supporting is bestiality. And yeah, I can kind of see where you guys are coming from there. But again, there’s no way I think of that when I watch this movie.
Now, Google has two definitions for bestiality, and the first one is “extremely cruel or depraved behavior”. If that’s what you’re talking about, then yeah, that could be applied to Gaston. He was prepared to leave Maurice to get eaten alive, rallied the village into an angry mob, manipulated LeFou into following his every order, and killed a potential love rival all because he wanted Belle for his wife. Even when he was only thinking that perhaps that hole in his life was the absence of a wife. It could have very well been something else.
But if we’re all talking about the bestiality that everyone’s more familiar with, then let me put all of that to rest. Belle never slept with the Beast, rendering the term invalid. But as for simply loving an animal, I would like to remind you of several things:
The Beast was a human first. Belle was able to connect to the person inside, and in the 2017 version, the servants did tell her that he used to be a prince. Plus it’s likely that she saw the paintings and put it together.
There is a type of love called agape, and it’s perhaps the best type of love of all. It’s unconditional. It extends to animals and humans alike. It’s the respect that humans and pets have for each other, and it’s the call to help someone who’s in need. Sex or passion or kissing or any of that have nothing to do with this. To extend a hand to someone is all there is to it.
All the curse specified is that he had to love another and earn one’s own love in return. Never says what type.
You can follow this link if you still don’t understand.
But I feel like that was the kind of love that Belle felt for Adam. Then, after he transformed back into the prince, it grew to resemble something like eros, which is what people usually think of. And take note, this was only after Adam became human again.
And all in all, that’s what makes Beauty and the Beast so beautiful. It’s that a love as pure as agape is what broke the curse in the end, not love the way we usually think about it. It’s a love that everyone can feel, not just a couple. If there was ever world peace, or a world without negative feelings, then I’m sure you’d get what I’m talking about.
So yeah. There are my two cents on the matter. Sort the rest out yourselves.
Perfectly and eloquently said.
Beautifully written.
I agree with everything you had to say about the Stockholm Syndrome debate, but I’d also like to add that it’s completely ridiculous to call it that. When Belle takes her father’s place as prisoner, within a couple of hours she is given her own suite, a massive dinner party made just for her, and freedom to roam the castle (except the West Wing). When her curiosity gets the best of her and she does go there she’s invading Adam’s privacy, the one place she’s bid not to go. Adam yells at her to leave, and I don’t think he means her to leave the West Wing. I think he means he wants her to leave the castle.
It’s a matter that’s been beaten into the dirt, but there’s one thing that is fundamental for Adam’s character when he’s cursed: he doesn’t like being observed. He doesn’t like people watching him, judging him. Belle proves to be more disturbance than she’s worth. He’s tired of being judged, and he wants to be alone with his misery once more. So he tells her to leave. Belle does so, and only comes back to the castle because she chooses to do so. No one is forcing her to help Adam back to the castle. In fact, he’s expecting death to come for him when he’s lying there, injured, in the snow. She chooses to help him back to the castle, she chooses to stay with him while he heals, she chooses to stay with him even after he’s healed. She could’ve left anytime she wanted, but she didn’t out of the kindness of her heart. That’s why she pauses when she’s about to hop on Philippe and return to Villeneuve and her father, her life. She can choose to go home and abandon her beliefs in herself, in human kindness, or she can choose to be kind and help him back to his castle.
All of this happens in one day. She is his prisoner for one day. The rest of the movie she is free. And for that day, she shows no interest in him at all. She chooses to stay with him even after he’s healed because the staff tell her about the curse, and his childhood, and her empathy towards him is too strong. She can’t leave him now. Especially since the two have started to grow closer, getting to know each other. She’s become fond of him and he’s become fond of her.
This is also important because Belle knows that Adam is human, something that a lot of people tend to forget. It’s not like two different versions of Adam, one where he’s The Beast and one where he’s Prince Adam. He’s always Adam, always has been. He’s just been cursed to live in another’s body. Belle knows this and falls for the man she knows he is. She falls in love with Adam, not The Beast. It simply cannot be bestiality because Adam’s not an animal, he’s human. Nor does Belle show any interest of expressing anything sexual with him while he’s cursed, which is something that troubles them both. She struggles with the fact that she’s not only fallen in love with the man who captured her father, but a man who’s barely a man at all. It’s easier for her not to recognise these feelings and instead telling herself that she’s still his prisoner, she’s not free, because if she were free to leave she would. It’s something she tells herself over and over, to try and stop herself from feeling guilty about being in love with him of all people.
