Rest in Peace, Sam Neill (1947-2026) 🕊️
He was just a beautiful soul. His instagram was always a wholesome little corner of joy in the world. Just an old man who loved his vineyard, his farm, and his animals. He cared about the planet and its people and its nature. He was just a good person.
After a library trip, I've got my graphic novels replenished and some new titles in the stack. On digital I've got Don't Fear the Reaper and Gabe in the After as ebooks and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn on audio. Also started a Big Nate collection last night to settle in to bed. I had to renew Binding 13 since its a brick, but if I read on average 20 pages a day of it I'll get it done by the new due date. I've been avoiding Heartstopper and trying to find a special time to start it since its the end of the series.

If you think taking precautions during your ongoing pandemic plus other viral outbreaks is a political stance, I have news for you: viruses don't know about your politics. All they want is to get in you and reproduce. Mask up, stay safe. emojis: black heart, blue heart, masked, spoon
i'm going on tour
for my new book Hollywood, Ending. Tickets here. Hope to see you.
My state is on the list!!
Starting to think about work again.
Movie update on the plsn to catch up to or beat my husband's Letterboxd total:
Since my last post about this, I've watched 14 new movies. Only one we watched together, which was Cape Fear (1991). We rewatched a couple movies as a family, too, most notably my kids seeing Schindler’s List for the first time.
Almost all horror movie / thriller additions. The only one what wasn't was the adorable gem that is Nimona, and one Netflix true crime doc. The rest were: Pacific Heights, The Crush, Mother's Day, Army of Darkness, The Awakening (which I had actually seen before), Graduation Day, The Grudge 2, Time Cut, Slanted, Faces of Death (2026), and Terrified.
Waking up with a headache is such extra bullshit
Like, aquiring a headache during the day? Fair, understandable, many things to cause that
Waking up however! During my time of rest and refreshment? and this is how you greet me? Fuck off
Short stack for today after a very show, YouTube filled morning.
Heatwave induced headache (migraine?) and company, both for the last four days, slowed down my reading.
I've made progress on several things, most notably Star Shipped, but the only finished book is Heartstopper 5 and my latest Fullmetal Alchemist. Digitally, I'm abput two-thirds through Chirp and at least that far in Invincible #5. Downloaded A Tree Grows in Brooklyn on audio this morning after waiting on the hold for weeks.
Everytime I roll my chair over to file papers in my classroom, I think of this:
More connections:
1975 - Fountains of Silence ends here and the "present" timeline (thus far) in God of the Woods is set then.
Walden - Obviously the Thoreau bio I Begin with Spring mentions Walden several times, but a character in God of the Woods also reads it and criticizes Thoreau.
Calvin and Hobbes - Facing Feelings: Inside the world of Raina Telgemeier lists C&H as an influence and has Telgemeier's childhood drawings of the characters.
Nick and Clover - both are names in Fountains of Silence and in Chrip, and the characters are a pair in both texts.
Babyish things - This one was with 15 minutes of each other. The Raina Telgemeier book's interview with her mentioned her classmates teasing that she liked Sesame Street, then in Chrip the main character mentions her old friends would think going to the playground was babyish.
Dolly Parton - In both Dan of Green Gables and Star Shipped. I think I'm forgetting a third one too.
New reads
Finished God of the Woods yesterday and Fountains of Silence the day before, which gave me some room to add new titles to the stack.
The problem with reading three 400+ page books at once is that it feels like you aren't getting anywhere. In reality, I'll be finishing Fountains of Silence today. Star Shipped will be taking its place because it is a library book. I have nothing going on with audio, even though I have one still checked out. I picked Fullmetal Alchemist and Invincible back up as well because I'm running out of physical graphic novels. I'm almost through my Heartstopper reread for the new release and I'm done to the last volume of Calvin and Hobbes. A few other short odds and ends read, too. Right now, that's 21 books finished since my grades were done (about 2 weeks).
It's funny how sometimes books I'm reading align without any intention.
Summer camp: Someday Perfect and God of the Woods
Questioning strict religion: Someday Perfect and Everything in Color (and Fountains of Silence from a different angle)
The Adirondack Mountains: Someday Perfect and The Trouble with Heroes
Dog: Heartstopper and The Trouble with Heroes
Miscarriage / Child death: Everything in Color, Fountains of Silence, God of the Woods, Just One Gift
Beauty of Nature: I Begin with Spring, The Trouble with Heroes, Calvin and Hobbes
Person vs Nature conflict: Trouble with Heroes and God of the Woods
