RU-486 is a synthetic steroid like component which produces effect to antagonize the action of progesterone hormone. Progesterone is a natural female hormone which helps maintain the pregnancy throughout its growth by providing support to the lining of the uterus. The fertilized egg is known to be attached to the uterus lining which is supported by progesterone, once the progesterone support is deprived it causes shedding of uterus lining and uterine content by causing uterine contractions. Thus Mifepristone helps causing termination of early pregnancy.
