Lili looked around. The trusty old paper map of the USA flapped and snapped in her hands, pushed by the wind. Useless thing- she didn’t even know where she was! Too bad it wasn’t GPS... She eventually folded it and stuffed it into her pocket, mumbling to herself how it wasn’t helping her anyway.

With the next gust of wind, however, came the sound of a running engine nearby. Bingo. She bolted in that direction, running as fast as the dropping frigid temperatures would let her. The vehicle that she came across was idly sitting in a driveway- and no one seemed to be in the driver’s seat! Perfect! She slipped in, shifted the car into reverse, and-

[loudly, from the bedroom] Hey Fergus? Can you come here?? nOW? -Lili

Fergus set down the plate he was holding and quickly scrambled his way up to their room.

“Yes?”

“Ok so-” she began, seemingly a little panicked. “The damn pain is coming every twenty minutes, it’s so accurate I can even time it on my phone- but I think that’s bad, I think that means that we should go to the hospital??”

The province took a deep breath. Alright. This was actually happening. Deep breaths, can’t freak out Lili. What was the first thing… right. The bag. He quickly checked to make sure her go-bag was on the dresser, then walked towards the bed and slowly helped Lili out.

“Well there’s no point wasting time, now is there? We’ve got everything ya need, Cape an’ Hali are here ta take care o'Davy… I think that’s it. All we need is ta drive to the hospital.”

He smiled reassuringly as he tightly gripped Lili’s hand.

Lili held onto everything she could in the worst death grip she could muster. Ferg’s arm, the bannister, the doorknob, and the car handle all had Lili sized dents in them by the time she got settled in the vehicle.

“I feel like… like a huge balloon. Filled with bricks.”

Fergus smiled empathetically.

“Those bricks’ll be gone soon enough,” he replied, running beck in the house to get her bag. As quickly as he had gone in, he came back out, locked the door, and flew into the driver’s seat.

The car roared to life.

Lili finally checked into her room. She was now surrounded by nurses and the amazingly nice, patient and ooooh so calm delivery doctor. For the first time since her contractions had started, she felt… okay.

The pain had only increased in intensity and frequency, but she felt an odd calmness about the whole thing. They knew how to handle her, right? This should be a breeze.

OKAY SO MAYBE THIS WASN’T GOING TO BE A BREEZE.

A number of very explicit words exited her mouth as she neared birth. She’d broken- well, more like exploded- the squishy stress ball someone had brought for her to replace Fergus’s hand, and now her husband was back to trying not to cry at the thought of it being crushed like a toothpick.

Lilian shut her eyes and laid back on the pillow with a huff.

It was done. It was all done.

Both babies had been born safely, even the placenta had cooperated. But to be honest? She was absolutely exhausted. This was more work than she'd ever, ever thought she'd do for a couple of fetuses. She watched idly as Fergus strode towards her with one of the twins.

"They're both girls, Lili," he chattered excitedly. "Beautiful baby girls."

A wide smile spread across her lips.

[loudly, from the bedroom] Hey Fergus? Can you come here?? nOW? -Lili

Fergus set down the plate he was holding and quickly scrambled his way up to their room.

“Yes?”

“Those bricks’ll be gone soon enough,” he replied, running beck in the house to get her bag. As quickly as he had gone in, he came back out, locked the door, and flew into the driver’s seat.

A few eternally long moments later, she opened her tightly shut eyes to the sound of a newborn crying. There it was. Number one had successfully arrived into the world.

Lili watched as Fergus's eyes lit up. He looked so happy....

Now it was only a matter of time before number two decided to come out as well.

“I know it might not help,” he whispered, “bu’ ya wanna know what my nightmare was about?”

“The twins were covered in nip- mmmmfffffffhhhaaaaaahahahahahahahahahaaaaaa!!!” He tried his hardest to laugh quietly, but he could barely contain himself. What a stupid nightmare.

"You have a nipple problem," she deadpanned. ".... but I guess I still love you..." A small kiss was planted on his grinning lips.

“They heard you, amor.”

Pulling back a little, Ferg looked down and placed his right hand on her belly. His eyes grew wide as he felt movement from inside it.

“Lili, they’re-”

“Moving, yeah,” she interrupted quietly. “I think they liked it.”

Slowly, she rested her hand on Ferg’s. They stayed there, unmoving, simply enjoying the grandeur of the moment.

A couple minutes had passed, and the twins were beginning to settle down once again. Fergus smiled as Lili let out a giant yawn.

“Think we should get a good night’s sleep? …. again?” he joked.

Lili shot him a bit of a glare.

"Says the f*cker who woke me up," she answered sharply. Her eyes, baggy and half lidded, began to well up with tears once more. She was still frustratingly unable to control her emotions.

The state slid off her husband's lap and slowly laid herself down- closer to his spot than usual. Her greying indigo eyes silently begged him to do the same.

He heaved a sigh of relief and gently touched Lili’s cheek. “ ’M awake…” he said sleepily. “ ’M awake… there’s- nothin’ t'worry about.”

Her heavy breathing turned to sobs as she watched her husband’s eyes flutter open. Tears spilled over her eyelids and down her glowing brown cheeks.
