“You’re not wrong.” It was boring, but necessary and sometimes he still didn’t think Kingsley knew what to order so he liked to double check the lists and make sure they actually had what they needed. “Pie sounds great.” Kai set the list down and followed her out, smirking as she related what she’d done on land. “You were doing exactly what you should be, then. Oh, I won a drinking competition against Alec and ended up in several different people’s beds. Made some coin from a few dicing games and the rest of it’s a little fuzzy, to be honest.” 

“I rarely ever am.” Came the confident reply, accompanied by a smirk and shoulder-shrug. “Right? It’s apple, I’ve been smelling it bake all day.” Laughing at his land-antics, Lexi couldn’t help but shake her head. “I wouldn’t go up against Alec drinking ever. Even if he spotted me a couple pints. It’s only fuzzy after the different beds and the dice game? Your liver must hate you.”

Alec gave her a skeptical look, though he didn’t crush the bird. In fact, he set it back on the map. It would probably blow off again, but he wasn’t sure how to secure it, short of pinning it to the table. “Well. It appears you have some skills that don’t involve mischief or climbing the rigging.”

Lexi’s lip quirked up when Alec didn’t crush her creation, which turned into a full-blown grin when he admitted she had skills. “I mean, sometimes I toss them at people and scare them, but mostly I just like to fly them around the nest.” She replied.

“Hurry up and get it done then” he said as she made her way across the deck and ready to climb up the ropes. “Just make sure you do it correctly this time, I cant afford to toss the whole crew overboard, I’m sure Kingsley would notice if you were all missing” he replied, a little more calm then before, if it had’t of been for Lexi quickly jumping up and offering to fix the rope he might of already thrown three of the crew overboard.

With a mildly sarcastic salute, Lexi scurried up the mast and swung onto her precious ropes. Hanging upside-down, she untied the ropes and watched him continue to growl and grumble. “I am sure he would, sir. Then you’d’a had a problem on your hands, what with jus’ you and him ta sail the ship.”

Alec was back in his work mindspace and was startled when a small bird landed on his map. He moved to hit it with his spyglass only to realize it was made of paper. He picked it up carefully, examining the delicately folded edges, then looked up at Lexi, surprised and suspicious. “You made this?” He held it out and the wind lifted its wings a little.

Chewing her lip, Lexi watched him examine it. She wasn’t overly-attached to anything in her life, much less someone’s opinion, but she was always a little weary of someone stomping on her creations. “No, I payed someone out of my pittance of a salary to make it for me.” Sarcasm dripped, but her face betrayed her wariness.

“I wouldn’t know. I’m too often looking to see if they’re armed or not.” 

“Jesus. That’s quite the find. A lesser man, and one who hadn’t just sat down, would probably try and take that from you. I’d put it away if I were you, miss.”  

“Ah, that would make sense, but you can tell if someone’s about to fill you with lead by the way they look at you, too.”

“Yup, and I would like to see them try. Granted, nobody knows about it but you’n’me, but I’d see it at the bottom of the ocean before someone else’s pocket.”

“Actually, yes, I can. It’s very easy, I think the words, and then I say them out loud. You should try it.” He gave her a look but let her go, assuming he would never see the paper again, and only hoping she wouldn’t interrupt him for long enough for him to get work done.

55 minutes later:

 Alec’s desk was still covered in paper, numbers, maps, and tools. Lexi, having no desire to spoil the surprise tossed something toward his desk. The paper flowed gracefully through the air to land somewhere on top of the Mediterranean. “Whatcha think?” She said, finally peeking around the corner.

“Plenty of rough around the edges men of the law about. Makes them less easy to spot.”

“What is it, exactly? Looks expensive, to say the least.”

“Ah, but there’s usually something in their eyes that give it away.”

“It’s a gold-plated pocket watch, with diamond inlay. Some asshole must really hate himself this morning.”

“I don’t care. Although, if you really wanted to steal it, you probably shouldn’t have done it so…openly.” 

“Nah, you look a little rough ‘round the edges to be a man of the law.”

“Obviously. What kind of moron you take me for? I stole it back in port, I’m just playin’ with it now.”

Alec shifted everything away from her when she leaned on the table. “Several, but I’m not going to teach them to you.” He sighed and handed over the slip of paper, cocking an eyebrow. “Don’t you have work that needs doing?”

“Rude. Ya’ can’t just tell me I need to know a bigger variety and then not help me.” Grinning ear to ear, she snatched the paper from him and traipsed through the door. “Thus why I need the paper!”

This is a wild idea- but hear me out- how about not breaking the law?

I’m a pirate, sweets. It’s what pirates do. By existin’, by standin’ on this ship right now, I’m breakin’ your precious law. If I let it bother me, I would never not be bothered.

“Huh. Probably not, as I’m so often breaking it, I really don’t consider it to be all that important. I’m hung anyway, so why bother with specifics?”

“And I am cursed with you, clearly.” Alec pointedly ignored her and fiddled with the sextant, though he didn’t want to actually take his attention too far away from her, unless she lifted anything. “You should learn some new songs then. Elsewhere, preferably.” She was incorrigible, and he cherished fantasies of dunking her headfirst in the sea, but resisted the urge. Her request seemed far too innocent. “I’ll give you one, if you show me what you intend to do with it. Then I’ll decide, how about that, imp?”

“I wouldn’t call it a curse, exactly.” Lexi shrugged, leaning against the heavy table. She wasn’t fooled by his nonchalance any more than he was fooled by her evading. “Well, now, that’s a good idea. Know any good ones?” Laughing, she put her hand out in an expectant gesture. “Alright, give me an hour and I’ll show you exactly what it is I intend to do with your precious scraps.”

“Whoever tied the rope up there needs to get back up and fix it quick before I toss them overboard”

Leaving your wallet on the table of a crowded pub, in a port no less, should be illegal then, because it’s just too tempting.

“It is important, if tedious” His eyebrows went up at her laugh. He was serious about that threat. “I’d say that suits me fine. What did you get up to while we were on land? Caused some trouble, I hope.” 

“Yup, sounds boring as fuck.” Lexi smirked at his raised eyebrows, she knew he’d been serious, she just hadn’t cared. “Good, ‘cause I’m hoping there’s still some pie left.” Parading out of his quarters, she headed toward the galley. “You know, the usual. I caused a little chaos, there was an all-out brawl, and then I passed out on a bar table. Barely made it back on time, actually. You?”
