1. What does your character think of their father? What do they hate and love about him? What influence - literal or imagined - did the father have?
Dominic isn’t the biggest fan of his father. He loved him as a child, as many children do - until he discovered just how much he had kept from him and his sister. He didn’t want to resent his father as much as he does, but considering now Dom tells everyone his parents are dead to him, its clear that Dominic has underlying issues of resentment and angry with his dad. He loved the youth his dad had instilled in him despite his older age, something that’s similar in Dominic now - this influences Dom daily, reminding him to always maintain a positive youthful outlook, despite how much he dislikes the way his relationship with his father came to a close.
2. Their mother? What do they think of her? What do they hate? Love? What influence - literal or imagined - did the mother have?
Considering all that Dominic has discovered about his mother, he has a hatred toward her that he cannot express in words. Her actions ruined their family, and Dominic can never forgive that. His mother knew that, too, that Dom would end up hating her, and paid much of her attention to his sister - something Dom resented, and something that still affects him now. He continuously feels like he’s not good enough, that he has to fight for attention. Any influence his mother had was and is negative, always knocking down any confidence a young Dom had, while his father tried bringing him back up.
3. Brothers, sisters? Who do they like? Why? What do they despise about their siblings?
Dom has one sister, whom he is quite close with - they did, after all, face foster care and the betrayal of their parents together. They are quite similar, with Dom’s sister Laura being a little more outgoing than he is - she’s a high flying PR representative for a fashion firm based in London, constantly updating her older brother with details of her life. Dom is glad he still has some family to turn to in times of strife: they both agreed that their parents were dead to them, instead relying on one another since Dom was 16. The only thing Dom dislikes about Laura is her incessant narcissism, constantly turning conversation back to her - though he knows he can be similar at times.
4. What type of discipline was your character subjected to at home? Strict? Lenient?
As children, the Sherwood kids were allowed a lot of free reign, but they were also strongly disciplined when it was needed. A more new age style of family, their parents didn’t believe in strict punishment, instead trying to teach Dom and Laura that their actions had reactions, and to try and instill as much good into their kids as possible - something Dominic finds ironic, now, looking back at it all, considering that his parents had committed such a heinous crime.
5. Were they overprotected as a child? Sheltered?
Truthfully, Dom had a close eye kept on him by his parents, purely for the reason that they feared he could be taken away at any moment. It wasn’t overwhelmingly so, however - Dominic never felt like he was overprotected, preferring to stick to his own company and imagination when he was younger, his situation suiting him just fine.
6. Did they feel rejection or affection as a child?
Dom felt rejection from his mother, but affection from his father. He was a daddy’s boy, his dad taking him under his wing and teaching him many ‘stereotypical manly things’, and encouraging his son’s interests in drama and acting from a young age. His mother rejected the idea of Dominic enjoying acting, and disliked that the young blonde had a much more active imagination than his sister - in fact, she discouraged him strongly from taking acting lessons, his father having to take him behind his mother’s back, something Dom remembers quite fondly.
7. What was the economic status of their family?
The Sherwood family weren’t poor by any means, but they weren't necessarily middle class either. They shared a 2 bedroom apartment just outside London in a place called Tunbridge Wells, somewhere Dominic credits with being his true home town, considering they settled there for most of his life. His mother was a housekeeper for a wealthy family, while his father worked in car sales.
8. How does your character feel about religion?
Religion isn’t all that important to Dominic. Ever since embracing his sexuality, he has found himself losing interest in his Christianity, finding himself isolated by those in his church for those he loves. While he enjoys the philosophy behind it all, and is actually quite interested in world religion, he isnt practicing his religion by any means.
9. What about political beliefs?
Dominic is a democrat, quite liberal in all his beliefs. His motto, for the most part, is if they’re pro-equality, pro-health care, pro-choice and pro-forward thinking, he’ll usually take an interest. Or, you know, if they aren't Trump.
10. Is your character street-smart, book-smart, intelligent, intellectual, slow-witted?
Dominic is quite educated - he went to college and university before his acting career truly took off, despite leaving secondary school a year early due to a ‘family incident’. He’s very book smart, but can be quite absent minded, as many of his friends would know - it can take some explaining for Dominic to ‘get’ something, but he’ll always come around to it in the end. In regard to street smarts, he’s never really had to put them to the test, but his cock-sure mind believes he’d be able to hold his own.
