Welcome
Hello from the Zeta Upsilon chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta!
My name's Ivy, and I'm the 2016 Online Media Director! The idea of a blog within the chapter has been thrown around for a while, and we're finally getting around to it. This blog will contain everything from recruitment survival guides, to input from sisters, to just about anything else you can think of (within reason of course), so in the meantime, why don't we get started with some frequently asked questions...
What is a sorority/fraternity? That my friend, is a loaded question. In general, a sorority/fraternity is a greek organization in which members share ideals and goals. In these organizations, we strive to better ourselves and each other by encouraging one another to achieve a higher standard and meet the expectations we ourselves set. The majority of greek organizations share 4 pillars in which these ideals are derived: scholarship, leadership, service, and brotherhood/sisterhood. In Kappa Alpha Theta, scholarship is held above all, since it is the reason that we're here (in college) in the first place.
Why should I join? It sounds just like any other club... Greek life opens up a multitude of social activities, volunteerisms, and leadership opportunities. Sorority women also tend to have higher GPA's overall then their non-greek conterpart. Besides a resume booster, greek life also provides a network of brothers/sisters internationally.
Wait, but isn't that like paying for your friends? Not. At. All. Greek life is so much more then just going to parties and hanging out. We are sisters . We were brought together because we share the same values, and want the same thing. Chapter dues just happen to be an unavoidable part of that.
How can I balance all of this and get good grades? Good time management. At one point in my college career (my 2nd semester) I was taking 17 credit hours, working 2 jobs, and was a member of 3 different extracirriculars on top of theta, and I managed to walk out of it with a 3.5 and an immunity to caffeine. I promise it's doable, and having sisters to support you really helps.
I'm scared. What if I get hazed? Kappa Alpha Theta, as well as all organizations that are a part of Fraternity-Sorority Life at UT Dallas have a strict NO HAZING POLICY . Under no circumstances will you be physically or mentally harmed.
Alright, I'm sold! How do I join? Here at the University of Texas at Dallas, the College Panhellenic Council has formal recruitment at the beginning of every fall semester. Check the recruitment page for more info!
I hope I could answer some questions. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any other questions, concerns, or comments!
TLAM,
Ivy
