At my most recent house party…

My friend was talking to me about books. Her blonde hair created a halo behind her as she turned away from the fire pit where people were roasting marshmallows. Other groups of people mingled as people sipped on room temperature juice mixed with cheap spirits, cans of premix japanese liquor, indie beer. In the distance there is someone setting off fireworks for the winter solstice. For a moment the party dims and you can hear the bass thumping through the floor boards of my shitty rental. I thump up the steps of the old Queenslander. When we first moved I had romanised the molded stained glass and the wooden archways but now my back was giving me grief and I curse the stilts it sits on. I thought about my back pain and turned the music up a couple. “If people are letting off fireworks…” I justified.