11. How do they see themselves: as smart, as intelligent, uneducated?
It’s noticeable to all that Dominic meets that he doesn’t regard himself as the most intelligent of individuals. He will constantly pull himself up for not understanding something right away - knowing his dyslexia will mean he could misinterpret or read something incorrectly - and put it down to ‘stupidity’, despite the fact he can actually be quite intelligent, and in those moments he won't hesitate to display the pride he feels within himself, given that he doesn't feel it too often.
12. How does their education and intelligence – or lack thereof - reflect in their speech pattern, vocabulary, and pronunciations?
Dominic is quite well spoken. Originally, he spoke with a British accent, but having lived in Los Angeles for the last 5 years and being cast in American television roles, his accent now has an American lilt to it - this doesn't resemble his intelligence or lack thereof, however. He has a wide vocabulary he tries to use regularly, but due to his difficulty with spelling he’s terrified of pronouncing words incorrectly, instead sticking to a more basic vernacular.
13. Did they like school? Teachers? Schoolmates?
School didn’t particularly bother Dom. He just saw it as something that needed to be done in order to get where he wanted to go. He wasn’t particularly top of the class, but he wasn’t bottom either - Dominic was discerningly average in school, in all regards. His one area in which he excelled was English, going on to study a degree in it on his way to pursuing a career in acting. Popular with classmates, he found himself with quite the active social life: part of the reason he never got straight A’s.
14. Were they involved at school? Sports? Clubs? Debate? Were they unconnected?
Dom played football (or soccer, to his American friends) as was tradition for many younger schoolgoing boys in the UK. He was somewhat involved in the speech and drama club, starring in some of the productions put on in school but preferring his out-of-school drama lessons instead, feeling that nobody took him seriously: that’s one thing about Dom - he takes his career more seriously than he takes everything else. Dominic was a little bit absentminded in school, but when it came down to it he was always able to settle down and study for all exams etc.
15. Did they graduate? High-School? College? Do they have a PHD? A GED?
Dominic did eventually finish his education - he left secondary school a year before scheduled due to events within his family, but through a ‘return to education’ scheme he was able to secure his place at college, then on to university to complete a 2 year bachelors degree in English and the dramatic arts. Once achieving the basic third level qualification, Dom swore to himself he’d never return back to school, especially now that he is living his dream.
16. What does your character do for a living? How do they see their profession? What do they like about it? Dislike?
Acting is Dom’s passion, something he feels completely blessed to be able to do as a living. While it most definitely isn’t the strain of acting he used to envision himself in - a younger Dom believing he’d be on stage rather than on a television screen - he wouldn’t change it for the world. Some of his co-stars even tell Dom he looks at the industry through rose tinted glasses, so besotted with his chosen career that sometimes he doesn’t even focus on the bad. His one primary dislike, however, is all the preparation and training that occurs before a role - he prefers to get thrown into the deep end, rather than weeks of costume fittings and training before hand, though he knows it’ll all be worth it in the end.
17. Did they travel? Where? Why? When?
When he was in his late teens, just before he began his degree, Dominic spent a summer backpacking around Europe with his sister and two close friends. It was a year after his parents were deported, and the siblings wanted an excuse to get away from Britain for a little bit, taking the opportunity to see sights they wouldnt get to see again in their lifetime. After finishing uni, Dom set off on his own adventure around the US: he was skeptical, considering how it was his ‘native’ birth land, not really wanting to face that on his original birth certificate he was american, but he knew he had to connect with his roots, and that all the best opportunities for him would be there. He travelled the west coast, and parts of the east, before settling down in Los Angeles permanently.
18. What did they find abroad, and what did they remember?
Dominic remembers a lot of his travels - he documented many of his adventures in a video journal, something he rewatches with fondness every time he misses the UK and European way of life. He credits the trip with providing him the courage and push to finally live his most authentic life, deciding to come out to his sister one rainy night in Krakow after they all visited a local gay club ‘for the banter’. It was this same trip he came to realise how badly he needed to learn himself again, igniting the idea for the blonde to take his one man roadshow across the US in the hopes he could discover himself, as cliche as that sounds.
