The New Date Rape Name = Future Sex Partner
For my first topic of my tumblr experiment I wanted to talk about something, anything that will make people think, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to talk about how lobbyist make report cards for each senator and when congress comes out with a new budget they do think tanks do “studies” on it and Creditable sounding places such as the “U.S Chamber of Commerce” say it will stifle economic growth by raising taxes on the rich (http://www.uschamber.com/issues/econtax/administrations-fy2011-budget-proposal). But what the USCoC fails to tell you they are a Conservative lobbying group that’s deregulation and supports SOPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Chamber_of_Commerce#On_the_issues). So now I know what I want to talk about, Words.
Which bring me to very first topic, The New Definition of the word Rophynol , Yes the date rape drug. I say this because we no longer use the correct term to mean the what we are trying to convene, for instance my pet peeve (to fuck with people) is calling DeadMau5, Dead+Mau+5…. At what point did someone say “hey let’s just call him Dead Mouse” how is that even pronounced the same way? Why the fuck do you get to change the rules, if someone can pronounce it the way they want why can’t I just call him FUCK FACE? I say this because it leads me to two very important people who shape(d) how people see and hear ideas then perceive them in their minds. Today I will be talking about Edward Bernay the American public relations “guru” and Frank Luntz the king of selling snake oil to the common man.
First Edward Bernay’s was the nephew of Sigmund Fruad the father of psychoanalysis, this background in understanding the mind gave Mr. Bernay’s the fundamental upper hand in propaganda and mental manipulation of the masses. His belief was that if he was able to steer the conversation the way he wanted he would get the public on his side (whichever side that gave him money). His campaigns included Lucky strike cigarettes where he had a rally of women light up a “touches of freedom” in order to protest women not being able to smoke, and the overthrow of the Guatemala government in 1954 by portraying their democratically elected leader a communist. Edward liked using a technique called “third party authorities” in which he says "If you can influence the leaders, either with or without their conscious cooperation, you automatically influence the group which they sway”.
His part of his philosophy was about “If we understand the mechanism and motives of the group mind, is it not possible to control and regiment the masses according to our will without their knowing about it? The recent practice of propaganda has proved that it is possible, at least up to a certain point and within certain limits”,( Edward Bernays Propaganda, 2005 ed., p47) Think about what he said we understand the mind so lets use it against others to control them. A disturbing thought as he does mention that we should not stop peoples fears about “the reduction” of communism (or in circa 21st century “Terrorist’s, Socialists, Equality!) but embrace them and play on peoples fears. (sound familiar “THREAT LEVEL ORANGE!”)
In the book 1984 written by George Orwell there is a specific scene in which smith is being tortured by O’Brien and he asked him repeatedly how many fingers he is holding up, none of Smiths answers are right until O’Brien has smith agree with O’Brian “In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it.”
Now on to Frank Luntz the so called “Maestro of messaging” by public affairs council has been in the media lately for his deceiving tactics in the manipulation and destruction of the dictionary. On his main page of his website (LuntzGlobal.com) he proudly proclaims “we make sure you know exactly what your audience wants, and needs, to hear.” head that before? I have, he has made famous the word Economic Freedom instead of using its out of date word counterpart: Capitalism. He has many other words that he has changed over time (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/republicans-being-taught-talk-occupy-wall-street-133707949.html) and even change the whole philosophical meanings for peoples beliefs. ”Luntz said Republicans should stop using the phrase “smaller Government” and instead advocate “more effective and efficient government” because voters don’t care about the size of government” (http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/02/06/jon-stewart-mocks-republicans-transparently-orwellian-rebranding/). So a Party that wants to eliminate social programs, disband departments in the government only want to make it “effective” (producing result: causing a result, especially the desired or intended result) and “efficient” (able to function without waste: capable of achieving the desired result with the minimum use of resources, time, and effort) doesn’t really sound like there doing that. Sounds like they still want to cut out all those programs leaving us without the EPA, a safety net, deregulation of the banking sector and much more.
So I have decided to now change the meaning of RophynolI to be called “Future Sex Partner “ because it felt that in two cases we can see how propaganda and the twist of a word can favor one over the other. Now I know this has been going on for hundreds of years we now have the resources to educate ourselves in such a way that we will not let other manipulate us into believing what they want you to believe. What they want you to think is cool, what they tell you is good for you, what they tell you is bad for you. For every one person advocating a certain policy or belief there is another doing the exact opposite for the opposing faction. Do your own due diligence and believe what you want to believe, not what people with influence tell you to do unless you would like to go out with me and become my “Future sex partner” victim.
