Horseback riding - the perfect way to explore Argentina and Chile from the Atacama to Patagonia
Atacama Desert in Chile is the driest place in the world. The average annual rainfall is zero. But maybe once in five years, sometimes longer, it does rain - and then something like a miracle occurs. "It was like stepping into paradise," wrote a British visitor, Gill Ross, who saw what the rains of 1988 brought to the Atacama. She went on to describe "beautiful delicate flowers of brilliant colors that grow in huge sweeps as if God had scattered handfuls of seeds in the wind". The following year, another of the world's poorest places flowers: dried up Lake Eyre in central Australia, where summer temperatures can reach 54 degrees Celsius (130 degrees Fahrenheit). Torrential rain in April and May filled the lake, and the gloomy surrounding desert burst into color as plants sprang seemingly from nowhere and blossomed. The flowers grow from the millions of seeds that are stuck in the sand since the time in the desert last flowering. How are they with the extraordinarily harsh conditions that greet them? The answer lies in the speed with which the plants go through their life cycle, and the nature of their seeds. Plants in more temperate climates can take months to mature, flower and produce seeds, these desert "Ephemeral" is only two weeks. The seeds did not germinate if they are saturated with water, which will happen only after particularly heavy rain. Or else they stay inside the hard shell to protect them from drought as long as 25 years. When the rains come, they bring color to the desert just a few short weeks. Seeds of certain plants in this unique arid regions react to different amounts of water, so make sure they do not all germinate at once: some are always held in reserve for the future. And almost all these seemingly magical plant has large, bright flowers that attract so many pollinating insects as possible. Short-lived as they are, they are therefore a good chance of being fertilized and gives rise to another generation.