19. What were the most deeply impressive political or social, national or international, events that they experienced?
Being involved with various charities under the ‘Free Form’ umbrella since starting Shadowhunters, Dominic has been provided with the opportunity to visit the White House on occasion - though he has still yet to meet the Obamas. He has marched with the Black Lives Matter movement whenever he can find the time, believing in equality for all considering he was rarely provided with it himself at the beginning of his career, understanding to an extent the oppression and heartbreak felt. Dominic also attended the 2012 Olympics in London alongside his then-roommate, Kelen Capener, which is probably the most impressive thing the two did, attending events such as diving, cycling and for some reason, fencing.
20. What are your character’s manners like? What is their type of hero? Whom do they hate?
Dom tries to be as nice as he can be to all that he meets, but it doesn't mean that he isn't a little bit shady. On the face of it all, he’s polite and well mannered, until you get to peel away his layers and notice how sarcastic he truly is - most of it isn’t with ill will, but sometimes....he can’t hold back how he feels, let’s put it that way. In regard to a hero, he always looked up to James Dean as an actor, and also takes great influence from Heath Ledger: both of them emulated what he wants for himself, and both took their careers to the ultimate vantage point. Dominic doesn't hate anyone in particular, rather hating actions performed by certain people - he doesn't agree with being fake to a person: if he doesn't like them, he’ll typically let it be known, even if he doesn't say it outright it will be evident in his actions. He doesn’t particularly want to spend his time on hating anyone, but he is very much a person that could bitch for hours if he wanted to.
21. Who are their friends? Lovers? ‘Type’ or ‘ideal’ partner?
Having a lot of acquaintances and people he exchanges conversation with on a daily basis, Dom’s best friends are Kelen Capener, Matt Daddario, Hadley Michaels, John O’Callaghan, Chrissy Constanza and Luke Hemmings, or at least he would consider them to be. Dominic recently decreased the size of his inner circle, becoming quite paranoid he was being talked about behind his back by some people - there was some drama he somehow became entangled with, and swore he’d only stick to positivity and authentic people from then on. As well as being one of his closest best friends, Matt is also Dominic’s boyfriend. Dating ‘officially’ for about a month now, they have known one another for at least a year and a half, working together on Shadowhunters before moving to Bridgecliff at the same time. To be honest, as sappy as it sounds, Matt is Dominic’s ideal partner, with the pair just recently agreeing to move in together: Dominic could never want to be with anyone other than the older actor.
22. What do they want from a partner? What do they think and feel of sex?
Dominic doesn't ask for a lot from a partner: he understands they’ll have a life outside of him, as he has a life outside of his relationship as well. Primarily, all he wants is affection, and someone that can provide him with security and safety - something he has found in Matt. He never really envisioned himself settling down until he began to take an interest in the actor, more because he feared he would lose roles as opposed to anything else. Dominic wants his partner to understand he still has some insecurities about being gay, and needs someone to be patient with him, both of which his boyfriend fully comprehends. As regards sex, Dom loves it for many reasons. He sees it as a way to connect and be intimate, but he’s also a fan of being rough and messy and having sex for fun as well as romance. Dominic has quite an active sex life with his boyfriend, the pair being very physical - they've both said at one time or another they can't keep their hands off each other, with both even visiting one another at work on their lunch break before to hook up.
23. What social groups and activities does your character attend? What role do they like to play? What role do they actually play, usually?
Dominic can be seen as the ‘dad’ of his friend group, and has even been called so before. He makes terrible puns, but is always there to guide and protect those he loves. He doesn't mind having that role, as it actually quite suits the person that he is. There are no real social groups or activities Dominic particularly attends, per se. He donates some of his time to acting classes at the LGBT youth centre when he has an occasional day off work, or he takes part in fitness training at the gym as well. Dominic is also a fan of eating in different places with Kelen, both of them even driving as far as California at one point for a good burrito while the show was on break - not realising they'd driven so far until they got there.
24. What are their hobbies and interests?
Working out is a major hobby of Dom’s. He used to hate it, but since moving to Bridgecliff he’s found himself working out quite a bit more - maybe it’s because his boyfriend is a personal trainer and Dom wants to keep up with him, but predominately it’s because he takes great pride in his appearance. Dom’s other hobbies include reading, writing (he’s working on his first book, though nobody really knows that), animals, astrology and photography. He’s interested in music and literature quite a bit, as well as training.