When he dies she, full of regret that time has run out for them, still struggles with the fact. She hesitates before saying the words “I love you”, because it’s heartbreaking to finally let herself feel all these feelings for him now that it’s too late.
Even so, when he transforms back into his real body, you can see how nervous she is. Not because she’s afraid of what he might look like, but because his body will be human now and what does that mean for them? They’ve never touched in a sexual way before. What will happen? Now that he’s finally in his human body they’ll be able to touch, and kiss, and everything else, and she’s just a tiny bit scared. He doesn’t tell her “it’s me” because she knows it is. She’s seen his face in portraits, she’s been told he’s human. Up until this moment, even if she’s wanted to, they’ve never done anything intimate because it would be wrong and they simply couldn’t.
She falls in love with him, his soul, his heart, his eyes, not his body. Just as he does the same for her.
Just wanted to update and say that my theory is pretty much confirmed. Emma said this in the interview you linked:
“I think there is a very intentional switch where in my mind Belle decides to stay.“
part one x
insp. (x x)
Emma’s going to the Golden Globes!!! I swear to God if no other actor from batb goes too I will freak
I just??? wish Belle had punched Gaston at least once during the fight on the turrets. Like-
“When we get home you will marry me and that beast’s head will hang on our wall!”
“Never!!!”
*crack* nose broken, bleeding, teeth knocked out. Gaston tries to hit her back, but stumbles and falls over the edge, thus dropping his gun
Or maybe just like?? have her fight back??? let her fearlessly defend her angel boyfriend. This girl fought a pack of wolves without a single moment of hesitation- with a STICK!!!
I know they’d never dare but it’d be awesome to have her stop Gaston when he’s about to run away after Adam has threatened him, have her take his gun, and point it right in his face. Gaston is terrified, she really isn’t the pliant wife he’d wanted her to be. A GIRL (!!!) is about to win over him holy shit BELLE of all people (bookworm belle who cooks dinner for her father, tends to their garden, smells like strawberries, teaches little girls to read) disarmed HIM and is going to shoot his brains out. Gaston is scared out of his freaking mind.
But Belle’s not Gaston, she won’t stoop to his level. She stares him down, makes him think like she’s going to pull the trigger, and then knocks the freaking lights out of him, gun in hand.
“NEVER hurt me or the ones I love ever again”
Gaston whimpers and stumbles back onto his feet. She lets him keep the firearm as he runs away with his tail between his legs. She’s not scared of him
Ho ho ho, it's your Santa! I hope you've been having a lovely few days and that you enjoy yourself in London! :D Regarding your last answers, I am very much entertained by your love for Agathe! Do you happen to have any headcanons regarding her past or future (post-BatB)?
Ho ho ho!!!
Okay so I watched the movie again and I don’t know why but Agathe just fascinates me. I love how she’s kind of the mastermind behind the entire plot, and how her morale is just a bit off. She’s the kind of person that does something with good intentions that ends up being horrendous (as in cursing Adam and giving him major issues with his confidence and making him severely depressed).
I read this one fic where Agathe is a fairy godmother of sorts for Adam. I’m not too sure about that but I do like the idea of her watching over Adam. She’s kind of like Nanny McFee if you ask me. But I kind of like her past being a mystery. As for post batb fuck yes!
• Adam is scared af of her, but Belle (being her friend) sees that she’s actually very kind and did it out of care• She and Belle get along very well and Belle really enjoys her intellect, hearing her stories about the people she’s met, seeing the world through her eyes• She stays for a while after the curse has been broken, just to make sure everything is at it should be. She lets Adam keep some instincts from the curse (ie. The Growl™), mostly because she knows Belle likes it• Belle begs her to stay with them, as she considers her a great friend, but Agathe insists that she has to continue on. There are more stories to tell• She keeps an eye on them though, without their knowledge. She shows up from time to time, different bodies each time, just to check up on them• One time she sent Belle a letter from one of the many countries she visited. Belle was so excited to hear from her and told Adam immediately• After some time has passed Adam learns to understand her reasons, and forgives Agathe (to everyone’s surprise). In the end he realises that without her help he’d never have met Belle, and he’d never be the person he is today. Their daughter’s named Marie Susanne-Agathe de Villeneuve in honour of her, as a small way of saying thanks
I want so much more than they’ve got planned.