25. What does your character’s home look like? Personal taste? Clothing? Hair? Appearance?
This is what Dominic’s apartment looks like, except now with the addition of Matt living with him as well - something that Dominic is continuing to adjust to, but rapidly so. As far as personal taste goes, he’s a fan of keeping things relatively basic. He doesn’t like a lot of insane patterns or designs, preferring block colours etc as is evident in his personal style and his apartment. He likes to dress what he calls ‘comfy casual’: it wouldnt be unusual to see Dom wearing basketball shorts and a t-shirt on a daily basis, but it also wouldnt be strange to see him in a turtle neck and jeans the next - he dresses for his mood that day. He keeps his hair fairly short, but with a little boyband-esque feel to it. When he isn't filming his show, he’s been known to let it grow long enough for a man bun, something his boyfriend and friends seem to detest. Dominic takes pride in his appearance, keeping up somewhat of a skin routine and a clean shaven look.
26. How do they relate to their appearance? How do they wear their clothing? Style? Quality?
Dom’s appearance is a reflection of him. For the most part, what you see is what you get. Keeping his style basic, he believes in investing in versatile pieces he can rewear in different ways for different occasions. Clothing isn’t too big of an interest for him, frequently having to consult Kelen or Matt or Hadley to make sure he actually looks like a normal human in the outfit he has chosen. Quality is important to Dominic as well, as he tries to avoid shopping too often, rather wanting to get great wear out of the pieces he has.
27. Who is your character’s mate? How do they relate to him or her? How did they make their choice?
Dominic’s partner is Matt Daddario. Dom didn’t particularly choose Matt, per se, more so believing that fate and circumstance brought them together for the best of reasons. Of course, he was attracted to the male from the first time they met, but he didnt actively pursue him until they confessed their attraction for one another. ] They’re similar, but not too much so - they have the same interests, but also have interests independent of one another. Frequently, Dom thinks he has found his soulmate in Matthew, someone he wouldn’t mind growing old with. He relates to his boyfriend in that they have the same career and schedule outside of the show, and the same sense of humour and caring disposition in general life. They both get excited about the little things together, but aren't afraid to show their dismay with one another either. They work well, with many of Dom’s friends telling him just how much they support the relationship, something that means the world to the male.
28. What is your character’s weaknesses? Hubris? Pride? Controlling?
Dominic likes to be in control. He isn't necessarily controlling, but he does like to have knowledge of what’s happening, and to be kept in the loop - he doesn't like leaving things to chance, let’s say that. He can get a little bit paranoid that things aren't going the way they should, even when its all perfectly fine, constantly afraid he’ll have the rug pulled out from beneath him such as when his family fell apart. He can get a little nervous, his social anxiety being a hindrance at times, but he always manages to pull through in the end.
29. Are they holding on to something in the past? Can he or she forgive?
Dominic’s motto is simple - forgive, but never forget. He doesn't necessarily hold resentments, but if he’s done dirty by someone more than once, he won't hesitate to cut them off. In regard to whether Dominic is holding on to something, he’s holding on to quite a lot - some of the things he will never tell.
30. Does your character have children? How do they feel about their parental role? About the children? How do the children relate?
Dom doesn’t have kids, but believes that down the line he might like to adopt.
31. How does your character react to stress situations? Defensively? Aggressively? Evasively?
Dom does not handle stress the best. While he can manage it to a certain extent, he will blow up a little bit if the pressure gets too much, snapping at those around him while he tries to complete the task or to escape the situation at hand. Sometimes he might just shut down, not wanting to compute the dilemma at all.
32. Do they drink? Take drugs? What about their health?
Dominic does drink, yes, but that’s about where he draws the line. He is in good health, regularly getting check ups and watching his diet and exercise. He plans to live a long life, and ensuring his health is up to par is part of that.
33. Does your character feel self-righteous? Revengeful? Contemptuous?
While a lot of people in Dominic’s situation would feel that way, he tries his best to be as positive as he can be. Sometimes, he feels a little distain toward what his family did to him, but then reminds himself just how blessed he is now.
34. Do they always rationalize errors? How do they accept disasters and failures?
Dom tries to roll with the punches. While he always tries his best, he knows sometimes things won't always go his way - he would get a little angry at first, but then try to persevere and find a way around it, or a way to fix it. He does, however, analyse quite a lot of what he does after the fact, to try and prevent it all happening again.
35. Do they like to suffer? Like to see other people suffering?
No, nope, no way, and nah. Who likes to see that, or who likes to feel like that? Dom hates seeing others suffer.
36. How is your character’s imagination? Daydreaming a lot? Worried most of the time? Living in memories?
Daydreaming is one of Dominic’s favourite past times. He lives a lot of his life with his head in the clouds, thinking up scenarios or wondering whats going on in other parts of the world, or with other people. He has quite a vivid imagination, as he must, with being an actor. Dom tries to live in the moment, but often his mind can drift to ‘what if’ scenarios.
37. Are they basically negative when facing new things? Suspicious? Hostile? Scared? Enthusiastic?
Dominic is always extremely excited to try new things, but sometimes he can be a little nervous if its something he knows could be risky. He was terrified moving to LA by himself, but it ended up being the best thing he had ever done - it changed his life, and because of that, he faces new things with a genuine smile and curiosity, even if it seems terrifying at first.
38. What do they like to ridicule? What do they find stupid?
There’s not a lot he would ridicule - he shades people a little for dumb things that might be said or little stupid traits but he wouldnt do anything maliciously, anything he says is done in jest.
39. How is their sense of humor? Do they have one?
Dom has a unique enough sense of humour - he finds humour in almost everything, laughing his way through life with little sadness. He has an almost warped sense of humour as well - he’ll laugh at the dirtiest, cruelest things, despite his kind and almost innocent persona.
40. Is your character aware of who they are? Strengths? Weaknesses? Idiosyncrasies? Capable of self-irony?
Of course Dom knows who he is - it took him almost 20 years to fully figure it out, but he truly knows the person he is now. He knows his strengths and weaknesses almost to a fault, ensuring he acts to the best of his abilities the majority of the time, and trying his best to avoid his weaknesses to the point that it could almost be a problem in some circumstances. He’s well capable of making fun of himself, doing it more often than not.
41. What does your character want most? What do they need really badly, compulsively? What are they willing to do, to sacrifice, to obtain?
Dominic’s number one goal is to win an Emmy for Shadowhunters. The cast have already won a teen choice award, but Dom wants more. Ever since getting into television, he has wanted to win an Emmy or even a Golden Globe, and considering how close he is with the Shadowhunters cast, he wants to win alongside his closest friends. He puts his all into his work, and now living in Bridgecliff, he wants to put his all into his work at the Motel as well - he understand it’s a reality show where he can constantly be watched, and wants to set an example for younger kids, of how hard work will always pay off in the end.
42. Does your character have any secrets? If so, are they holding them back?
Like anyone, Dom has skeletons in his closet. He has one major secret he hasn’t told anyone, not even Kelen or Matt, but he knows he will have to come clean soon, with his parents due for release imminently. He keeps his cards close to his chest, refraining from getting too intimate with others in regards to secrets he tells, but he’s prepared to let his close friends know sooner, rather than later.
43. Is your character pragmatic? Think first? Responsible? All action? A visionary? Passionate? Quixotic?
Dom is quite pragmatic, yes. While impulsive at times, he tries to think through a situation and approach it realistically often, though he knows at the end of it all, he’s going to make a snap decision based upon instinct. He lets his passion and his imagination guide him more often than not, but his pragmatic nature allows him to be able to solve any problem if it arises.
45. Is your character tall? Short? What about size? Weight? Posture? How do they feel about their physical body?
Dominic is 5″11, though he looks a lot shorter next to his 6″3 boyfriend. He’s an average build, working out quite often to maintain a muscular, yet lean physique. Conventionally, he's considered attractive, even being cast in a Taylor Swift music video based primarily on his looks. Dominic, however, constantly strives to look better. He knows he’s blessed in the appearance department, but he wishes he could have a more rugged look at times, though he know he can't exactly pull it off.
46. Do they want to project an image of a younger, older, more important person? Does they want to be visible or invisible?
Dom wants to be seen - to be seen is to be heard, and to be heard is to be listened to, and thats all he wants. He wants someone to listen to and respect him. He paints himself as a young, ‘cool’ male, though sometimes (unintentionally) he acts a little more older than he tries to emulate. He just isn’t as ‘down with the kids’ as he tries to be.
47. How are your character’s gestures? Vigorous? Weak? Controlled? Compulsive? Energetic? Sluggish?
Primarily, Dom is quite confident in his movements. He’s a little ball of energy, sometimes being quite animated, but he always remains in control, confident in how he moves and acts. When he gets a little tired, however, he slows down a little bit, and his movements become less extravagant.
48. What about voice? Pitch? Strength? Tempo and rhythm of speech? Pronunciation? Accent?
An accurate portrayal of how Dom speaks in every day life can be seen here.
